Good Sam--mandatory c-section class???
I called about the tours and was informed that they have a MANDATORY C-SECTION CLASS and if DH (or coach) doesn't attend they won't let them in the OR should you need a section!
First of all, when is the doctor supposed to let you in on this little tid-bit (I'm already 21 weeks) and HOW DARE THEY mandate such a thing. I have such issues with health care and loss of rights over our own care and this is just out of control. Besides, what do you really need a class for, not like DH is gonna do the cutting for God's sake. And so help anyone that wouldn't let my DH in if I needed a section!
Maybe they should focus more on lowering their c-section rates and not worry so much about mandating people to take classes. What next, mandatory lamaze or you can't deliver vaginally?
So be ware, if you are planning to deliver there, this is what I was told. May want to ask your OB's if they haven't said anything to you yet.

I went to the doctor tonight and was just informed about this mandatory class and I'm 30 weeks! I was wondering how much it is...glad to hear it's free. I have to call to schedule a tour. Can you go on the weekends?

Re: Good Sam--mandatory c-section class???
I agree with you that it's annoying and yet one more inconvenience with this whole pregnancy deal.
BUT the reality of labor is that so many things can go wrong at any time that chances of converting to a C Section are relatively high. I think the point of all of this is to educate you on what is going to be happening to you so that you don't lose your mind in a panic should things go awry and you need an emergency c. I think that if you have an idea of what the procedure will entail it will help you panic less (if that's possible).
I also think it's an unofficial way of them obtaining informed consent from you - it will explain the risks and benefits of the procedure so you will be well informed prior to going into labor. As a med mal attorney, I can tell you that informed consent is a HUGE thing and it's not like you are going to be listening to the risks and benefits in the event things don't go as planned. From a liability standpoint, it's a smart maneuver.
Additionally, I personally know 2 fathers who decided to take a looksey during the c-section and passed out on the floor after seeing their wives' organs laying on her tummy. Instead of the attention being focused on mom and baby, they had to take care of dad as well. That's just ridiculous IMO. So again, I think it's an education thing for them so they know what to expect too.

Be careful -- if you are delivering at Good Sam -- it is a mandatory class. This is a big rule of theirs...while the mother doesn't "have" to take it -- if you do not take the class and you have to have a c-section your DH will NOT BE PERMITTED in the room with you.

Re: Good Sam--mandatory c-section class???
Its not really mandatory they just prefer you take it. I had a csection and we didn't take the class and it wasn't an issue. It actually never even got brought up. They are not going to ask if you took the class

Re: Good Sam--mandatory c-section class???
I just went in on Friday, and they asked us if we took the class. We said yes, and that was the end of it. not sure if she looked it up in the computer or what.
A PP said she spoke to Dr. P about it and he said she didn't have to take it. I asked, and he basically said, it's their rules. Mind you, my DH and I already had a c/sec w/ my daughter. So, it wasn't like he'd never been in an operating room before.
I will say... to your note of "G O D help anyone who tells you your DH can't be in the room"... I think they learned their lesson w/ us. Long story short, they had started and didn't go and get my DH. I threw such a fit and screamed my A S S off, that I think they're all still scared! Then, they couldn't find him?? That's b/c we were scheduled which is the OR on the2nd floor. No one on the 2nd floor let him use their bathroom. They said it would be another 1/2 hour to prep me, so he had to go to the first floor to use the bathroom. Since he wasn't sitting right where they left him, they were going to start w/out him. MISTAKE!!!! After everything we went through, there was no way my DH wasn't going to be by my side!!!!!!!!

Wow, that's pretty lame. Sorry to hear!
Maybe talk to your OB, see if there is a way of waiving this for you.

Hmmm, I haven't heard anything about this. I'm 31 weeks today. My next appt is Monday, I'll ask about it then. We're taking the lamaze classes with a tour of Good Sam this month, is it included as a part of that?

Well, we already signed up for it, now that I know. Even though I don't agree with it, there is no way'd I'd risk DH not being able to be there when the baby is born. I'm really just miffed about the whole "mandatory" thing....I can think of a lot more important things to make mandatory like infant CPR or shaken baby syndrome prevention!

For us, it isn't "part" of the tour but offered the morning of the tour, like 2 hours prior. She did mention that the evening one is tour then class. Def ask OB, now that I know this I'd hate for anyone's DH/coach to get shut out!

To the first part: That is something I take issue with, that their c-section rate is so high. NO WAY half the women walking through their doors to give birth NEED a section. Like I said, why not offer a class on minimizing your chances of a c-section and offering that kind of education.
As for the informed consent, either way they'll need your signature before they can touch you, so I really don't see how this class would help them (legally) one way or the other. Since this is your field, do you mind explaining that better? I would really appreciate that!

No it is separate. With PG #1 - I did the 5 week lamaze/ hospital tour & we had to do the C-Section class separately.

Re: Good Sam--mandatory c-section class???
Mandatory or not, it's probably a good idea. I know if my DH doesn't know what to expect, he may pass out if I need a c-section.
I understand that you are upset that they are mandating you take it, but I don't see the problem. If it only one hour, chances are it is informative and you (or your DH) may actually take something away from it.
With that being said, I'm sure they would let your DH be in the room, they aren't going to ask for your c-section seminar diploma.

Thanks!!!
I totally hear your POV and think its ridiculous. we did it. it was about an hour and we saw a few videos, one of which had NOTHING to do with a section. it was about shaken baby syndrome.
All I will add is that, always remember, this is YOUR body, YOUR birth (regardless of how it ends up). Do not let any Dr., nurse, outsider etc...tell you what you need/want. It's one thing for them to give you the info. and let you make the decision. It's another for them to give you what they think you need.
Can't believe you're almost in the 3rd trimester!!! So happy for you!

Re: Good Sam--mandatory c-section class???
We did the class JUST IN CASE because I did not want to risk having to go into the OR alone - but when the day of my csection came not one person even remotely asked if we went to the course. I even had the certificate in my bag lol - they totally didn't care.

See, that I get...something worth while to be educated on! As for not being "told" what to do, I usually have a good handle on that one! You can ask Dr. B about that!! I am quite vocal and can advocate like the best of them. Just need to make sure DH can back me up if/when the time comes. Maybe you can be my stand by doula.

Re: Good Sam--mandatory c-section class???
Im not delivering at Good Sam, but I totally agree with you...it's not like DH is going to be performing or assisting in any way with the c-section, so it is absurd for them to mandate a class like this! Especially since in todays day and age odds are you know someone who has had a c-section since they are pretty common, and prob already have an idea of what to expect. I feel that this is just the Drs & hospital staff being lazy about prepping you at that moment if a cs is needed!

Well, I'm sure I learned much more in my maternal-fetal nursing class, having witnessed both vaginal and c-section births...and DH well, he wouldn't even think to look beyond the curtain. And while you don't see a problem, I think I made my POV about it in previous posts...put the educational focus on preventing c-sections instead. Perhaps it is all the professional and personal time I have spent in medical settings that makes me angry about things like this and has taught me to be my own best advocate and decision maker about what I do/don't need when it comes to my body and well being (and now that of my child).
