We can all speculate and say what should have happened...but none of us were there, none of carry a gun for our job, or have been put in this situation, so how can we comment on what the cops should have done?

They have the most thankless job in the world...

Thank you for posting this.

so as the public we should sit back and let the cop do what ever then want b/c they have a thankless job?

it is our job as the public to question events that don't add up to us

the police work for us- we have the right to question everything they do!

I dont think that is what she said at all - she is just saying get the facts before you pass judgement. And she is 100% right.

I will say one thing though, Sharpton LOVES when this sh*t happens.

It's easy to turn this into a color issue & that would suck. But we can't be naive about it either. Sharpton wouldn't be "loving it" if the cops didn't give him reason...time and time again.

It's kinda hard to ignore the thought that the outcome may have been different if this was in a "different part of town" with "different" suspects.

I think cops are afraid of "different" a lot of the times and while they may be acting out on a fear (or a stereotype), is it really justifiable? Chat Icon

When else is Al Sharpton involved, unless it is a race issue?

I was referring to LIF.

Yes, Sharpton only sees color. Not always facts.

I wish the NYPD would stop givinig him a reason to get all excited. Chat Icon

Thank you! Unless you were in that situation you have no right to judge. Nobody knows all the facts.
Try going to work every day and having to put on a bullet proof vest and fear that you might not make it home alive.
Then you can Monday morning quarterback.

Thank you BOTH!

For every time my brother walked (NO CAR) he walked ON FOOT (the midnight to 7am shift no less!) in the 75 (worst precinct in the city, average of five homicides a week)- for every person who threw a car battery from the top of a building aimed at his head- for my nephew, his son, who is only four years old... For my mother who went God knows how many nights w/o sleep wondering if he would make it home. For the officer (my brother's sargeant) who got shot two weeks after my brother's last day on the job (he got a job in Nassau which is a safer area so he took it)... For my sister who ran in tears to my brother's schedule to see if he would have been on the night that his sargeant got shot- and he would have- for everyone who knows what it is like to walk a day in their shoes. To be walking at 3am down a street in East New York that most of us would be nervous driving down in the middle of the day- to be walking and hear random gun shots over and over again on the block over- my brother and his partner just looked at each other and walked in the other direction towards a fire house, where they could try and stay for protection, for just a few hours- they did whatever they could to STAY ALIVE each night- THAT is how bad it is. A war in the middle east? Please! We have a war going on in our streets each day! I know, I lived it my whole life.

I'm going to leave it at that b/c I could go on all day. Chat Icon

...how about shooting out the tires of the car if they are driving away- not the people in the car

You never shoot at the tires. That works great in the movies, but you're not trained to do that in law enforcement.

Plain and simple...if you're going to pull the trigger, you shoot to kill...not wound.

agreed. You do shoot to kill. I still think the cops acted irresponsibly.

according to what I read- the men were unarmed- so why shoot to kill?

why is that ok?

because an SUV coming towards them, not stopping, can kill them just as easy.

Im not taking sides, jumping to conclusions, but I know many cops who fear the day they have to pull to get their gun out.

It is very sad what happened. We still do not know all the facts so we have to wait until all the evidence are there. However, I wonder how many of us stop to think what if it was my husband?

IMO there is just not enough information here to make a call on what was right or wrong, necessary or unnecessary. I can't even say for sure that 50 shots was excessive at this point - WHAT set the cops off??? We don't even know. Does it sound excessive? Absolutely. But I'm way too wary of an over-eager media putting a spin on this to say that it definitely was. The facts are still too fuzzy.

I used to live on the 75th...ENY. My DH was born and raised there. Chat Icon for your brother & may he always stay safe.

But please know, not every young hispanic, black, minority male is a criminal. Not all are drugdealers. Not all are "at war".

DH's family still lives there. 3 young men. Students, sons, honest, NYers.

I think it would help to bring the cops patrolling these high risk areas with the people that live there. There's a LOT of mistrust between minorities and cops.

Why isn't this being funded?

Maybe tragedies could be avoided this way.

Both sides can learn from each other.

I am not saying we should not question, just not condemn. It is quite obvious that the public is more than happy to question what the police do.

The fact is, is that they carry a gun for a reason and deal with criminals, so things like this will happen.

Additionally, they are human and they get scared. Maybe they screwed up, maybe the shots were excessive, but how would anyone handle themselves in that situation. Cops are people and not robots.

And most of the cops I know are not mean or dumb enough to shoot off their gun for the hell of it. The last thing they want is to be involved in a situation like this b/c they know even if they are justified, there will be those who will oppose thier actions.

Re: Groom Killed on Wedding Day

Does anyone know what the rule is for cops to shoot? I mean, I thought they had to see a gun drawn?

Someone posted earlier that they are not supposed to shoot if hit by a car, right? Or did I read that wrong?

My husband would not be caught dead in such a place but at the same time I have to sympathize with the bride to be because it is such an unfortunate and hurtful situation. Life is very unpredictable and some of us may think that certain situations will never happen but it is silly to think that.

I agree with Bella.

Also, the girl could have been with one of the other guys. Or are we just accusing the murder victim of attempting to cheat.

Seriously, this is a person.

He's dead.

Posting just to clarify..."shoot to kill" is a poor choice of words on my part (it makes it sound as if the officer is standing over them and "finishing them off", which isn't the case.) Officers are trained to immoblize the threat, but in order to do so, they're trained to aim at the torso and head and unfortunately, more often than not, the wounds end up being fatal.

Way off topic...but that's all. Chat Icon
