Help! I've created a Monster!
Having an issue with feeding...not what she eats (she gobbles up anything and everything) but HOW she eats...(ie) I have to feed her everything!
Before she went to the hospital she was a self feeder...when she got home she was cranky, weak and irritable from the meds and refused to feed herself so I did it because she needs to eat with the meds she is on. Well fast forward to now and she will sit there with her mouth open waiting for me to feed her and throws a fit when I try to have her do it.
She will throw the food or play with it....but will not feed herself. What should I do? I have taken her food away when she does this, said a firm No, but after awhile when I give it back she does the same.
I need her to eat due to her meds and really can't let her go without a meal...but I am sick of feeding her everything......if your still reading, any advice?

My advice is to make it a game.
You eat something & say "Yum! Carrots!" then get her to do the same.

I've tried this and she will laugh and clap her hands and wait for me to do it again

Re: Help! I've created a Monster!
If you have a friend with a child around her age or older (preferrably one she already knows, and obviously who can feed themselves), try to get them together for lunch. If she sees this other child feeding themselves, I bet she will try it herself. I know peer pressure is something parents worry about, but take advantage of it when it's a positive influence.
If not, I would say back off for a little while, I'm assuming that the hospital stay was a little traumatic for her so it's common for kids to slide back for a while. Wait a few days, then try again, and praise her if she tries even a little.

We are actually going away in two weeks for a week with some friends who have a son who is a year older then Kerri (exactly, they have the same birthday) so hopefully she will watch him and catch on. Good idea

Question...should I flat out stop feeding her?
you can try...I also found that Jay and I fed Bella because it was easier and faster...then one night when she was about 14 months, she revolted slowly...
Now she absolutely has to eat everything herself and with a fork (sometimes even cheerios) I mean, if I give her a piece of string cheese in her mouth, she will take it out just so she can put it back in!
Don't worry...as long as she is eating...you're good.
You can start with putting dry foods on her highchair and seeing if she eat them. Just keep repeating that she is a big girl and to eat all by herself. Clap everytime SHE does it, not when you do it.
Bella is a sucker for clapping for herself, works almost everytime.

I agree, for the time you can try this, my dd loves when we clap for her so it may work, and telling her she's a big girl might make her want to do it. She is at an age where kids usually WANT to do stuff on their own, I think she will go back to it soon enough.
But again, I'm thinking with the stress of the hospital stay she may just be temporarily backtracking (like if there is a big move a kid who is onto cups may start asking for a bottle again), if that is the case she might just need a little extra comfort and time to get past it.

ITA. I started walking at 10 months...then one day I fell and got pretty upset about it (and hurt). I stopped walking for a couple of months. By accident, my mom had me at her friend's house and her baby (who was younger/smaller than me) was walking...I was having NONE of that and started walking again that day. I'm sure that "on purpose" it works as well.

Well tonight I was determined not to feed her so I helped her guide the food into her mouth and would sing and clap hands after each time she did. But if I wasn't guiding her she woul just sit there crying....should I keep "guiding" her hand or what

Re: Help! I've created a Monster!
Does she eat anything on her own or is it mainly meals that are a problem?
What I am thinking is maybe start with something she *really* wants like a treat, whatever that may be for Kerri. A small dish of ice cream, puffs, a pretzel, something that needs to be dipped, whatever. And leave it for her to eat herself, maybe that'll get her started back on the road to feeding herself. At least she can be finicky with her snacks but you know she is getting her meals for her meds. It must have been so traumatic for her
If giving it a little more time is not an option, I am not opposed to going cold turkey either.

yes! I think she will get it in no time! Baby steps, right? At least she is holding the fork/spoon!

Re: Help! I've created a Monster!
My advice is to give her something new to eat, something irrisistable, and just leave it there. Kind of mean, but maybe give her something you wouldn't normally give her, like a cupcake or something, give her a little taste, then walk away for a minute and see what happens. It might jumpstart her. But I absolutely agree with having her get together with another baby so she can watch them eat by themselves. When Ava and Olivia are together, I SWEAR Ava learns something new everytime. She started holding her bottle when she saw Olivia doing it, and I swear she started to walk after watching Olivia. She would just study her, then start doing whatever it was Olivia was doing. Good luck. You can borrow Ava if need be

That's great! Babies love to mimic. Luca started crawling 2 days after seeing my freinds daughter do it.
