So for the microwave, I didn't love the idea at first but I was told it would be difficult for a young kid to open the drawer. I don't know where else we would put a microwave- we don't want it over the stove and don't want it on the counter. We use the microwave alot so we do need it out in the open.
That's a great idea about the deep drawers next to the stove. Then I could make a set of drawers in the island into a cabinet instead.
I have a drawer microwave in my island and my kids leave it alone. They know they aren't allowed to touch it and they don't. I think its a cool feature and not dated at all. If anything I find a microwave over a stove dated looking. You will never find a visible microwave in a high end kitchen remodel. They are eyesores. Just my $.02.

ITA agree with you- we're keeping it in the island. It has a child lock so it will be fine.

Re: Help critique my kitchen layout
Hello, I am an Architect as well and also a vendor on here......i know Leshelle personally.... and agree with a lot of her comments...I am sure your kitchen will be beautiful in the end....
I was wondering who you were using as a kitchen designer and fabricator? My husband owns a cabinet company and has done many similar layouts. You can check out his web site at www.peraginemillwork.com for some great photos and design ideas.
Please FM me if you are still looking for a cabinet maker.
And I am curious to know who you are using if you have chosen someone already....If you don't mind saying...It seems like your kitchen has SUCH potential, the space is beautiful.....Please FM me and we may be able to help you.

That corner cabinet on the end...will be useless. Make it a full square cabinet so that you can utilize it for space. In addition, move the dummy drawer right under the sink to the bottom of the cabinet and make it an acutaul drwere. Perfect for cookies sheets!!!! And i would add Decorative doors to all of the unfinished cabinet ends to make it look more finished.
