...how about shooting out the tires of the car if they are driving away- not the people in the car

You never shoot at the tires. That works great in the movies, but you're not trained to do that in law enforcement.

Plain and simple...if you're going to pull the trigger, you shoot to kill...not wound.

agreed. You do shoot to kill. I still think the cops acted irresponsibly.

according to what I read- the men were unarmed- so why shoot to kill?

why is that ok?

The car also slammed into the cop car, backed up, and slammed into it again.

dont think its ok to shoot someone tho, for this.

then again, we dont have all the straight facts.

im NOT likin the fact that it was 50 shots tho

i knew him from HS...never thought of him as a "bad" kid.

Re: Groom Killed on Wedding Day

it all depends if the cops I indentified themselves- which according to the victims they didn't and are were in fear for their lives- so they used the only weapon they had- their car

I am sure we will never know the whole story- but in my mind it will never be ok to shoot 50 shoots at someone who can't shoot back at you

Re: Groom Killed on Wedding Day

from this article on the NYT...

NT times Article

"To the layman, and to the loved ones of those who were shot, 50 shots seems a startlingly high number, especially since the men were found to be unarmed. And police experts concede that the number was high. Yet they also note that in those chaotic and frightening fractions of a second between quiet and gunfire, nothing is clear-cut, and blood is pumping furiously. Even 50 shots can be squeezed off in a matter of seconds."

Re: Groom Killed on Wedding Day

I dont want to judge, but my intial reaction is 50 shots is excessive against someone unarmed.

What could a person do that was that scary to the officers that they feared their lives when they were unarmed?

I dont see what facts could come out to justify it?

im curious to see.

eta- I have never heard of cops believing in you shoot to kill...EVER......Every cop in my family says you shoot to wound...EVEN against the most horrific killers, you DONT shoot to kill.

And everyone in that car has/had a record - some drug charges, weapons charges, robbery

Again, no one deserved to die...but you can't say the guys were perfect angels either.

so- did the police know that at the time? so it's ok to shoot an unarmed person who is convicted of a crime in the past?

that's BS- sorry

How do you know they were unarmed?
They didn't find a firearm in the vehicle, but there's also some question to as whether a 4th person fled the scene.

The officers obvisouly had some reason to believe that their lives were in danger. They didn't open fire b/c the guys just "pi$$ed" them off.

The released statement was they were unarmed....

So I guess the question of the hour will be.....why did the officers feel their lives were in danger against unarmed people...Thats what MANY people are waiting to hear....because obviously its a confusing fact

Re: Groom Killed on Wedding Day

Fromt what I was told, it was believed that they were armed.

Police reports state that 4 MEN left the club together- they believe 1 fled on foot as soon as the car struck the police officer.

Whether its the cops way of covering themselves, OR the truth - who knows. The only way we'll know is if it was caught on any security cameras in the area.

Re: Groom Killed on Wedding Day

In my fathers 25 years on the job, he never shot his gun at anyone.

He had it drawn plenty of times, but never fired a shot. I honestly feel there is more to this story than meets the eye. I feel the most sorry for the bride. Losing her husband, and having to read he was on his way for a "bite to eat" with one of the strippers.

I don't know where your family members trained or with what department, but I was always told otherwise. If that firearm is coming out...there's a reason...your life is in danger. My whole family is in LE (and I was heading in that direction as well) and they laugh at the whole "shoot the tires" or "shoot him in the leg" scenes in movies. You're not trained to do that...you're trained to aim for the chest and head.

Quite possible, yes. They also had an altercation outside of the club, and a gun was mentioned.

I will say one thing though, Sharpton LOVES when this sh*t happens.

Ask them about their training. Were they told to aim at the leg or vehicle tires??? No...head and chest. If you're going to pull the trigger...it's not to "wound" them.

And I was told 100% otherwise. My Dad was 24 years in the NYPD as A cop and detective and always said you never shoot to kill.

I couldnt count how many times he unfortunatly fired his gun....he was wounded to force his retirement and he never killed anyone....

I honestly have never heard anyone say they shoot to kill.....that makes me sick to think about.

I dont know where your getting your info from, but its not correct.

They are taught to aim at the legs...ALWAYS the legs first. Thats a known fact actually?

Our best man is NYPD and was at the scene - he was NOT a shooter - he was a uniformed responder.

There is a lot of info that has not been released to the media, and knowing what I know now, I agree that no one deserves to die and 50 shots is excessive, but there was reason for those officers to shoot.

Agreed. Having tons of family members who are police officers (several in my immediate family alone) I know the REALITY of what goes on in this world and it is nowhere near what the media releases and portrays. Not to say that this is the case in this situation but from what I have heard from friends who are on the force about this particular case (and based on the countless examples from family in the past)- we are not hearing the whole story- not NEARLY the whole story but that's the media for you, unfortunately Chat Icon Things are more "dramatic" and "interesting" when they paint it in a certain way and leave tons of things out. "Groom killed on wedding day" really grabs so much attention and unfortunately they are out for the shock, awe and gore moreso than the heart-felt and caring reasons for writing a story.

I'm not going to get into this further than that- I know what I know and will leave it with this: it's a shame on many levels. Chat Icon

I don't know all the details. But I do have to say that I immediately got shivers, and thought of the Giuliani days. Chat Icon

It was so late, they weren't in the best part of NYC, if the cops were undercover in an unmarked car and it was twilight out, wouldn't you too try to leave? Maybe they thought they were being robbed...or worse?

What happened to "freeze", "don't move", "police"? It seems that those words may have been missed.

I think it's pretty gross that accusations about their character are already being posted as well. Let's remember that someone died and the other 2 are in the hospital.

Who cares that they had criminal records...did the cops know this ahead of time?

Let's not blame the victim (s).

There's always 3 sides to the story...the left side, the right side and the truth. Can't wait for all of them to come out.

No matter how it's spun, 50 shots is excessive.

We also are not the PO's who were there and probably were in FEAR of their lives, esp when one was run over!
