My friend ahs GORGOUS doorman apt in tudor city!
They pay $2400 for a 3 bedroom but between 3 people that's nothing
3BR?!?! This is what i pay for a 1BR on the upper east side! I really think I should start apt hunting tomorrow...
Anyway, to answer the question, I've lived in the city for 6 yrs now (2 yrs in midtown east, past 4 on upper east side where I still am). I LOVE it. I love everything about it. When I am traveling and coming home over the 59th St bridge, I get the chills bc I am happy to be home. There is SO much to do here and we're never bored and the convenience of just walking outside your door and having it all right there is priceless.
Now, about the car thing. Last summer DH & I started to go stir crazy. Our friends stopped doing share houses so we were stuck in the city a few wknds and were miserable. Not the most fun place to be on a steamy weekend. So we thought, OK we must be ready to move to the burbs and thought we'd start house shopping this summer. We realized we were SO not ready for that lifestyle change and gave in and bought a car instead. For 5 yrs, we were fine w/o having one, but it finally started to get to us. We pay through the nose for the garage but it's given us a new sense of freedom. Anyway, what my rambling is trying to say is that if the car is a concern, in the short-term you'll find that you really wont miss it. Long-term, you probably will.

Well then I really should start apartment hunting tom. because I pay MORE than that for a 1br in midtown east.
That aside- WE LOVE LOVE LOVE the city at this point in our lives. There is nothing like being able to walk outside your apt and walk anywhere at any time. i love that when i want to go shopping - bloomies, saks etc are all within walking distance. you want a great meal? again tons of places in walking distance. in the spring/summer/fall i love sitting outside on the city streets eating dinner. its also a lifestyle thing that i can't really explain....i could go on and on. and the best - the commute - both dh and i have a two min walk to work! we can meet halfway or at home for lunch or dinner...its the best.
having a car helps and we keep one in the city often. sometimes park in the garage - sometimes the street.
that said, the cons - EXPENSIVE EXPENSIVE EXPENSIVE. If you want to live nice in nyc - it takes $$$$$$$$$$$$$ - probably more than living in a whole house witht a mortgage outside the city.
After i have kids and when they are a few years old we plan on moving to the island but, until then...love it here.
ETA: as for the grocery shopping issue - who needs to worry about it when there is fresh direct

Honestly, No. I feel that Nassau County is too congested for me so the city would be way too much. The city is nice for day trips (Broadway) but I could not live there.
