Re: Going Back to School for a Complete Career Change: How do you do it?

can you say what you would like to go back to school for?
i went back for a nursing degree from a business degree. i was told in my first semester of nursing to quit work, if i worked.
for my prerequisites i worked per diem at my old job and part time at other jobs. i saved up enough money for a long time to go back to school.
I'm going to school for graphic design. It's pretty much a complete departure from what I do now (event planning) but it's always been what I've wanted to do but I just never had the nerve to go back to school.
The thing that worries me about doing what I do now and going to school is that if there's an event happening I can't miss it regardless of whether or not I have class. So I worry that my schedule will affect my grades which was why I wanted to go to Suffolk first so that I could see how it goes and not drop a fortune or have to schlep into the city just yet.

Is finding a job to just pay the bills an option? Loans?

It's not easy finding a job that will pay my bills. I need to make a decent salary to live and pay for some school, though I'm certain I'll have school loans.

I am an Event Manager too, so I completely understand your concern about going back to school while working. I know the demands and stresses of the job.
Is it a possiblity to talk to your boss and let them know your plans? Even use it to their advantage (you can use your events to practice your skills)? For my last job going back to school, even going for my CMP, was impossible. Between the work hours and travel schedule and the unsupportive office environment it couldn't happen.
I just changed companies and here it is different. They are supportive and work with you and it helps that traveling is now minimal.

I wish.
Unfortunately, I don't get the impression that they'd be very flexible here. Not to mention I just started this job in December so I'm still kind of new.
Ironically, it was the management style of this job that really pushed me to make the decision of going back to school to do what I love versus what I like to do.
I guess I'll start looking for a new job...

I guess I'll start looking for a new job... . You may need to choose what's the most important to you though. I know of several people who had to drop out when the time came because they could not get around the fieldwork requirement which everyone had to complete.
I know of several students right now who would love to be working and making their old salaries but string along a few entry level jobs and then use loans to pay their rent, knowing it won't be forever.
If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

Believe me, it's not that I think it will be or should be easy, however I need to be able to pay rent and my bills and I'm not in ANY position to just quit my job and start looking for part time jobs to make what I'm making now to pay my bills.
God bless the folks you know who were able to do it; maybe they had family who helped them financially or they had more in their savings than I do but whatever it was, they did it.
I want this and I'm willing to make it work but the reality is that there are definitely some stumbling blocks that I need to sort out before I do this because living in my Jeep doesn't really appeal to me!

Re: Going Back to School for a Complete Career Change: How do you do it?
I know you said you really want the 4 year degree, but you can probably start working as a graphic designer without one. The 2 designers I work are pretty much self taught, although one has a general art degree.
You said you have some experience. You need a portfolio & references more than anything.
Maybe take some classes (not a full 2 year program) that you can manage ( online if necessary) & then start doing freelance work. You may have to do some stuff as favors for friends/associates free first to build a portfolio.
You may be able to find a more flexible job that you can supplement with freelance work while you go to school later on.
