Re: Funny/old-time sayings - do you say any?

Yes! My mom totally says slacks, dungarees, creme rinse...and calls a highlighting a 'frosting.'Chat Icon Chat Icon She still says Price Club too.

I often say "Eegads" (I guess it's another way to say OMG)- my Grandma used to always say that (it's also said constantly by a character in the Music Man).

I dunno if these count but I say them a lot "Okey dokey smokey" and "Holy canoli"Chat Icon I stopped saying "no way Jose" and now say Jorge in place of Jose.Chat Icon I usually use these on kids though.

My mom always says:
"You're giving me agida."

ETA: She says "sanitary napkin" instead of pad.

Re: Funny/old-time sayings - do you say any?

My grandma used to call the refrigerator..the ice box

Also both of my grandparents used to ask at the end of each school year "did you get promoted?".

My Grandma used to ask me this even as a teacher at the end of the year. This is one the last conversations we had last year because I saw her on one of my last days of school.

My mom says way to many to count and I find myself saying them to kids in my class and they look at my like huh??Chat Icon

Gma: ice box, she used to watch a program on tv

mom: dungarees, slacks, blouse, you're giving me agida

dad: earl, terlet or batroom, clicker, he sits in the PARLOR

Here are some of my mom's sayings (I don't say them all but I get a kick out of them.):

"Who's she? The cat's mother?" (after I would refer to my mother as she when "she" was in the room.)

"I have to go spend a penny" (pee)

"Be good--if not, be careful!" (as I would head out for the night!Chat Icon )

"A watched pot never cooks."

"Patience is a virtue. Have it if you can. It is found seldom in a woman--and never in a man!"

Re: Funny/old-time sayings - do you say any?

To get a stranger's attention (like a waiter or salesperson) my father would always call them "chief" and would called a vanilla sunday with hot fudge a "black and white".

I always say, "oh, good Lord". And the woman I am very close to at work is quite frum, so I've picked up a lot of Yiddish (now only those words will work sometimes!).

ETA: MIL calls people who are fresh "cheeky" and people who are fake "barfs". Ha!

When I was younger (and sometimes now) if I misbehaved my mom would call me cheeky or fresh.

Oh we have alot around here. They are all old school sayings from my Nana from the Bronx.

Broad=girl

drawers=underwear

"Why don't I just stick a broom up my a$$ and sweep." You say that when you are busy doing something and someone wants you to do something else.

Ogeda (sp?)= heartburn

ice box = freezer

Re: Funny/old-time sayings - do you say any?

What a groovy post!!

While doing a show, I sang a brief version of "Splish Splash" as part of a medley (Splish Splash/I was takin' a bath....). When I finished I said, "So, don't touch that Dial!"

But, no old time sayings compare to classic Yogi-isms such as:

"It ain't over 'til it's over"

"You come to a fork in the road, take it"

"Nobody goes there any more. It's too crowded!"

"90% of the game is half-mental"

And, of course, a saying in Stengelese:

"You could look it up!"

I will call up DH, and frantically ask "did you tape my program?!?!?"

his answer: Relax NANA, you won't miss your Housewives of NJ"

And I am only 33, so there is no other excuse for this, BUT my mother :0

My Mom still asks for "high test" gasoline instead of Premium or whatever. Then, and this is the kicker, she'll add in "unleaded please".

UNLEADED?!!! Chat Icon

I still call Costco Price Club and I still call NUMC Nassau County Medical Center lol. It will always be the Medical Center!

I can't really think of anything else.

Oh no.. I did this the other day! Chat Icon Chat Icon
i started laughing when i realized I had just said 'fill it with unleaded please". There were a few other people in the car and we all got a good laugh over it.

I have no problem admitting i use many old fashioned phrases and get funny looks sometimes Chat Icon

My mom always said "I have more blank than Carter has liver pills."

I find myself saying it all the time.

Like just now I said to a co-worker "I have more wrapping paper than Carter has liver pills."

IMAGE

My mom also calls conditioner "creme rinse" and blush "rouge".

Chat Icon

My dad always used that expression, I always wondered what they were. When I was young I assumed President Carter had a bad liver and had to take pills.Chat Icon

My dad also says you are "Living the life of Riley" if you have it made. Has anyone heard that one ever?

I always wondered who Riley was and why he had such a good life.Chat Icon
