gassy and fussy newborn
my 3 week old has been farting like crazy, yesterday it was going on all day long, me and DH were like what's up with this kid. It didn't seem to bother him one bit.
Today the gassiness eased up but the fussiness got worse. This morning he ate and was crying on and off for like an hour, i'm assuming he has gas and can't get it out.
I just left a message for the dr. -- could the formula not be agreeing with his tummy? He's on Similac Advance.

Re: gassy and fussy newborn
Try some Mylicon.....If that doesn't help, then you may need to switch to another formula...

Re: gassy and fussy newborn
DS was on Similac Advance and we had to swich him to Similac Sensitive after his gassiness and fusssiness got really bad. We tried mylicon drop and gripe water but they did nothing for him.
Chammomile tea soothed him and then ulimately the formula switch did the job.

Re: gassy and fussy newborn
try mylicon but also talk to your doc. DS was having major major farting issues when he was about 2 weeks old, and it escalated to rancid smelling poop and farts, then bloody stools = milk protein allergy. We switched him to Alimentum and he's been fine.

Re: gassy and fussy newborn
Ped dieitian:
A large majority of babies have issues with gas, this is mainly due to the fact that their guts are immature and can not tolerate a full lactose load of BM/formula. Gas hits it peak between 4-12weeks. Think of it as a minor lactose sensativity. Some babies are not phased by the gas, but others can be very uncomfortable.
If you are looking for a fomula change that helps I recommend Gentlease over any other product. The benefit is that it is a reduced lactose product (taking care of the lactose load issue) but keeps a small percentage of lactose in the formula to stimulate the enzyme lactase (if you stop offering lactose the enzyme stops being produced). Lactose is important for calcium absorption and is the largest component of BM. Gentlease also has partially broken down proteins to make it easier to digest. (also continues to supple recommended DHA levels of .2% and up). Gentlease is the only one on the market like this. Store brands do not partially hydrolyze all of their milk proteins, and Sim. Sensative is lactose free and no hydrolyzed protiens (and does not provide recommended dose of DHA).
So thats my 2 cents FWIW....the company also has a helping hands program were they will send you some samples for free as a trial. I have some forms here, or you can probably have your pediatrician take care of it.
HTH!
PS-Gentlease is my favorite formula

I just spoke to the dr. he said it could just be gas but if he continues to be fussy to bring him in on Friday and he will have his stool sample tested to see if he is developing a milk allergy. If that's the case, we will switch formula. He said not to give him anything other than formula since he doesn't seem fussy after every feeding.

Re: gassy and fussy newborn
My younger DS was this way and even though we never found blood in his stool, we determined it was a milk protein allergy. I was BFing so I removed all dairy from my diet and his gas and fussiness immediately subsided.
It'll get better!
