This is the same at our school too, except they don't have to take the whole meal, just 3 of the items. So I "script" DD on what she's getting. She usually only buys on pizza day, so I tell her she has to get the pizza, milk, and then we choose either the fruit and/or the veg.

Oh, and BTW...water does not count as part of their meal even though it is available to them since it has no nutritional value...they HAVE to take the milk...they can have it with sugar, aka chocolate/strawberry, and that is "healthy". Chat Icon

Heads up - I have Major issues with this new lunch system.

the disgrace is that kids will throw away fruits and veggies rather then eat them.
that this rule even exists is crazy...
if your child does not eat fruits or veggies, then they should not be allowed junk.
we are talking about green beans. not something toxic on their trays.
and with the way kids are acting-out of control with low attention spans-reduce the sugar and up other unprocessed foods.

Heads up - I have Major issues with this new lunch system.

I am in the school cafeteria 1-2 times a week.
I seriously cannot believe what parents pack in these lunch boxes.
if your kid is opening up more then one packaged item...something is wrong.
the sodium alone is crazy.
and hot lunch...chicken nuggets and chocolate milk just aren't going to cut it.
you are what you eat. fill a kid up with junk and they will perform like junk.

Janice, I completely agree. Im a vegetarian and my kids eat an awful lot of veggies and fruits but even I am disgusted by some of the things the school deems edible. Id rather eat my dads MREs!! The fact is if they dont take the fruit and veggie its so expensive they cant even afford a drink and nobody is educating them on this! Its just not right! To the PP, I agree they can take milk for free but not water. Such crap LOL. BTW I love their bagels covered in melted cheese thursday mornings. Not the best for you but will fill the empty spot in my tummy LOL

I don't agree with the pricing but I think its a good idea. Every child is not offered fruits and vegetables at home. This might force them to try it. My son eats the fruit they serve him at school. At home he is picky. I can't complain about the lunch menu. They do not serve French fries or tater tots. It seems pretty healthy.

They might be willing to try the fruits and vegs if there was an adult sitting with them, in a friendly way encouraging them to try it. But when they sit with just their friends and 2 or 3 adults walking around "monitoring" them and forcing them to hurry up and eat in the short amount of time they're given, it is pretty unlikely that they will try anything new. On days that my DD buys, she barely has enough time to eat what she DOES like, let along be cajoled into trying something new.

But, it does make sense to at least be exposing them to the stuff they may not get at home, just don't give them the choice to say no to it...put it on all of their trays regardless.

Well just wanted to update. The superintendent in connetquot has a great spot on their site where you can email them any question you have and they answer it and he confirmed for me that a hamburger and a milk would be $2.75 while a hamburger milk and fruit would be $2.25. Cheaper. My point was just while *I* understand this, 4 year olds dont.

I agree that it's unlikely the children will try anything new or anything that they 'think' they don't like based on past experiences unless someone is going to sit there and encourage them, which I just don't see happening for the 100-200 kids that are going to be sitting there eating lunch at any given time.

I do understand the idea that it's good to give the kids healthy veg/fruit options in case they don't get those options at home.. but I also feel that insisting that they take these foods only to throw them out encourages waste and also kind of oversteps the parental roles a little bit. Parents have a responsibility to provide healthy food to their kids. If the only time they are seeing greens is the 180 days (or much less) that they eat lunch at school, the nutritional impact is going to be nominal at BEST.

I feel that the best option is to continue to educate the kids about healthy choices. Maybe put laminated cards in front of the choices.. a big heart to show something is heart healthy, muscles to show something helps encourage muscle growth, etc.. Continued exposure to the value of making good choices when eating and the negative effects of poor choices is really the only way kids might start to take notice.

My parents and older siblings smoked. When I got to school I was taught that smoking was incredibly bad for you and it impacted me enough that I never took up the habit. Moreover.. continued education on the negative side effects of smoking have resulted in an overall decline in the number of smokers since the 70's. I think the same can happen for food choices. If our kids continue to hear that sugar and processed foods result in undesired consequences including obesity and various diseases and that conversely vegetables and fruits can result in them growing better, having more muscles and being leaner and more fit.. they may show a more vested interest in healhy foods. But forcing foods tht they don't want onto their plate isn't going to get us there. It's going to just get a lot of waste.

I am not following this. Why don't you tell him to order the "full hot lunch" and then he eats what he wants off the plate? MAybe I'm just being dense, but it seems fairly simple to me.

Yes, and I have. The kids dont all understand it. Last year you didnt have to take it all, sometimes they have choices of vegetables and on the same counter they offer snacks and drinks for more money. It is very confusing to a 4, 5 or 6 year old who never bought anything without mom before. My son gets it NOW after talking to him day after day after day. Im giving other parents a heads up, especially those who prepay for the year or so and dont know how much theyre charging their child every day. Chat Icon

I would write a note to the teacher to remind them to take the whole lunch, maybe tell the aides.

Frankly, it is none of your or anyone's business what my or anyone else's child should be "allowed". I for one, do not always give a fruit or veggie with lunch, always dinner but not lunch. If I deem it acceptable for him to have cookies instead of carrots, that is for me to "allow"
