Hard wood floors and furniture
We have a hard wood floor in our dining room (it was just re-finished when we moved in, in March). I've noticed that the chairs are starting to scratch the floors, even though we have protective felt on the bottom of the legs. I would like to get an area rug, but not sure if that's annoying in a dining room (because of spills and also because it would be difficult to move the chairs.) Anyone have an area rug over wood floors in their dining room, and if so, any issues with it? If not, any thoughts on how to prevent scratches?
Thanks!

I have an area rug in my dining room and one in the living room. I love wood floors but hate having it all wood so I love the look with an area rug.

I have an area rug under my dining room table (there are hardwood floors in there). I have a formal dining room, so it's a traditional looking patterned carpet made up of a lot of dark colors (deep blues, burgundy) and I don't have an issue with stains. But also, I only use my formal dining room for entertaining. For every day meals, we eat in the kitchen.
I also think, while hardwood floors alone are quite beautiful, an area rug can help visually "ground" the space a bit. I like the look of them - they can help add a focal point, or at the very least, some color.

Thanks. I definitely love the look, but not sure if an area rug would make it harder to slide the chairs in and out. We use our dining room regularly, even though we have an eat in kitchen, we just prefer to eat in there. Also, we went really bold with color, so would most likely keep the rug on the simple side.
