Fruits and vegetables while pregnant

Now that you're pregnant are you more conscious of your daily intake of fruits and vegetables? I hate vegetables (only able to eat raw carrots, corn, cucumbers, and lettuce) and am trying to find a way to get my fill. Any suggestions for a veggie hater?

Re: Fruits and vegetables.

I try to snack on carrots at my desk - but if you don't like the taste, you might wnat to dip them in hummus.

I usually have a banana with my breakfast and then apples and oranges throughout the day at my desk.

What about dried fruit?
Fruit or vegetable juices?
Sauces and/or soups?

I should have mentioned that I have no problem with Fruit. I LOVE fruit. It's the veggies that I hate. Not only that, but some veggies give me the gas (carrots mostly). I need some veggie help.

If you can't find anything you like to dip them in, maybe try drinking a V-8.

Re: Fruits and vegetables.

Fruit is really good for you too - I think I get most of my F&V portions through fruit. Problem is, they tend to be higher in carbs because of the natural sugar content than vegetables.

Can you hide them in something? I know it sounds childish, but it might work! I love to mix my corn in with my mashed potatoes.

If you do the V-8, just try to get the lower sodium one - the regular one is LOADED with sodium!

What about snap peas? They're sweet... Celery? A good satisfying crunch. Chat Icon

Re: Fruits and vegetables.

I normally eat a ton of fruit - so that wasn't an issue.

I'm having a hard time w/ the veggies though - I normally LOVE them, but for some reason, since PG - I have NO interest and I have to force them down

Re: Fruits and vegetables.

Can you make a salad with the stuff you like, and maybe a bit of what you don't like, mix it with a good dressing and maybe some nuts or beans?

same here... I used to love them and now I just don't care to have them. I'll try and get a veggie soup or something so I get some veggies

I'm having a hard time with veggies but I think it may have more to do with the time of year and really just wanting comfort food.

Like come grilling season, I know I'll be eating more veggies.

Also the one thing I'm looking forward to about commuting into the city is having lunch from Hale & Hearty - salad and split pea soup!! YUMMY!!

BTW, Healthy Harvest (I think that's the brand) has fruit juices - grape, punch & one other I think that also include a serving of veggies in them.

Re: Fruits and vegetables.

I wasn't a huge veggie fan before getting pregnant. And now the veggies I did like I have no interest in anymore. I used to love tomatoes and now I can't stand them.
My trick is to make a chopped salad. That way it is all chopped up and I can't pick out the stuff I don't like. The other thing I do is make broccoli or carrots and mix it with rice or I will put a low fat cheese sauce or some sort of dressing.
Fruit on the other hand I can't get enough of!

You may also want to make a good stir fry, either with tofu or chicken.

Re: Fruits and vegetables while pregnant

I actually do like veggies, but when I was pregnant, I found that I REALLY lost my appetite for them. I just ate a lot more fruit to make up for it and made sure I took my vitamins everyday.

Stir fry might actually work. Of course, I've never done it, but I may actually give it a shot.

If you are into cooking, you should get that Seinfeld recipe book, "Deceptively Delicious". They have some great recipes that you make with veggies purees and you don't really taste them. They have a recipe for mac n cheese made with squash. They even have a recipe for brownies that is made with spinach puree.

that's a good idea - you can also make "mashed potatoes" out of butternut squash (like sweet potatoes) or cauliflower.

Also, you might want to throw a bit of horshradish or worchestershire sauce in tomato juice to make it more like drinking a bloody mary, I mean, um, spicier...Chat Icon

I've been doing the Fusion but then I read the fine print. In order to get a full daily serving you'd have to drink over 5 cups (40 oz) of the stuff.

Does the light use sugar substitute?

Re: Fruits and vegetables while pregnant

Up until last week I was craving fresh veggies. I was eating them cut up with ranch dip. It was a good way to get a jumpstart in the afternoon.

Now I have been concentrating on salads with meals & making sure I do a different veggie at night either steamed or in a meal.

Re: Fruits and vegetables while pregnant

Would roasted veggies count? If so, cut up some veggies, peppers (red, green, yellow), zucchini, onions, drizzle a little olive oil on them and roast them in the oven. they are delicious!

Add some veggies to a sandwich like peppers, cucumbers (with skin), a few slices of tomato, bean sprouts....the taste is so subtle, but just a little counts!

Re: Fruits and vegetables while pregnant

My main really strong food aversion has been to veggies! I hate it b/c I used to be a huge veggie eater before and now I still can't eat them (raw or cooked). I can eat spinach with lots of lemon and cucumber rolls from the sushi place but that's it.

Someone recently mentioned drinking V8 so I might buy some and try that.

I do crave fruit though and probably have at least 5 servings a day of fruit.
