Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I lived in NYC for 2 years- and never would have left if I didn't get enaged
I actually think it was cheaper to live there- I had no car, no car insurance and no gas tank to fill- I paid in rent about the same what my car cost me with gas- I shared a 1 bedroom apartment - we put up a wall in the living room and made a second bedroom
I walked every where- including work
I loved every minute of it- and I am so glad I did it

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
How did it feel int erms of living somewhere more commerical as many aprts of manahttan are? Where I live now, I cna walk half a block in one direction or a block and a ahlf in another direction and get to all kinds of stores, restaraunts, whatever, but my block itself, is quiet, I can just go sit outside, etc. How did living in manhattan feel in terms fo that? Did you spend more/less time out side, how did you fidn the noise and the crowding

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I think maybe when I was in my late teens - early 20's I would have liked to live in Manhattan. not since then though. I could never handle living with the congestion and noise on a daily basis. not to mention that I couldn't afford to buy anything there anyway, so it's moot point

I was working in a really industrial area. I'm going to look into it. Those condos they are putting up look incredible!
Yes, they are beautiful! They are expensive, though.

I lived on the east side- on 34th between 2nd and 1st- I had a nail place, pizza place, deli, dry cleaner all right out side my building
need a snack at 11pm? run downstairs to the deli- hungry for the dinner- they deliver at 3am want to meet your firends for drinks? don't worry about having 1 too many- jump in a cab and go home
it is different life then living out here- but there is the park- and my building had a roof deck- plus I walked every where so I was always outside
never heard any noise when in my building- I was in the back

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I lived in Manhattan for more than six years, first on the UES and then in Murray Hill. During the time I dated my DH, he lived on the Upper West and then downtown on teh Bowery. Some thoughts...
There is a definite stigma about living in Brooklyn or Queens rather than Manhattan, but in reality I used to live about 15 blocks from my apartment and it STILL took me a half hour to get to work!
A car is more of a hinderance than a help in Manhattan. It's great to get out of the city for a weekend here and there, but there's no point in taking it food shopping! You end up going to so many different places for groceries (I would NEVER buy produce in the supermarket, the mark-up is incredible!) that you'd go crazy trying to find a parking space!!! Plus, if you drove out to Costco or whatever, chances are you wouldn't have room to store everything you bought in your place!
If you added up car payments, insurance, parking and gas and then thought about how much it cost you to drive your car each time you did, even if you used it a lot, it would be crazy! (We worked out that it would cost about $80 every time we did)
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Manhattan, and there are ways to do it economically, you just have to weigh your priorities. If I were moving back tomorrow, I would move to Queens.
BTW, I had a 250 square foot 2nd floor walk-up studio in a reasonable part of town and it cost about $1250 three years ago - I don't know if they still do them, but a friend of mine got a really great deal on a great doorman apartment down in the financial district with a Sept 11 regeneration grant, so you may want to look into that.

Oh that sounds cool, Farah. the regeneration grant. I wouldn't mind living downtown. I went to HS in tribeca and I loved it. I had a friend who lived literally next door to my HS and her apt was great with views of the Hudson. It's not the NICEST area. There's some crime, etc, but I do like it a lot

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I lived in Chelsea (23rd and 8th) for about 8 1/2 years. We had a car and parked it in a lot 2 blocks from the apt. There was no way I was going to try to park it on the street - nightmare!!
Now is the time for you to do it, IMO. We were starting our family (I was newly pg when we closed on our house), and we didn't want to raise our children in Manhattan. I still have 3 sisters who live there, so I can visit at any time. My toddler calls it "the big city".

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation has a link on it's site, but it doesn't seem to be working...hmmm...
Google "Lower Manhattan Development Corporation Residential Grant Program" and see what you come up with. That's the official name.
Good luck!
PS: My friend lived close to the Wall Street subway stop, so it was in a nice area and we were all soooo jealous of her apartment, it was incredible!
ETA: I found this...but not sure if they still do it...my friend's been at her place for a few years now...
The Two-Year Commitment-Based Grant is available to residents, per apartment, that make at least a two-year commitment to living in lower Manhattan. Under the program guidelines, Zone 1 is eligible for 30% of the monthly rent (or mortgage payments, plus maintenance costs and real estate and related taxes for owner occupied units), up to $12,000 over two years. And Zone 2 is eligible for 30% of the monthly rent (or mortgage payments, plus maintenance costs and real estate and related taxes for owner-occupied units), up to $6,000 over two years

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I am single and living on the upper east side....80th and 3rd avenue. I lived on LI before I was divorced and knew this is where i had to be. I live a very SITC life...its funny but true...with my 6 girlfriends!
It is expensive...close to 2k for a studio YEP!!! Fodd is so expensive...food shopping and eating out...same difference. There is also shopping EVERYWHERE...big problem for me.
I don't have a car but it is really easy to get around. I can get just about anywhere by bus or subway.
I live right by central park so spend a lot of time relaxing there and running. ALso the east river is nice up there and right my the MET too.
This summer I have a shore house so its great to get out of the city for weekends...big plus this year.:
I am a suburbs girl...but until I meet someone and settle down...this is where I gotta be.
What about Forest Hills??

but the thing is,a s of now there are aprts of LIC that are just nasty. I worked there. During the day it's ok, lots of business, citicorp, but at night it's desolate and full of hookers...
i agree. i dont like LIC. its so industrial, and abosultey desolate at night. very scary for a women.
But because it is getting better, i mean we could get a good pre-construction deal ona condo, and then bank on it getting better..but what if it doesn't. Once I got off at the wrong train station at night in LIC, it was really really scary.
I must say that I disagree. I LOVE LIC and wish I could live there now, but DH doesn't want to move. There are different areas. As Jes said, there are very industrial areas, like by Queens Plaza, but you are most likely not going to move near Queens Plaza. But, they are making lovely condos and stuff by CourtHouse Square (only aobut 4 blocks from QP, but much safer) which look beautiful! They also have the RiverView Luxury apartments, which have wonderful views of the city.
Then you have by Steinway Street and Northern Blvd. Those apartments are probably smaller, and the buildings are older but you have EVERYTHING there. Stores, movies, great restaurants and bars. And, it is a 10 minute subway ride to Manhattan.
I used to work and hang out in LIC and I loved it.
ETS: I have never once felt unsafe in LIC and I worked 2 blocks away from Queens Plaza, by 21st Street.
I've lived in LIC for the last 3 years. I live on 48th avenue in the citylights building - if I had a really good throwing arm, I could throw a baseball and break a window at the UN - we're right on the east river. LIC is a very large area - but the area that a number of people seem to be referring to (the new luxury buildings going up, etc.) is the area where I live - the subway stop is Vernon Jackson. The subway is actually 5 minutes to grand central station (one stop on the 7 train). The neighborhood is varied - there are some lovely row houses (not as nice as Brooklyn or Harlem Brownstones - but still pretty) and brand new apartments. The neighborhood is very quiet at night, though there are a number of lounges/bars and plenty of restaurants.
On Vernon Boulevard (the main street in the neighborhood) there is:
3 irish pubs Communitea - tea house/sandwich shop way too expensive florist bakery wine store (a wine bar is opening in a month) barber thai restaurant french bistro french crepe restaurant chinese food 3 italian restaurants a few delis a small market - mostly organic stuff police precinct an italian/american society a center for the hard of hearing LIC bar lounge 47 - cool rest/bar spot brazilian coffee house catholic church Tennisport - John McEnro's tennis club the crab house (fish restaurant)
and LIC Beach - a nonswimming beach (they trucked in sand from jersey) with hot dogs, beer, beach volleyball and the best views of the skyline
and I know I'm forgetting a number of places.
Costco is less than a mile away - Astoria park and pool is about a 10 minute drive - the NY Irish center is around the block.
The area by the citicorp building is more industrial - there is a lot of building going on in that area as well - but I'm more familiar with the vernon/jackson area.
I think it's the best neighborhood - lots of parks, families, everyone seems to know each other - it's quiet but there's lots to do.

There's a Costco in LIC! You could get his and hers wheelie shopping carts for your bulk shopping
Well if we lived in LIC, we'd hopefully keep the cars. or one car. That might be a best of both worlds plan. And if we buy a condo as the area gets betterm our property value will go up, so we'll have a nice downpayemtn for a house in a more suburban area..
but the thing is,a s of now there are aprts of LIC that are just nasty. I worked there. During the day it's ok, lots of business, citicorp, but at night it's desolate and full of hookers...
We both have cars in LIC. Our building has parking but they have been raising the prices and it's crazy expensive. Parking on the street is BRUTAL where we are.

seriously - I would never try and oversell a neighborhood - but honestly, I love it. We went to a new building last night to check it out (877-LIC-8777) and they showed us the plans for the Rockrose development - 7 new buildings along the east river (right by the pepsi cola sign). Most of them are rentals - but one will have a HUGE pool and a grocery store and drug store on the ground floor.
and - I belong to the LIC kayak club (it's free) and kayak the east river to DUMBO pretty often. . . which is so much fun (and I've never fallen in to the east river - that's the next question everyone asks)
oh - and there is an elementary school (it occupies the first few floors of our building) - robert wagner school - i think? it's a NYC public school. I voted in the school - but that's about all I know about it.
feel free to FM if you ever want to know more -or if you want a tour!

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
DH has lived in the city his entire life - besides being away at college for 4 years. He didn't like it so much...I've lived with him for 5 years now and we're getting out of here. Yes, it's convenient for commuting, but it's so crowded and expensive.

Yes, before we got married we were looking into coops in NYC, but then decided that since we're in our late 30's (his older) we would have kids sooner than later, and bought a house out here instead.
sorry for the run on sentence!

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I love the city! I grew up in Queens and my family moved to Long Island and it took me so long to adjust. Once I left for college, I never thought I'd be back. We'll I am back now and living in suburbia and I honestly dont like it..even with a child. I much rather live in the city (or a city if we leave NY) and have her grow up around all the culture and get used to walking every where, playing in the public parks, and not have strip malls every 10 feet.

Where in queens did you grow up? I was born in Jackson Heights - moved to LI when I was a baby - grew up in LI, moved to jackson heights after college - lived there @8 years, then moved to LIC for the last 3 years.
I LOVE queens!

via subway - take the 7 train to vernon/jackson and exit via vernon boulevard. Walk around the neighborhood - go to the river (there is a nice park there) and have a lovely day! I recommend communitea for lunch - or cafe henri. . .
via car: take the LIE West to the last exit before the midtown tunnel - Van Dam. When you exit, keep going straight (you will be driving with the expressway supports next to you). Keep going straight until the end - you will be going under the highway and will make a left turn onto Borden Avenue. Borden Ave is the home to Fresh Direct and you'll see the enormous Fresh Direct computer screen/tv on the road. Take borden ave straight - you'll be driving toward the skyline. Make right turn onto Vernon Boulevard. There is a huge movie billboard at the turn. Park your car at Vernon Boulevard and walk around.
Definitely go to the east river - there is a park, restaurant, awesome views of the skyline. . . and you can see the new apartments being built. Our building (citylights) has a listing of all the apts for sale and for rent and will be happy to give you a list.
The area has tons of construction going on - there are something like 12 new buildings going up within a 3 minute walk from our building.
have a lovely time!
