We probably won't know whether he killed himself or accidentally ODed for a few days.
JMO here, but i don't think he killed himself. I mean he had an appointment for a massage that day. Well in my experience, people who are planning on killing themselves, don't make appointments for the future.
I think it was accidental.

A family lost its son. A child lost her father. I hope to G-d there was no foul play as that would be absolutely tragic.
But if he were a drug user/abuser and did so very carelessly, then I cannot help but think it is a selfish act to use drugs when you have a child who depends on you for love and sustenance. I felt this way when Kurt Cobain took his own life.
I pray that there will be definitive answers and that this little girl's mother is able to shield her from what surely awaits her - a world who will want to know every little thing about her and he father.
May he rest in peace. He was quite a talent.

One of the most horrible things about all this is I bet his family and friends found out about him dying from the media. The news reported it only 1 hour or so after the cops responded to the scene.

This reminds me a lot of when we were younger and River Phoenix died. Such a young, talented, respected actor. It's such a shame. And to leave behind a young child is just awful. I also feel bad for Michelle Williams. I'm sure she's taking this very hard and has to wonder if there's anything she could have done to help or prevent this.
I can't believe those pictures are really him and not pictures from a film.

It's possible but usually they do notify next of kin before they say anything to the press. But I'm sure there are certain family members and friends that found out through the media.

yes!! i thought the same thing -- the very first thing i said to DH - and friends - when discussing this was "another river phoenix" ... i was quite young when he passed away but was very interested in him during my teen years (after he had died) and read bio's on him and such - that was SO sad - especially considering his younger brother (who we all now know from walk the line - joaquin phoenix) witnessed it and made the desperate call to 911.

nypost.com is reporting that is was an accidental overdose of anti-anxiety pills. They are also saying that those photos are from his latest film that he was currently filming.

This is so so sad. I really doubt it was foul play or suicide. Honestly, I think it was just a really bad accident. I can't see HIM doing that to his little girl on purpose.

First person I thought of was River Pheonix. Just such a shock. What a talented actor, who could have done so much with his life. My heart really goes out to his family.

She probably does. They have only been separated since the fall, I think & they have a child together.
I think part of the reason it is so shocking is that he was still working & seen out & about he wasn't one of those people that everyone knew was struggling or someone who had been reclusive.

This is so beyond sad. He was one of my favorite young actors. I was looking forward to seeing him in the new Batman movie. My jaw dropped when I read this news. I simply can't believe it.
