Full time working moms - baby food

FTM crashing here. I'm due in April and was thinking about making my own baby food when the time comes and registered for a baby food maker. Then it hit me, I'm going to be working full time, am I crazy? Do any other full time working moms make their own food?

Thanks in advance!!!

Full time working moms - baby food

I did it and managed well. Sundays were my day to make big batches for the week and I would freeze them.

I made all of my own baby food - even with working full time and having a toddler and twins.

It's not very time consuming at all IMO! Plus, they don't eat baby food forever.. just a few months!

Like PP, I typically would batch cook once/week and make enough for that week's breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Once we started table foods, we phased out the baby food. First dinner (since I'm home for that), and slowly breakfast and dinner also. At 10 months they were completely on table food... so it was really only from 6-10 months that I was making baby food.

Full time working moms - baby food

I bought food. My ped gave me great advice. If I want to make my own go for it but spending time with my DS is the most important thing so it can be time consuming and store bought is just fine.

I chose store bought because I didnt want to spend time on e weekends making his food. I am out of the house for 12+ hrs a day. I barely get to see him during the week so weekends I try to do little other than DS time.

Re: Full time working moms - baby food

I made some of my own and bought some. You dont need a baby food maker, just a food processor.
I would make a HUGE amount of 1 thing and freeze it in twin size portions. It saved me a lot of money with 2 mouths to feed. It would last me a month or 2. I made, apples (until I realized that I could just use regular jared apple sauce) pears, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots.

I work full-time and make my daughter's baby food. It is not time consuming at all!

I don't freeze anything in advance. My routine is every couple of days I decide what I am feeding her and I steam it in the morning while I am getting ready for work. By the time I am showered and dressed, the food is ready to go.

It creates additional cleaning but I have a dishwasher so I am not cleaning the steamer myself anyway. Chat Icon

Definitely not time consuming at all! I didn't feel I sacrificed spending any time with dd. It was important to me to make the food myself.

Wow. Thanks everyone. At first I was going to register for the baby bullet which is about $20 and then I saw another food maker that is $120 but that one comes with a steamer and looks pretty compact.

Would the bullet be enough? I guess ill try it out an see what I can handle.

I agree that I wouldn't want anything to take me away from this little one after being away for 12 hrs at work.

Hellll to the no
I barely had time to make my own food, much less hers.
I see nothing wrong with the store bought food- I read the labels- it's just sweet potatoes and water, apples and water etc... it's not like they are adding any chemicals etc

I did! I honestly get overwhelmed easily and everyone told me I was crazy, but it is seriously really easy to make baby food. I just steamed the food, threw it in the magic bullet, and then put it in ice cube trays. Once frozen I put them in Ziploc's and would just put a few cubes in a bowl at night for the next day. It honestly barely took any time, is super cheap, and the food goes far. Totally worth it. If I ever have a second I will def make my own food again.

I did it for.both my boys. Not at all time consuming! You don't need a baby food maker, but it does make it easier. I didn't have one with my first and just baked, boiled, or steamed (with a steamer basket) everything then used my regular magic bullet to puree it. In the beginning, I wouldakr batches and freeze them (usually while he was napping). After a while, I just would make what I needed for the next few days and keep it in the fridge. With my second, my husband got me the baby bullet (the whole system) and it did make it easier. I didn't really make any batches with him. I really enjoyed doing it for both my boys!

I didn't do it - I couldn't get my act in gear but, a few of my close friends who are working moms with 2 kids and husbands with crazy hours did it. They said once you get into the swing of things, it's no big deal.

Same here but I would devote an entire Sunday to making it and freezing it and that would last me over a month.

DS was only on baby food for 3-4 months so all it took was 3 marathon Sundays and I was good. I found it to be so worth it and saved us a bunch of $.

I never bought any fancy baby food making machines. I used my blender and pot steamer insert or oven. I froze them in the silicone cube ice trays and stored them in labeled zip-lock baggies.

I did both but I mostly made for her. DD was never into baby food one bit, she always went for whatever I was eating. And to top it off, she was never a eater.. all she wanted was mommy juice.

Full time working mom and made my own baby food. It is super easy and because the portions are so small a little goes a long way. I used my mini prep and ice cube trays. You don't need anything really fancy. Whatever you get make sure you can use it after your done making baby food. Making baby food only lasts a couple of months.

Once again, I'm with you! Many of my friends did it, but I had no interest. I don't like to cook much in the first place, and our weekends are so busy that I knew I wouldn't have the time or be motivated enough. I admire those who do it, but it isn't for me.

Same here. While it may not be extremely time consuming (as others have noted), I knew that I needed her nap/sleep time on the weekends to clean my house, collect my sanity, spend time with my DH, and sometimes actually do work. I had to prioritize.

Full time working moms - baby food

I just started to make it this weekend. I started with organic sweet potatoes. The recipe said to roast them in the oven for 30 mins and then peel and puree. I stuck them in ice cube trays and froze them. right now one cube is a serving and she is eating twice a day. it took less than an hour to do and I did it while she was napping on the weekend.

Re: Full time working moms - baby food

I did it.

Its really NOT that hard at all. You steam or boil the veggies or fruits so its not like you have to sit over them and watch them. Then blend. That's it. Its really not as time consuming as making a real meal.

ETA: LOL reading the other comments made me remember that doing her 'food' was the only time we had where we as a family could catch up.

FTWM here with a 6month old. I've been making DD food for a few weeks now. IMO it's not time consuming at all. I love to cook and being in my kitchen. It also helps that tiny tot loves being in the kitchen too. So while I'm cooking our dinner or hers she's right there with me.

Baking and putting it in my bullet and then a silicone ice tray is super easy and fast.

Good Luck

Re: Full time working moms - baby food

I did a combo of both but found being able to feed her pouches very convenient but now they make pouches you can fill yourself so if it were now i probably would have made more for her than I did.

It was easy. I noticed that she liked the simple things i made more than when I tried to do recipes out of the cookbook.

I made DS's food, it's easy and definitely possible. I bought an immersion hand blender and would bake/steam his pears/apples/sweet potato ect and then use the blender to puree. I bought ice cube trays to freeze everything, I'd label the trays and that was it.

While the oven was on I would put in a pan of ziti or something for us to have for the week. 2 hours on a Sunday at most is all it takes. I also liked to have Plum baby organic pouches on hand in case he was really hungry or we ran out of homemade food. It worked out great!

I liked knowing exactly what my son was eating- organic, non GMO produce and this was especially important once I started making my own blends of flavors.

I'm a FTWM and although I didnt make DS's baby food, I did feed him organically (Gerber organic, Earth's Best).
But I definitely think making your own baby is doable even as a FTWM. You'll be amazed at what a multi-tasker you'll become Chat Icon

Re: Full time working moms - baby food

i did both
i would just steam a veggie or fruit and put it in the blender and make batches of stuff. But i also heavily relied on Gerber and Earths Best as well because i didn't want to try blending meats myself and frankly their combinations were better than mine!

it really wasn't that time consuming, but it did take up an evening's worth of time that i could have spent with DH instead of doing that.

And i say that buying a baby blender isn't worth it, a regular food processor or blender does the job just as well. Remember that you'll only be doing it for a few months
