Growing up did your parents......
tell you they love you? I am going to be 28 and I still tell them. I have been with DH for almost 10 years and have never heard those words or seen any kind of affection with his family. Is my family "out of the norm" or is this how most families are?

Re: Growing up did your parents......
All the time My family is a VERY affectionate/emotionally expressive family.
DH says it to his family (mom/sister) all the time too.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
My mom yes, my dad no. But he had a VERY disfunctional childhood, so I understand why he's the way he is.
My MIL tells DH and the kids and I, my FIL doesn't.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
My parents were very affectionate and when i was younger they would say it. now that i'm older, they don't.
Which is maybe why i find it strange that his mother says "i love you" at the end of every phone conversation to both me and him. I cringe, because i never really want to say it back to her.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
My mom, yes. DW's parents, not so much. Us now... ALL THE TIME!!!
I am constantly telling DW, DS and DD that I love them, and I make sure I always say it when I tuck them in at night. I'll say it randomly during the day, and not just in passing, like "Good bye", but I'll actually make a point to DS that when I say "I love you", it really means that I love him.

My parents...nope
My ILs told my DH and his brothers every day...and now they tell me and my SIL and our children too. Kisses hello and goodbye and always an I love you or some type of endearing phrase to let us all know But it's not in a lovey-dovey kind of way..it's more of an automatic action for them but that in no way takes away from it...makes it more endearing to me since they don't make a big show...it's just very simply how they feel.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
Not really. If from anyone just my mom. They were never very affectionate. I'm definitely more affectionate than them, but not overly huggy/kissy except with DD

Mine too, but DH's isn't. His mom would tell him once a month, but I don't think his dad ever told him. I think it may be different with his sisters (he is the only boy).

Yes, both families. We also all kiss hello and goodbye. I think that is one of the things that made me fall even more in love with DH. I loved that he grew up in a loving environment like I did.

We always have and still do (probably even more now b/c my brothers live OOS and so does my dad). My DHs family is the same as yours, NEVER heard them say I love you.

They did only in birthday cards..... I tell DD about 5000000000000x a day..... I want her to hear it from me.... not just see it in a card.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
I am sure she did (my mom). But I don't remember We talk a few times a week and sometimes she says it but I feel weird saying it back I tell my girls about 100 times a day because I don't want them to feel weird saying it to me! My Mother was the best single mom I could have had but that ONE thing (saying I love you) just wasn't there My Dad (who I see maybe once every few years and talk to 2 times a year) says it to me and I guess I don't feel weird saying it because he always said it to me.
My moms mom died when she was 9. I feel like this plays a big role in how she interatcted with me growing up.

My family is like yours, I tell my mom & sister every day when we hang up the phone. I have trained DH to say it to me, but I have NEVER heard his family say it.

Absolutely! We are still the mushy types too.
DH's family on the other hand...not so much. I am just glad that DH is so affectionate with DD.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
yes and no.
my mom says it to me. i don't say it as much back, but i do express it in what i do.
my dad doesn't say it much, but when he does, i make sure i respond in like.
mom and i have had deep, deep issues so i don't always feel comfortable saying it. but i do love the woman
i say it ALL THE TIME to ds and he says it back just as often.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
Neither of our families are very affectionate. DH ends every phone conversation with me saying he loves me, which in the beginning I thought was weird because I didn't hear it growing up. I make sure I tell my DD all the time that I love her because I don't want her to grow up in an emotionally devoid family.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
While growing up we hardly ever used the words I LOVE YOU unless it was in a card. My family showed that we cared about one another by making fun of each other. I know strange right. However because of that I make a point of saying it to my children everyday several times a day. My 10yr thinks it's annoying but one day he will appreciate it Even my husband & I say it to each other every night before going to bed.

Re: Growing up did your parents......
Always. We still do. DH side, I have never seen them show affection. I kiss my son every chance I get, even if he is just sitting on my lap, I have never ever ever seen SIL kiss her 2 girls.
DH though is affectionate, and he contributes that to being around my family

Re: Growing up did your parents......
My family is very lovey and tells me they love me all the time. I have never heard DH's parents say it to any of their kids- they're just not like that. And unfortunately, DH isn't much better than they are.
