Has anyone had to have their baby's tear ducts punctured?
DS is 7 months and still has a blocked tear duct. The ophthalmologist said that if it doesn't clear up by the time he is 9 months, he will have to have it punctured. He was doubtful it will open up on its own - if it hasn't already, it probably won't. He has to go under general anesthesia for this and that makes me so nervous. I had eye surgery when I was 8 and it was awful. I had such a bad reaction to the anesthesia I was puking for hours and they wouldn't let me go home until I could drink a glass of water without throwing up.
This is only a 5-10 minute procedure but the thought of him going under make me want to cry.

Have you been massaging it?

Yes, we have been doing that pretty much since he was born. He's also had two kinds of eye drops.

Re: Has anyone had to have their baby's tear ducts punctured?
My Neice had it done. Both eyes were constintely tearing and backing up. The one eye was punctured and the other eye they had to make a duct for her. When they went in for the surgery, they realized she was born with no lower duct. They made one for her.
She was great during surgery and since the one eye didn't take, they actually had to do it twice. Sometime massaging it won't help.
He will be great. It's a quick thing.

i am not sure about this for babies and children - but there is something (I think it's Zofran) that they can put in the IV to prevent the throwing up afterwards.
i am like you and react poorly to the meds they give during surgery and since i realized that - i request the anti-naseau meds EVERY time now (though after the c-section - it didn't help and i still puked all night).
