This post offends me in so many ways. Of course it's horrible that the 9/11 responders don't get whatever care they need. They should get it. But....guess what? Republicans aren't responsible for all the problems in this world! Neither are wealthy people. Guess what else? Paying more taxes to a government that throws them away on crap doesn't solve all the problems in the world either! I am SO SICK of it being politically incorrect to be a Republican.

make sure you remember how offended you are right now when you find yourself in need of a first responder. Then spit in their face AFTER they help you. Then you'll be following along the pretty footprints of your cherished republican partyChat Icon

I understand that you are upset by the vote and I do sincerely wish that the volunteers get the medical help they deserve. However, I think that was a really inappropriate and nasty response to the above poster who only expressed her opinion.

People are allowed to disagree without having it turn nasty. I know this is very personal for you but attacking other posters for expressing opinions isn't the way to go IMO.

I totally agree.

We get it. You were at the WTC site. You have health issues. We respect your service.

However, you should be happy that they are even CONSIDERING extending these benefits to 9.11 first responders. As an emergency worker, surely you were briefed that being placed in a potentially dangerous situation was part of the job of being in emergency service... right?

IMO extending these benefits to first reponders is almost a slap in the face to any fireman, police officer, EMT, or anybody that was either critically injured or died on the job (outside of 9.11). People who were first responders get extra benefits. What do emergency service people who got seriously injured on the job (but not on 9.11) get?

People are ALLOWED to diagree with this bill without being "unloaded on".

wow. we get it. you oppose the bill. way to jump on me after I apologized above your post.

and NO, not right, no one informed me showing up as a mental health volunteer with the red cross would get me the ailments it did.

extra benefits? how about any at all? I just want medical coverage for the specific 9/11 related issues i have, but apparently, that's asking too much. you really have some nerve spouting the above assumptions/nonsense.

you completely baffle me.

I am not sure why you're "offended in so many ways" by the OP. Republicans have admitted that they blocked the bill until the tax cut bill is passed and OP is, in my view, properly upset with it. Perhaps you are upset with some of the other comments made here but OP's post taking the GOP to task for their behavior on particular issue is a fair criticism.

thank you. this is what I couldn't understand and why I was offended by her comments

basically, the Republican's are stalling on health care benefits for sick 9/11 workers until they get their Millionaire's Income Tax Bailout.

Disgusting and shameful.

This is where you baffle me, as you have NO IDEA what's at stake in regards to the tax cuts that the DEMOCRATS are stalling on. You do realize this wouldn't even be an issue if the Democrats didn't try to defy everybody, including the president.

You seem to think that this is only going to affect millionaires. Not extending the tax cuts is going to effect practically EVERY american. The economy is already in the toilet. Do you think the average family living paycheck to paycheck can afford to pay thousands more in taxes?

I feel for the 9.11 responders. I really do. I support the 9.11 bill.

But you are really naive to think that on a NATIONAL scale the 9.11 bill right now is more important than the tax cuts that are currently on the table. A New Yorker may think this since 9.11 hits home. The 9.11 bill affect thousands. The tax cuts affect MILLIONS.

If you want to talk politics in your OP, you should get your facts straight before you start slamming somebody.

nothing is more valuable than human life. sorry but not even tax cuts. Id take a tax hit if it meant just one of those 911 responders would get the health benefits they should have.

its one thing to lose all things you have in terms of monetary value... it's another to lose your life. i think the lives of those thousands are worth more than extra money in the pockets of millions.

humanity is losing out on a battle fought in this way.

i think this is literally the saddest thread in the history of LIF. and a very sad time in government. it should be less about republican vs democrat... and more about humanity. at this point i'd rather get rid of both parties altogether...

Re: "HEY 9/11 HEROES. GO EFF YOURSELVES!" Sincerely, the GOP.

I never get involved in political debates nor do I easily get offended by the stuff I read on here but some of the things I have read in this thread are EXTREMELY upsetting...

First and foremost, I am an independent. Every election I vote for who I think is the best candidate, not who is of a certain party. DH on the other hand is a Republican and I see him get attacked very frequently for his beliefs. So while people may be offended (I am not sure I understand why though?) I completely see what the PP means when she says it feels politically incorrect to be a Republican (especially in NY).

I do think first responders should get what they rightfully deserve (as does my husband for what it's worth) and for anyone to even remotely imply that he/we are spitting in the faces of first responders because of a party affiliation is SO beyond ridiculous and offensive. Just because you belong to a party does not mean you 100% agree with EVERYTHING they do. A very close member of my family is a Captain in the NYPD and we have the utmost respect for those who protect and serve us so this whole thing just deeply offended me.

And this is why I hate politics. Turns people against each other and things get real ugly real fast..

Then are you going to take an additional tax cut for a family who has a police officer in Chicago that got shot on the job?

How about an additional tax cut for a family who's son lost a leg in an explosion in Iraq.

Of course human life is more important. That goes without saying. But where do you draw the line as far as federal funds go? Which situations determine additional federal funds and which ones don't? Are you expecting that goverment dip into every American's pocket for additional tax revenue for every single case of somebody getting hurt "on the job".

Here's something to ponder: What about all the human lives that will be lost from people who may/will committ suicide... people who can no longer pay their bills (and support their families) and wants to end their life?

Because you probably live in New York. A Blue State. It's almost "trendy" to bash the GOP here. The local media does it all the time.

Like I said previously, if your husband went down to the south (anywhere in the Bible Belt) and decided to talk politics, he would get a totally opposite view (a more positive one). He would be heralded. Not slammed.

But wait, in my view, one of your points is misleading. House Democrats ALREADY passed a tax cut bill - last week. It will not pass in the Senate because the cuts NO LONGER include the cut for those earning more than 250k. Senate republicans have blocked the legislation and are blocking all other legislation rather than passing the house bill, as it is, WITH middle class tax cuts.

I think there are major differences in these situations. the 911 responders were told for a LONG TIME that the air was SAFE... they were told this OVER AND OVER again... they were LIED to about it. There were workers who aren't even part of the NYPD or FDNY there who were also subjected to the toxins in the air. All these people were there for months on end all the while being told it was safe. they weren't even given masks for a good portion of it all. People who lived in the area or went to school in the area were told it was SAFE to be there and breathe it all in... and it 100% was not! these are people that were wronged in the first place!

Those who were shot and killed on the job... they are covered. My grandfather is an in the line of duty cop.... my grandmother receives his pension and not just his pension but a special in the line of duty pension which increases with inflation. those who are shot and heal usually go back to work, if not they retire early and get their pension. I have a very good friend who was injured as a cop and retired... he is in his 30's and lives a very comfortable life.
The 911 affects people who are still alive and need healthcare to take care of the health problems they suffered due to lies that were told to them. they don't have the money or the coverage for this healthcare which they NEED to LIVE. And if they die (which most are dropping like flies)... does their family get in the line of duty pensions???

as far as suicide goes.... without sounding too harsh here.. because I do have a soft spot for those who have so many issues that the only way they see an out is to commit suicide... they are essentially choosing to kill themselves. The sick 911 responders didn't choose to be lied to and get sick and die over it. to me it's a totally different situation.

ETA: doesn't the government already dip into American's pockets to cover those employees who are hurt on the job? Meaning the NYPD and FDNY type workers?? Also, isn't that who's paying these workers in the first place? US... with OUR tax money?? I mean I get that it's city money vs fed money... but fed also gives money to cities for budgets and what not. and city money is our tax money too....
Am i wrong about this??

ETA: I agree with the way it was passed last week then. The argument that it's not just about the 250k tax break is now moot.... the "good" part of the bill stays intact. I could not agree more with it being passed this way. The way these dirty politicians are acting though.... I just don't see ANY good coming of it...and I'm sure other nations are laughing at our antics.

We have tax brackets set up for a reason. The wealthy pay higher taxes than anyone else already. If tax breaks are to be handed out, they should be handed out to everyone. If we were on a flat tax system as discussed in another thread, then you can say otherwise.

The Democrats knew that eliminating the tax cuts for the upper class wasn't going to fly. So that is their way of saying "we tried".

The Democrats want to tax the rich even further. When does it become unfair? The rich already fund most of the programs we have. Many of the rich also PROVIDE JOBS.

What ever happened to the American dream and working hard to get where you are at? I am not rich.. but I would like to be rich one day and not have to worry about the government taking half of my HARD EARNED income.

Like I said the Dems love to tax the rich. Who else is going to pay for that ridiculous healthcare reform package that they jammed down our throats that at least half of the country (and most New Yorkers) were against.

I don't see much of an issue with bringing it back up to what it was a few short years ago... like 10 years ago or so. Someone posted that link with a chart that you plug numbers in... and it seemed it was roughly about 3% more in 2000. I could be wrong though.

Honestly... I don't even know why I'm entertaining the idea of talking about the tax bill.... I think each bill should be treated separately and one shouldn't be used to influence another. It's not right or fair. I think it's dirty politics.

I was the one that posted the link. For a family making 120k a year, it's more like 5% or $6000 increase.

Again for a family that is living paycheck to paycheck, having to pay an additional $500 a month in taxes is a LOT.

As far as your point about the rich paying more back in the 60s, that can be debated until you are blue in the face. You really will never know when you factor inflation in.

The rich back then paid more in taxes percentage wise. But aren't there "more rich people" now? So there is probably a higher percentage of funds coming from the upper brackets now than there was in the 60s. But who knows I could be wrong on that.

It's far too late to respond to all of these points at any length but I just have to say that the highest tax brackets would increase by 3% if we dont extend the cuts to those high earners, from 36 to 39%. I doubt anyone will end up on the soup line because of it and you'll not be required to turn over "Half your Hard Earned Income."

I am not so sure I agree with your proposition that many of the rich provide jobs and this is why we should not raise their taxes. After all, we have had nearly a decade of these tax cuts you support and we have no jobs to show for it. We are actually in negative territory here despite 10 years of those tax cuts.

I also don't think that the House Democrats behavior was inappropriate. Of course, they knew the bill would not pass in the Senate because Senate Republicans have been quite clear that they would not pass a bill that did not include cuts for the highest brackets. There is nothing wrong with trying to pass legislation that you support even if it does not have enough votes in the other branch. You make it sound like it was some nefarious ploy....

Finally, I don't know who jammed anything down your throat regarding healthcare legislation. As I recall, it was voted on by a majority of our duly elected representatives. If that's jamming than so be it. ANd, for the record, most of the people I know are from NY and every one of them supported the bill. So, I think each of our perspectives may be clouded by who we associate with, to some extent.

IDK if you ever watched this... I'll go out on a limb and guess no....
but... Micheal Moore I think made it, so I can see a lot of people who don't agree with his thinking not watching it... but there's a documentary on Capitalism... and how these same people (the rich) paid far more in takes in the 60's than they do today... overall the tax rates have gone down for them. I don't see much of an issue with bringing it back up to what it was a few short years ago... like 10 years ago or so. Someone posted that link with a chart that you plug numbers in... and it seemed it was roughly about 3% more in 2000. I could be wrong though.

Also, how much of a percentage are we talking about increasing them??

ETA: AND NO NO NO FLAT TAX SYSTEM.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

But those making 120 a year wouldn't be affected ... the tax cut would remain for them. It would dissipate for those making over 250k a year. And I can't within good conscious say that someone making 250k a year is living paycheck to paycheck. Not having seen things I've seen on a personal level.

It's not about the tax cuts across the board.... it's just those for the more wealthy. I think those who make 120k a year should still receive the same benefits.

with your last quote... i thought of that too... but at the same time... making more money and paying less in taxes is still crazy to me. And if there are more rich people now... that's even more money the gov't could benefit from. It's about trickling down the wealth... that's how the economy gets going.... once those at the bottom get some benefits.. they can start spending more and thus stimulating the economy more, in the end it only goes round and round that way.

damn inflation makes it really hard to decipher actual figures... at least for me... I'm not a math teacher. Chat Icon

It was passed by a Democratic majority, that was voted by our representatives. True. Many people in 2008 wanted "change". Well the change that was handed to us was not change that I wanted.

Many of these elected representatives were handed pink slips in the 2010 elections because of this forcefed Obamacare. And many more Democrats will be out in 2012 because of this. I can pretty much guarantee that.

You do realize that the Democrats are losing steam (and seats) FAST because of that healthcare reform. MANY americans were against this bill and the mid-term elections reflected this.

Re: "HEY 9/11 HEROES. GO EFF YOURSELVES!" Sincerely, the GOP.

Also I remember there were polls done by the local news stations here that clearly showed New York City residents were against the healthcare bill that was passed.

Something like 3 out of every 4 residents were against the bill (not reform in general - but the bill the Dems passed).

So many people were against it probably because they had employer sponsored healthcare plans.

what I don't get is the correlation to the 911 bill. It really should not have anything to do with another bill. The right thing to do would have been to pass the 911 bill... and to pass the proposed tax cut bill (the one which the only class excluded was those making over 250k).

We need to start doing the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing. It need not be about democrat vs republican. when it becomes a battle of blue vs red.... we lose sight of what's important. and really EVERYONE loses.

Like I said (and you said), it's dirty politics. That's just the way it is.

The GOP needs to look out for it's own supporters. Just like the Democrats need to look out for their own people. People that are going to get their representatives elected. The easiest way for the GOP to get support is to push for tax cuts.

The GOP is not going to pass a bill that affects mostly democrats (New York is a blue state), when the Democrats are not passing bills that affect red states.

It sucks, but that is the country we live in. Like I said, I think the Democrats will cave and just vote to extend the tax cuts for all americans. They HAVE to do this or else they will literally get hammered in the next election. Once the tax cuts get extended, you will see the 9.11 bill passed.

It's more like "you scratch my back and i'll scratch yours". Someone will cave.

I get that part... and I completely and TOTALLY disagree with it.

I feel politicians are put into a position and a seat where they are to represent the people and do what's best for ALL people, not just supporters. it's all just about votes and money. And this isn't the way this country was founded upon nor was it meant to be.
More problems are caused by the petty back and forth between the 2 parties and issues could actually be resolved if they found some dignity and brought it back to "we represent ALL the people".

More and more i'm just against the idea of having these 2 failing parties represent the government and our country.

Honestly, lawyers get a lot of slack for being soulless... but in actuality politicians are far worse!!!!

Obamacare passed thru because of dirty Chicago style politics. They bribed those against it with sweetheart deals for their states, Ie - extra $$$. Told democrats they wouldn't give them campaign funds for their reelections and arm twisted the get it passed even though over 60% of the country was against this particular bill. I think the Nov elections prove that Americans are unhappy with the way the Dems were running things.

This is not surprising because of how similar it is to how our government treats our Vets. I'm not sure if treatment of Vets has to do with GOP or not, but it's sickening either way.

sad! the government expects so much from men and women in uniforms but then this is how they get treated! unbelievable!
