Girls with DH working in NYC

How do you plan on going to the hospital if DH is at work? It will take at least 1.5 hour for DH to come home from Updown.

Case scenarios:

1/ you are at home
I live 20 minutes from Winthrop

2/ you are at work
I work 40 minutes from Winthrop (911 will only bring us to the closest hospital!).

Are you sure 911 will only bring you to the nearest hospital? DH is a FDNY EMT and if they are asked to bring a patient somewhere, they have to do it.

Therefore, if I go into labor at work, I have to tell them to take me to SIUH, but then again, I come up as MOS anyway.

My DH works nights and I said to him once "Honey, I am nervous about an emergency and getting to the hospital" and he just looks at me goes "I drive an ambulance, I'll come get you"Chat Icon

Re: Girls with DH working in NYC

We are not in this situation being that we both work in the same realtive neighborhood on LI (he is in Roslyn & I am Manhasset) & that we both live together.... (well you know)

But I wanted to say that when you go into labor DO NOT call 911. Get the number for the local Fire Dept & call them - not only will they take you where you want, but they do not charge the ins co as much (if at all).

I am part of our "medical emergency team" at work in case someone does not feel good. When we call 911 they always told us that they will bring our staff to one of the nearest hospital. It's not a choice! The hospital is 40 minutes away from my work. There are 3 hospital closer. They are not going to drive from Melville to Mineola. I am sure with a private ambulance you can do it but not with 911.

Takes my DH about 1.5 hours to get home as well too. I figure that will be fine enough. I have to have someone get here to care for our 2 year old anyway and no real close family so it will take time for that too. My first labor took 12 hours so I figure the 2nd one won't be so quick that it can't wait the 1.5 hours. DH can take car service frlom NYC and it will be slightly quicker...because more likely he will be more nervous than I will be and want to rush home. Last time my water broke about an hour after we both got home from work - so we had no worries.

I guess I could mention the car service to him. Hopefully I can wait for him!

Re: Girls with DH working in NYC

Since DH and I both work in the city we are hopeful that we will be together if I go into labor during a workday. We would both have to take the train but the game plan is to take the LIRR to the nearest stop get over to LIJ. We can have family meet us at the station or hospital to square things away.

DH wants to pack an emergency work bag beginning my 37th week...two towels, water, etc....I am not - repeat not - having a baby on the LIRR so I laugh at him.

The doctors say that the first pregnancy averages about 14 hours for labor so I am hoping that time is on my side.

I work in the City and my hospital is in the City, so I am actually planning on hopping in the cab by myself and having my husband meet me at the hospital. I'll have an emergency bag packed here at work...the hospital is about 15 minutes away by cab.

If Im at home its going to be the same scenario unless he is home with me.

Re: Girls with DH working in NYC

I started labor the first time before DH left for work - I wasn't really sure, but he stayed home anyway. Otherwise he planned on a car service and will do the same.

As for me - I will wait it out - or have a fmaily member bring me - but it's better to wait it out at home anyway

I am sure someone at work could drive me. I guess if I am at home, DH will have to have car service.

It takes a while to take a cab on LI.

Well with #1 if it happened at work I would have had one of my co-workers or my boss drive me and if it was at home my mom. She lives 5 minutes from me and we also live 20 minutes from Winthrop. We figured DH could take the train since it stops right infront of the hospital anyway.
This time around I will call my mom and maybe my godmother (she also lives 5 minutes from me) but I need someone to stay with DS and DH works in NJ now.

Hey Girls, hate to butt in here, but I was a volunteer EMT and thought I would just let you know about the rules -
What hospital they take you to depends on the situation and how far you are from it.
If you are just starting labor, they will probably take you where you want, but as long as its in some sort of reasonable distance. The will take you from, say, Commack, to Stony Brook, but they wouldn't take you from Commack to Winthrop.
If the baby is crowning, they will take you to the closest hospital - but at that point you will probably deliver before getting to the hospital anyway.
If you are going to go by ambulance call 911. If you call the FD or ambulance corps directly, they will treat it the same as if it had gone through 911 - its not like you get some special service by calling directly.
The 911 services on LI are not charging you or your insurance company anything, this is a free service your tax dollars pay for.
In any emergency situation, please always call 911.
Good luck with your deliveries!! Chat Icon

[I worried about the same thing as DH was heavily interviewing in NYC and got an offer...but he found a better offer in GC...I was relieved.]

I know when we called 911 for employees at work they refuse to go past the closest hospitals.

Re: Girls with DH working in NYC

Well - I'm thinking if something happens while he is at work, I will not be giving birth in the next hour or so. It would take him hours to get here to LI - because he takes the train, so he would have to get to penn, wait for the next train -however long that could take in the middle of the day during nonpeak hrs... so it could be a while.

I hear labor takes a while - I would walk around and do the best I can I guess until he gets home...

This is another reason why I hope I go into labor either on the weekend, at night, early early morning, or I just get a date where I'll be induced....

Re: Girls with DH working in NYC

Sorry to jump in..... I called Nassau County 911 for an ambulance for myself when I was home alone. I had a kidney stone attack and the medication was no longer working so I had to have surgery to remove the stone. The ambulance wanted to take me to NUMC which was right down the block, I was adamant that I wanted to go to Winthrop and they finally agreed. The EMT was a little snippy telling me that I was taking them away from 'emergencies' as I was laying on the stretcher in agony and he was inserting a needle in my arm to start an IV drip. I just rolled my eyes and said my doc is meeting me at Winthrop to do surgery and that is where I want to go.

I was later billed for the mileage. Chat Icon My insurance covered everything else.

If this eases anyone's mind, the average for first labors are 12-15 hours from start to finish.

I worked in Manhattan while pregnant. My backup plan was to get the train. If it got worse, I was getting off at Mineola & walking to Winthrop (better than being in a car in traffic)

Re: Girls with DH working in NYC

I have the opposite problem - my due date is the last day of classes at Hofstra, and I'm there MWF. My hospital is NYU medical center. DH works in the city and can be at NYU in 15 minutes or so - but if I go into labor at work I have a 45-60 minute drive (depending on time I leave and traffic) to my apt, drop the car in the garage, take a car service to NYU and meet DH there. I'm not that worried though cause I'm counting on having a number of hours to spare.

Re: Girls with DH working in NYC

I live less than 2 miles from LIJ where I plan on delivering some day. DH's commute is less than an hour from downtown Bklyn to where we live. As far as where I work, in Crown Heights - also less than an hour.

When my mom had me, she went into labor in Roslyn Heights. My father worked in Williamsburg, Bklyn. He came home to Roslyn Heights from Bklyn and took her to Manhattan to deliver at Beth Israel down town. That woman had her some strong muscles down there. G-d bless her!

We both work in NYC but I will probably work from home the last week and a half or so. My mom will be retired by the, so I guess she can come and get me and take me to Winthrop and DH can take the LIRR there...
