Help! I don't know what to do (Potty Training related)

My 2.5 year old refuses to go on the potty. BUT she is starting to refuse to wear diapers also. She is constantly taking them off and it is starting to cost me a small fortune!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

She says she wants to go potty but that is usually after she has already done so. She throws a fit when she tells me she wants her diaper changed and I say no. This last one she has had on for 20 minutes.

I've tried to leave it off to see what happens and she just winds up peeing on my carpet

I am at a loss of what to do. We also use pull-ups sometimes and I take her to the potty all the time but she thinks it is a game.

I've even tried bribing her but nothing is working!!!

HELP!!! Any suggestions???

Ugh, I am sorry! Chat Icon Chat Icon I know how hard it is when you have a 2nd little one to take care of and you are dealing with potty training, totally BTDT! My DS was showing signs of being ready---one of them was constantly telling me when he needed his diaper changed---I cloth diaper so he could tell when he was wet and wanted to be changed right away, I felt like btwn the 2 kids I was constantly changing diapers all day and it drove me crazy. My ped rec I wait to full on potty train until after my youngest was at least 8 weeks, basically bc they were still transitioning to having a baby in the house and he might regress. Maybe you can get some help for a few days with the baby and try putting her in underwear. I think it's great she is telling you when she goes, even if its right after, it took my DS a while before he could verbalize it to me. I am not sure what else to recommend, pull ups may help your current situation, but for me it was very hard to train in a pull up, it's so much like a diaper.

Yeah the pull-up isn't working at all. She knows she can pee and poop in there so it doesn't help except that it is easy to pull down and up every time she says she has to go potty and then doesn't Chat Icon

DS will be 8 weeks in two more weeks . Maybe I will try it then. She wants to wear big girl underwear she just pees in them. I have even put her in her bathing suit with no diaper and told her to let me know when she had to go....the bathing suit lost that battle!

My DD found the video "Potty Power" to be particularly inspiring.

Do you think something like that might work?

We have the potty movie and book... Neither of them seemed to make a difference. I think I just have a very stubborn child!

If she is stubborn, maybe try putting it on her--example "tell me when you have to go pee pee" vs "lets sit on the potty now". When she starts to have an accident run her to the potty. I don't know, I am definitely not an expert, maybe someone else has some better advice Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Help! I don't know what to do (Potty Training related)

a friend of mine sent me an ebook, potty training in 3 days. I glanced through it, and this is what stuck out at me.

PT is all about control. It helps if you say to DC "let me know when you have to go on the potty." Not push the whole sit on the potty every 10 mintues, kwim? Let them have some control over it.

DD is starting to get it and has actually gone on her own.

I will say that's its a very frustrating process, 2 steps forward and 3 steps back.

Good luck

My DS was very, VERY resistant to potty training as well. We tried pretty much every recommendation out there. Finally, he just went on his own for the first time tonight. He just turned 3 a couple of weeks ago. Could it be that she's just not ready? I'm sorry. I know how frustrating it is. I wish I had a recommendation for her taking off her diapers. Chat Icon

I think I might just start duct taping them on so she can't get them off!

I don't know if this will help, but we are PTing right now too. My dd insists on going to bed in her underwear and she is NOT ready for this, but she has agreed to wear a diaper and put the underwear over it. I know it may be kind of weird but it has been working for us. I know it probably goes against everything you read about PTing though.

Re: Help! I don't know what to do (Potty Training related)

DD is the same way. For about a week, completely unprompted, she was telling DH & I she needed to poop on the potty. We would take her, and she would go. We got to the weekend (to do formal training) and she peed in 7 pairs of underwear. She refused to tell us when she had to go, even though she had been doing so for a week.

We have suspended potty training, and will try again next month.
