hardwood floors and dogs
I was planning on having all hard wood flooring and then yesterday for the first time I heard that you can't have them with dogs? I have a 25lb Boston Terrier but we plan on getting a Boxer when we are done with renovations.
Does anyone have wood flooring with larger dogs?

Re: hardwood floors and dogs
i think the biggest thing is to just make sure your dogs nails are trimmed all the time. There nails could leave marks if running around and ect. But it will also help is I use orange glo to clean my floor and it keeps a thin layer on the floor that def helps protect it

Re: hardwood floors and dogs
We have a Golden Retriever in our 1 bed apartment in the city. We put new hardwood floors in 4 yrs ago and they are destroyed. Also, we do not have a backyard so she does a lot of running and fetching of toys in the apartment.

Re: hardwood floors and dogs
Different types of hardwood have different levels of "hardness" (for lack of a better word). What you can do is buy a sample of the type of flooring you want (Lowes and HD sell samples for aroun $2) and you can take it home and see if your dogs nails would scratch it. If something like a key or a coin would scratch the sample, I would guess that the dogs would destroy it... HTH

Re: hardwood floors and dogs
I have old school real hardwood oak flooring with mahogany stain and 3 coats of poly on them. My dog( a 75lb bulldog) has scratched the heck out of the area right inside of my bow window If I had to do it again I'd do engineered hardwood like Bruce--much more durable.

Re: hardwood floors and dogs
I grew up in a house with hardwood floors & a 25 lb dog. He didn't do much running indoors & his nails were always short. The floors still look perfect. We had throw rugs & I found the hardwood to be nice with a shedding dog. Very Hypoallergenic.
FYI- we did not have hardwood in our kitchen.
Also, My dog loves (doesn't mind) the Peti-paw nail sander. It works great & was very cheap. It keeps the nails smooth & short.

Re: hardwood floors and dogs
We have hardwood floors but I have no idea what type they are or what they were treated with - they were put down in 1965 and covered in ugly green carpet until we bought the house last year. They aren't perfect but as far as we are concerned they were in good enough condition for us to not refinish them yet.
We have a 60lb lab and when she runs around playing on them I do see more scuffs and scratches, but when I clean the floor they are far less noticeable. I try to keep her nails trimmed though, and I don't really worry about it since we will refinish them eventually anyway.

My MIL has the type you can't sand and change the color (parquet?) and she has a 70-80 lb mix breed. We have oak wood floors and our 18 lb dog is fine on them. I prefer them to our carpets because they're easier to clean!

Re: hardwood floors and dogs
my aunt got new hardwood that her tiny dog scratched up - but i think it depends on the wood you get...
we didnt want to spend more $ on hardwood that was going to get destroyed by our dog so we got laminate figuring it was cheaper and if it got ruined we wouldn't be as upset plus we aren't sure how long we are going to be here so we don't want to put too much money into the house especially in this real estate market in florida...
i happen to love distressed wood floors - then if they do get scratched it just adds to the character...i think we ever get a real hardwood it is going to be the reclaimed distressed type...

We have a boxer and we have scratch marks everywhere on our floors! Boxers are super high energy and run a lot!
