Help - need some advice dealing with toddler stubborn streak - updated
In the past few weeks DD seems to have developed a real stubborn streak. For example, 20 minutes ago I wanted to go to the store. It used to be so "easy." DD would pick a book and follow me out the door. No problem. Now she just stands there shaking her head saying "no." I really don't know how to handle this. I'm not going to drag her to the car. I know she'll start freaking out if I force her to go. I tried bribing her with fishies (Goldfish crackers.) Nope, she still won't go. I have given up and am sitting here on the computer. I'll try again in a few minutes, but have a feeling she still won't want to go. How do I get her to realize that I'm the boss, not her? I am so frustrated with her lately. I know it's the start of the terrible twos and this will go on for quite awhile. Any advice? TIA
Update: Thanks for the advice. It's a little tricky here in this apartment (high rise building with an elevator.) But I did walk out the door. DD closed it behind me! I waited in the hallway a few minutes; she opened it to see where I was, saw me, closed it again. I ended up pretty much forcing her into the elevator and had to fight to get her strapped into the carseat. Then when we got to the store she didn't want to get out of the car and into the shopping cart. Fun! I forced her into the cart. She freaked until we were in the store for a few minutes, then calmed down and was ok for the rest of the time. She has been doing things like this for the past 2 weeks or so. I am so frustrated and don't know how to handle her anymore. I miss my angel baby.

I always say bye I am going.
sometimes he comes, sometimes he doesn't.
If he doesn't, I walk out the door.
He ususally comes running and banging on the door.

Don't give in to her. If you don't go because she doesn't want to then she is the boss!

I'm so sorry you are going through this. This works for our house too. Jeremy will generally come running after me. I "bribe" him with a lollipop when he really refuses to do something. He knows he can only have one while sitting so that works for us. Is there another treat that she can associate with sitting in the car or stroller? Maybe a certain stuffed animal that she can only get in those places?

I do the same thing too.. and Susan, I also live in a building with an elevator (though we are all the way down the hall from the elevator) so I know what you are getting at in terms of walking out the door and waiting to see if DD come after you. In our case, he usually gets more annoyed that I leave without putting up with his attitude and he begrudgingly follows me.. but it's not without a fight EVERYTHING is a fight around here lately.. sleeping, eating, going out, staying in.. the list goes on
So I guess I really don't have any advice .. sorry It's such a tough age...they really are asserting their independence I'm learning
Hang in there

Yeah, we're at the end of the hallway too. I really hate that she screams in the hallway so much now. The neighbors must love us. We're moving into a house within the month so hopefully I can deal with it better there. Who knows? I hear you on EVERYTHING being a challenge lately. I dread so much now: bathtime, going to the store, etc. I really hope this doesn't last too long. DH thinks she'll be behaving better in a few days after she adjusts to being back home from our 1.5 week trip to NY. Somehow I don't think that will be the case.
