For our stairs we drilled into the wall. I would not trust a pressure mounted.

That is what we did for the top of our stairs.

We also have a pressure-mounted one - that we occasionally use at the bottom of the stairs

Re: gates for stairs: wall vs pressure mounted

We tried to get a wall mounted one for our basement stairs, but it just wouldn't fit right. So we ended up getting a pressure mounted one, but when we opened the box it had these little things that screw to the wall and then when you extend the poles they slide in so the poles actually can't go back and forth. I mean the gate itself is not screwed into the wall, but it is still great.

Re: gates for stairs: wall vs pressure mounted

The previous owners left all their gates. One of them is a pressure mounted one which i hate and am going to replace. It seems sturdy enough, I just don't like have a bar to cross over. It just seems like a tripping hazard. And, the opening isnt as big as a normal gate. This is the one we have.

I have a pressure mounted walk through, but it's not right at the top of the stairs, it's in the hallway and blocks her from getting to the stairs and bathroom.

Re: gates for stairs: wall vs pressure mounted

we had to go around a wrought iron bannister at the top of the stairs so we have a configure gate (which bends) there, its mounted to the wall. at hte bottom of the stairs we use a pressure mount gate, since i am not as worried about her falling down the stairs from the bottom. Chat Icon Chat Icon but it does keep her from climbing up, and then falling down.

Re: gates for stairs: wall vs pressure mounted

We do not have stairs, but we do have the pressure mounted ones. If we had stairs, I would TOTALLY do a wall mounted one versus the pressure mounted.

Troy (who is 16 mos, 33 inches tall, and a solid 28lbs) likes to shake the (pressure mounted) gates and sometimes wiggles loose one of the side mountings!

what is a pressure mounted walk through?

That might be something I rather get, since the upstairs is her bonus room and bedroom. But there is also a 2nd bedroom and bathroom, that I don't want her in.

I would not put pressure mounted on the top of the stairs - they are easy to knock over - we used them when we had a dog and our lab could easily knock it over. I would only use mounted at the top. Now if you want one on the bottom on the stairs to keep your child from climbing up - then I think a pressure mounted are fine.

What would concern me is that if the child tried to climb one it could give and the gate and child could go down the stairs together.

It's just a pressure mounted gate that has a door on it. I have another pressure mounted with no door and you have to take the gate down to get through each time.

Wall mounted only for top of stairs.

I agree, I would never use pressure mounted in that situation
