Heads up - I have Major issues with this new lunch system.
It is my understanding that pricing is different this year. I previously wrote a post and provided a link and have also went and bought hot lunch, as a teacher, in my elementary school. I am not happy.
Basically hot lunch costs $2.00 lets say. That usually the entree, lets say pizza and includes a drink, vegetable and fruit side.
Well, if my son tried to purchase JUST the pizza and a milk its $2.50 because if they dont buy ALL the items they charge them a la carte (seperately) And the prices are terrible. So the pizza lets say is $2.00 JUST BY ITSELF. Then the milk might be 50cents and the fruit another 50 cents.
They have to buy the WHOLE meal to get it for the hot lunch price. My 1st grader was not getting a drink the whole first week of school! He couldnt afford it he kept telling me.
I am pissed. After many notes with his lunch money etc they know now to always give my son the WHOLE lunch. How can they expect a 6 year old to understand this? (especially one who didnt have a cafeteria last year.
Just wanted to give you all a heads up.

How does that make any sense? I would be extremely mad.

Re: Heads up - I have Major issues with this new lunch system.
Do they have lunch cards? If I understand ours correctly, they only use it for the standard hot lunch, not like a debit card for anything the kid wants. If they present the card they are charged for hot lunch. I send separate money for the snacks that are not included and I only do that b/c my son often only eats 1-2 bites of each thing. The hot lunch always has a fruit, though.

I could do a lunch card too, but I wanted to do cash first because I heard of this new system this summer. I was afraid with the card theyd be charging my son too much for each meal b/c he didnt buy the whole thing and I believe Id be right. My son in the middle school is experiencing the same thing.

I tried to cut and paste from their menu but its some sort of excel program so heres what it says.
Price: $2.25 paid (thats a FULL lunch with all of the items below) A la carte prices: Entree $2.00, vegetable .75, fruit .75, milk .75 Juice .60
So worse than I thought.

Re: Heads up - I have Major issues with this new lunch system.
My kids go to a private school, but that's exactly how it is in their school, pricing wise as well. Definitely cheaper to buy the meal plan that it is to buy ala carte.
Except the meal plan is $4.50. When my son purchased a meal ala carte last week that was *nearly* identical to the meal plan, it cost him $5.25 instead (he got chicken tenders instead of chicken fritters).
Who does their food service, I wonder if it's the same company... ?

Hot lunch has always been cheaper then a la carte. And the schools should have been charging it that way for years now. The rules just get stricter this year. I would call the lunch manager and tell her you want him given the full hot lunch. The cashier has to be sure he is taking enough components to be a full lunch.
I also set up their prepaid lunch buy allowing them to only buy a full hot lunch, nothing ala carte.

Re: Heads up - I have Major issues with this new lunch system.
Lunch was always the same way. For example $1.00 if you just wanted the pizza and milk, or $1.00 if they wanted pizza, peaches, broccoli and a milk. They were able to decline items offered to them. Now if they dont want their nasty broccoli (which was honestly ghastly the other day) my child cant even afford a milk. If they honestly taught all the kids I wouldnt have a problem with it. To just start the school year with a letter to the parents is not enough. The kids just dont get it. Ill see if I can set up the online as a FULL lunch only. That would help.

I am not following this. Why don't you tell him to order the "full hot lunch" and then he eats what he wants off the plate? MAybe I'm just being dense, but it seems fairly simple to me.

Yes, and I have. The kids dont all understand it. Last year you didnt have to take it all, sometimes they have choices of vegetables and on the same counter they offer snacks and drinks for more money. It is very confusing to a 4, 5 or 6 year old who never bought anything without mom before. My son gets it NOW after talking to him day after day after day. Im giving other parents a heads up, especially those who prepay for the year or so and dont know how much theyre charging their child every day.

And what a waste of food if a kid knows they're not going to eat the broccoli but takes it to keep the cost down. I mean I get what they're trying to do, but really, kids that young should just be given lunch, not a choice of ala carte then

Re: Heads up - I have Major issues with this new lunch system.
Ok, I get it now. That's ridiculous. Why is there even an ala carte option? Especially for that young. That age group should be either Hot Lunch or Bring Lunch. Thanks for explaining it to me!

I get what they are trying to do but they should hand the little kids a fruit or vegetable anyway. They don't understand a la carte.

How abut a note to his teacher. At first I thought that DS's teacher didn't go to lunch with the kids so that would not work but she told me that a note saying what he wants for lunch will get things done.

our school is the same and it is so annoying! I just tell DS to make sure he takes whatever they offer for fruits and veggies and he doesnt have to eat it if he doesnt like it. Our school he has to take 3 things besides an entree for it to be considered a "meal"

Re: Heads up - I have Major issues with this new lunch system.
We put money in our DD's account, and can check to see how they charge for things.
If there is an issue with them over charging because you didn't take everything from the full lunch and the cafeteria rang it up wrong, all that I have to do is call the nutrition office and they fix it for me.
The ala carte items pricing are supposed to be for someone who is taking an extra of something. It sounds like they need to educate their cashiers on this.

Same here, except I have never had a problem with them charging a'la carte for anything that isn't 'extra'. I keep tabs on line though.

No, they changed the federal guidelines on this. To qualify for the lunch price of say $2.00 you have to buy the ENTIRE lunch. That is the crux of the problem. Not untrained cashiers.

This is a huge issue in the school that I teach at too. This is the new push from Michelle Obama. Since it is costing so much for a la carte, the lunch aides are having the children take all items to constitute a full meal and then the children are just throwing them right in the garbage. It is a complete waste and a disgrace in my opinion. Why the government needs to decide what children should and should not eat for lunch is beyond me.

Yes.. you are correct. I spoke to Noah today because he bought. He said he didn't want a drink but the lunch lady told him that if he didn't pick, she would pick for him. So he got a milk.. which he then tossed in the trash.
Yes.. I was frustrated with him and we had a discussion about wasting food. But forcing him to take the food/drink is still not going to make him eat it.

Besides this the kids all say the lunches STINK! They say the bagels are small and don't taste good. my kid orders yogurt for 2.25!!! good lord! I watch them on the website for the pre-paid lunch program... they buy cookies, and junk but they introduce "healthy" lunches, but still have this junk to buy?? i don't get it either... i feel like they are trying to trick the kids.

I agree. I volunteer sometimes at my son's school and they make them take fruit and vegetables. It is sad to see most of the untouched fruit in the garbage. Not because they give kids fruit, they are going to eat it. I have a huge problem with this because I grew up being very conscious about not wasting food.

Im so happy people understand what Im saying!! LOL Its a crap system. Either the kids gets way overcharged for eating regular foods of what they want, or they get charged less, take the extras and then waste them and throw them out. I do not get how anyone thought this would be a good idea!
