Getting observed for the first time. Advice, please
I've only ever been observed for student teaching 3 years ago. Since I was recently hired, my first formal observation is next week. I was able to pick which class I wanted, which is a plus. I realized after that next week I am starting novels with my reading groups. I have the whole book for 6th grade planned out, but is it OK to start the first day of a novel as an observation? I was going to have the kids free write about a quote that is an important part of the theme of the book, vocabulary, and start on chapter 1.
I usually see this group twice a day, so that was going to be in the morning (not my observation). During my observation (afternoon) we were going to share our quickwrites and do a "open mind portrait" of the main character. However, I just found out I won't be seeing them that morning. Other than Fridays, I see this group Wednesdays, but not next week due to a trip. The only time I'd see this group before my observation is this Friday, a whole week before the observation. I know that will be too long to read the chapter this week, and do an extension next week.
I could do something totally different and not start the book until after my observation, but with (more) trips, I won't see this group for a full two weeks after my observation next week. If I don't start the book this week or next week, I'm afraid I won't have time to finish it by the end of the year.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Do you feel comfortable starting the book the week before and continuing for your observation? You could do something from chapter 2 as your observation with a quick review of chapter one. Otherwise, I think you could push it off and try to read the whole book by the end of the year. You can always skip parts that are not important. Sometimes I skip whole chapters with my kids! Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for your reply. I started chapter 1 today, mostly because I had all of the materials read & didn't have anything else planned for them (I forgot what time I see them and my other classes were canceled with the testing). We did a pre-reading quickwrite response to the main theme of the book, I went over the vocabulary for the chapter, and we got trough about 4 pages. They LOVED it. I'm figuring on finishing chapter 1 on Friday and writing brief descriptions of the characters introduced so far, as well as a reading response journal.
For my observation, we'll begin by sharing our responses from chapter 1, which will serve as the review, go over new vocab, and read chapter 2, which is short. As the activity I'll have them do "open mind portraits" of the main character. I'm planning on doing this a few times during the book at key points so they can really analyze how the character's actions and thoughts influence the theme and plot.
