Georgia and Missouri Anti-abortion Laws

WTF??? I feel like we (as a society) have taken a million giant steps backward. A woman and her doctor can go to prison for many years for having/performing an abortion, but many rapists get off with a slap on the wrist. The rampant misogyny in our current society it disturbing.

Re: Georgia and Missouri Anti-abortion Laws

So this is what I don't get. We have Roe v Wade. It's still in effect, right?
So why can states choose to ignore the law of the land?
What is the point of being one country if all states can just do whatever the ffuck they want and make their own laws with no regard for Supreme Court rulings?
It should be 50 different counties then.
How are we UNITED?
I don't understand that.

Today Roe is still in effect. A State can make a law contrary to federal law, it will get sued, and the lower courts will say this is a bad law and strike it down. That is what the State wants. They want to bring the appeal by right of being a State to the Supreme Court. Where now they think with two new justices appointed by Trump, the new Supreme Court will overturn Roe and strike down the right to an abortion.

Then there are other federal laws, where a state can makes its own law relating to the federal law. Take car emissions for example, California is always on the vanguard of more and newer innovations. States can make their own laws.

As for if we will be a country, that is an interesting question. Right now, blue states are in general, subsidizing red states. Could there be another civil war? Maybe.

I can't imagine her having to live in a country where she has no choice in regards to her own body.

Georgia and Missouri Anti-abortion Laws

It's such a bad-omen type of a feeling. Especially since they do NOT allow abortions in cases of rape and incest. I'm literally sickened thinking about the emotional well-being of those in these circumstances. You're going to see a lot of illegal abortions and baby abandonment. How is this an improvement?

Exactly. They are trying to bring this to the SCOTUS. It makes me sick. Maybe they should start sentencing men who get the snip. I mean lives and all...

Then I read the other day that they did the death penalty in some state down south recently. I mean lives matter, don’t they? It doesn’t make any sense.

You can sit there and have an opinion on termination, but don’t infringe on my rights to my body.

I am going to start spreading the “rumor” that they are considering sentencing men who get the snip...! Let them all start worrying!!!

I don't think that you can compare getting a vasectomy to having an abortion. A vasectomy is birth control, the same way a woman would have an IUD or take the pill. These are to prevent conception. An abortion is post conception. Which obviously I am sure you both know but the argument just sounds ridiculous.

I am interested to see the turn that this takes. I am pro-choice because I think you have to be for the extenuating circumstances but let's be real here, abortions are primarily used as birth control in this country.

Of course I know that an abortion is post-conception. But certain states are also severely limiting access to birth control (and the morning after pill) for women. Would you consider that close to the same argument? Why aren’t we limiting a man’s access to vasectomy?

Honestly both extremes are wrong. NYs recent law is sickening allowing abortion until 9 months and not requiring any treatment of a live baby resulting from late abortion.....The recent anti abortion laws in the south are far to restrictive and really repressive to women's choice. Until we stop leaning to extremes and come to a middle ground this country will continue to be a mess

Terminations are not primarily used as birth control. It isn’t a decision one makes lightly, instead of saying oh I don’t want a child, so let me get rid of it. There is a whole other side to terminations, such as late term terminations for medical reasons, coerced terminations, etc.

This also will affect Planned Parenthood in some way. PP has birth control. It is a slippery slope they are playing with this law. Plus a bunch of men voted this law in.

So yes, I do think it is comparable to the snip with regards of telling someone what they can do with their own body.

I'm so sick of hearing that abortion is primarily used as birth control. Where is anyone getting these statistics from? Do you really presume to know why women who you never met are having an abortion? Do you know what is going on in their life and in their heads?
Oh that's right. You don't.
So stop with the fake facts.
It's just as bad as the rampant misinformation about the NY abortion law being about women lining up at 9 months pregnant to abort their babies just because they feel like it.
The false information is disturbing.

The only uterus I concern myself with is my own. If you don’t support abortion, don’t get one. You don’t get to tell other women what to do with their bodies.

Exactly. That is the bottom line.

And to Nell, I completely agree. No one knows anyone else’s life.

I also think that the law has something to do with an 8 week limit. A lot of women do not know they are pregnant at 8 weeks, especially if they have irregular periods.

What’s next no termination after 5 weeks?

Something has to be done with these restrictions on women.

Exactly. I don't tell anyone to only have one kid, even though that is what I choose for me.
I don't tell anyone not to breastfeed because I personally don't believe in it.

I also wanted to address your statement that women have abortions as birth control. No woman that has had an abortion makes the decision lightly.

Sometimes birth control fails. Sometimes they have no health insurance for birth control or no access to it, Sometimes women don’t have supportive jobs (meaning zero or woefully inadequate paid leave), sometimes they don’t have family support, reliable daycare is also scarce and too expensive especially in NY.

Tell me, would you like to raise your federal income taxes to provide free daycare to all of these children that will now be born to low income mothers? Because let’s face it, the wealthy will always find a way to access abortion if necessary.

Well said. People need to actually read the law and not cherry pick interpretations by biased sources that fit their narrative.

The law in NY says that an abortion is permitted after 24 week if and only if the fetus is no longer viable or there is a significant danger to the mother’s life. NO ONE is taking this decision lightly and shrugging their shoulders saying, “Oh well, I guess I’m killing a baby today.” Does anyone seriously know people like this? And realistically, how many women are having this callous of a reaction? Because all I have read based on the stories that have come out have been remorse and serious contemplation over a situation like this. And the pain and anguish of losing very wanted children because they never developed lungs/an airway/a brain and they couldn’t bear to watch their child be born and suffocate in front of them.

I can’t imagine being faced with this decision.

Additionally, Alabama doesn’t get to pat itself on the back for being pro-life when it puts criminals to death more than any other state in the country. You can’t have it both ways.

I just waked out of church for the first time in my life because he was talking about abortion. Too politically charged for me, especially now. I didn’t want my son hearing one sided opinions that was obviously to help push this anti-pro-choice agenda that is happening now.

And sometimes a woman who has already had 3abortions says “I can’t wait to get this thing sucked out of me”.

There are all sorts of circumstances , reasons, etc to get an abortion. I think people really need to acknowledge that there are people who use it as birth control. Maybe there aren’t enough studies? Or people admitting to it? I don’t know. But what I do know is that 4 women I know personally (2 are relatives) have used abortion as birth control for years.

I really wanted to stay out of this convo because I sit in the middle left of this. I am pro choice. But Using it as birth control is despicable. And it does happen.

It just bothers me when people go at anyone with a difference of opinion.

There's always going to be an exception when we make generalizations. I have no doubt there are a small number of women who do this. I'm more curious as to why. Why not use a much less invasive form of birth control than submitting yourself to repeated abortions? I don't get it.

I don't think anyone can think this is the majority though. I heard a stat the other day that most women seeking abortions already have children. The obvious reasoning there would be parents who are at their limit, financially, emotionally, health wise. Let them take care of their living children. Are they not more important than a 6 week fetus? We don't all have to agree but the handful of women you refer to shouldn't take away other's choices. Some children are treated like crap in this world every single day, let's get a handle on those poor kids situations.

I totally agree. The people who abuse the right shouldn’t take that right away from everyone else. Just wanted to make the point that it can’t be said it doesn’t happen. If me, 1 person who know 4 people who were honest enough to speak the truth about their abortions, how many are there? They exist. To answer the question as to why they’d rather abortions to just using contraceptive. Out of The 2 who I am related to 1 can’t take hormonal BCP due to medical reasons and she doesn’t like condoms. The other said “through all The years, it only happened a handful Of times”. You can’t make this sh!t up. The others I worked with and never asked.

As an infertile woman, as much as it kills me that people even get abortions (it’s a different world for me) I would never want to that choice taken away from Them.

Re: Georgia and Missouri Anti-abortion Laws

Posted by Lucky09

I had the pleasure of working with a group of loser late teen, early 20s young women who absolutely made the decision lightly. Actually didn't even give it a second thought. Had no idea who the father was in some cases...

Let me clear up when I say using abortion as birth control I am not talking about women getting multiple abortions instead of using condoms. I am talking about people who failed to use contraception even just one time and then chose to have an abortion. In that case they were not raped, nothing is wrong with the baby, their life is not in danger due to the pregnancy. They simply do not want a baby for whatever other reason and in that case, in my opinion, it's "birth control".

Still, people on here read my comments to mean that I am pro-life or anti-abortion. I am not. At all. I actually think legal, easily accessible abortion is a very, very necessary thing for many reasons one of which happens to be not wanting my tax dollars to support all the babies that would result from making abortion illegal. But I do acknowledge that from my own experience, whether the decision was made lightly or with a heavy heart, it was almost always do to failing to use appropriate contraception pre-conception. And frankly, I don't care how or why you made the decision but I think it's counterproductive to not acknowledge that for many women it is simply because they do not want a baby and even then it's not any of my business and I don't really care....
