I don't know how to adjust to not having a car. When I was in HS I said I would never have a car, there's no point, cause you can take the subway everywehre, and I did. But now we both have cars and we both love our cars. And I'd imagine it make grocery shopping a whole different thing, you can't buy a lot at once and forget about costco.

Maybe LIC would be a happy medium.

My cousin lives in hoboken and she loves it. she just bought a condo there. i like hoboken, it has a lot of charm, but one advantage to LIC over hoboken, if we stay there when we ahve kids is that it'll be NYC schools, not jersey schools.

trust me, once you get rid of the car its sooo easy to forget about. i didnt want to get rid of ours either, but we did. and its fine.

you hsould look into w'burg or greenpoint. its a 3.5 minute subway ride on the L. i get to the east village in 5 minutes!!! its crazy. theres alot of culture here. tons of restaurants, bars, art galleries, adorable shops, etc. id think YOU would really enjoy yourself here.

hell I don't live in Manhattan but live in queens where it's so easy to get too.

Manhattan is great but way too expensive.

we rent a two bedroom apartment with backyard and we pay 1100.

we would probably be paying that for a studio in Manhattan.Chat Icon

wow thats crazy!!!!
we pay $1400 +heat and hot water for a studio/flexible 1 bedroom!

I definately think that buying is the way to go if you can get the downpayment together. We pay under $1200 for our mortgage and maintence.

You save a lot of money by not having a car!!! I think that having a car in the city is just a pain in the butt!!!

Shopping is easy. We just take a rolly basket cart with us when we do big shopping.

wow, that's a lot but I guess it's because of your neighborhood and how close you are to the city.

You can definitely find something for a good price and a good area.

We were lucky because we live in the house that my mom has rented for years and then the downstair tenants moved out and we moved in.Chat Icon

There's a Costco in LIC! You could get his and hers wheelie shopping carts for your bulk shopping Chat Icon Chat Icon

Well if we lived in LIC, we'd hopefully keep the cars. or one car. That might be a best of both worlds plan. And if we buy a condo as the area gets betterm our property value will go up, so we'll have a nice downpayemtn for a house in a more suburban area..

but the thing is,a s of now there are aprts of LIC that are just nasty. I worked there. During the day it's ok, lots of business, citicorp, but at night it's desolate and full of hookers...

well the apt we're moving into over the weekend is $1550. it includes heat, hot water. and is a real one bedroom. so thats better than what we pay now.

we're paying for location here.

I guess it would depend on your credit and downpayment..plus aprts of w-burg are at a premium because it's another up and coming cloe to manhattan area.

I alos love brooklyn heights and bay ridge, but to live there we mgiht as well move to manhattan

To those who do live or have lived in manhattan is everything more expensive there? Like how much more do you feel you soend on groceries, clothign, everyday expenses?

I also live in Queens. I like my area because it is so quiet on the weekends. But, I live in an industrial area. There are no trains in my neighborhood, which stinks. So although I am a 10 minute drive from Midtown, it takes me sometimes 1 hour to get to and from work because of the bus. Chat Icon

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?

I grew up in Manhattan. Absolutely loved it. I now live in Downtown Brooklyn and love it here as well.

My biggest intention was to move into an apt in Manhattan right after moving out. It just so happened though, that I fell in love with the area I am living in now.

Manhattan is great (IMO). So many great restaurants, clubs, bars, things to do etc... So much to see. I love the energy and it is a great experience to live here. It is also extremely convenient for those who work in the city as well, a much easier commute.

Some of the cons are it is a difficult place to live long term (for most). As I am sure you know, it is quite pricey right down to going out ,expenses, and rent. Everything about the city tends to be costly. However, you can make it work. As mentioned earlier in the thread, there are many areas in the outside boroughs that are "up and coming" and give you a good flavor of living here. One of the reasons I chose where I am living now is because it is not actually in Manhattan (I wanted it slightly quieter). And it was a little cheaper at the time (however it is comparative now).Chat Icon
There is also so much to do. I do not know where I am going to wind up permanently but Manhattan continues to be one of my top considerations.

Another point to look at is the future. I know that after living in Manhattan all my life I would prefer to have my children raised in a house, because it was an experience I never had. Also, the cost of schooling for kids and residence combined is quite great in the city. This is something you may not need to think about right at this point, though.

Either way, good luck with your decision and if it is a place that excites you, you can make it work.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

But because it is getting better, i mean we could get a good pre-construction deal ona condo, and then bank on it getting better..but what if it doesn't. Once I got off at the wrong train station at night in LIC, it was really really scary.

I don't find it to be that expensive compared to other areas that are close to the city. You can get great deals on clothes!!

There are areas in Manhattan where you can still get decent deals. Parts of HARLEM,Inwood and Wahington Heights are lovely and affordable.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I think I do want to raise my kids in a house, maybe Douglaston or something a more suburban place in queens.

Schooling is not expensive (?), and not much of a concern because I would send my kids to public school. I went to public school and I feel it's the best, especially for certain types of students. I don't plan on sending my kids to private school at all. So really NYC is cheaper in that regard because the school taxes are a lot lower, and you can get the equivalent of a private school education in some circumstances in a public school. I feel so blessed and fortunate to ahve grown up in NYC so I could take advantage of all of the programs that are NOT available in the burbs. I actually started in private school but I was taken out because they couldn't do anything for me there. So I just have a strong attachment that my kids be able to attend NYC schools

I must say that I disagree. I LOVE LIC and wish I could live there now, but DH doesn't want to move. There are different areas. As Jes said, there are very industrial areas, like by Queens Plaza, but you are most likely not going to move near Queens Plaza. But, they are making lovely condos and stuff by CourtHouse Square (only aobut 4 blocks from QP, but much safer) which look beautiful! They also have the RiverView Luxury apartments, which have wonderful views of the city.

Then you have by Steinway Street and Northern Blvd. Those apartments are probably smaller, and the buildings are older but you have EVERYTHING there. Stores, movies, great restaurants and bars. And, it is a 10 minute subway ride to Manhattan.

I used to work and hang out in LIC and I loved it.

ETS: I have never once felt unsafe in LIC and I worked 2 blocks away from Queens Plaza, by 21st Street.

I would love to live in Manhattan- upper west side, but its way too expensive. We pay $1500 rent for a 2-bedroom in Astoria and I'm sure for the same side apt. in Manhattan it would be double that!

My friend pays $1600 for a small studio!

I mean her whole apt is the size of our bedroom in FS

When I was younger I wanted to but the rents were so sky high even then. For me, it was because I worked in NYC and I was sick of my commute. Now, I cant stand the city and can't wait to get out of there each day after work.

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?

Keep in mind that there are always ways to make it work. It can be quite a search though, but it is good to have a very open mind.

For example, the apt I am living in right now is in a gorgeous neighborhood, great block, great sized apt. We have an awesome rent too.

The catch? It does need A LOT of work. It pretty much needs to be totally renovated, floors, kitchen etc... Our landlady was a much older woman who barely maintained. Not to say our place is a dump, it is pretty cute, but there are sooooo many things I would love to do and have for the apt. However, these same things would probably, cost me at least another 500 in another apt in my neighborhood. It works for us at this time. A lot of times you will find there will be huge compromises with living here.
