Re: "HEY 9/11 HEROES. GO EFF YOURSELVES!" Sincerely, the GOP.

I think the 9/11 first-responders should get the proper care... and I am saddened that it's being treated as political leverage.

I also think that a lot of comments in this thread are off-point because the Dems want the tax cuts for people making < $250k so it would cover the "family in Alabama" and the "120k family on LI' and the other joe the plumbers referenced in this thread.

Furthermore, while I believe that 250k in NYC/LI/Cali is nowhere near the same as 250k in Idaho, it's not really 250k. It's 250k taxable income... most with 250k taxable income are probably maxing out 401k, taking other deductions and probably make 300k+. I personally think the cutoff should be 500k to take into account that 250k is more like upper-middle class in many areas v. and not the uber-rich.

Sure it will be nice to have a few extra thou in my pocket for the next two years, but as someone from a household making < 250k TOTAL, not taxable income, I'd still be OK with my taxes going up somewhat if it was funding worthwhile programs and helping out those who NEED IT, like the 9-11 first responders.

Re: "HEY 9/11 HEROES. GO EFF YOURSELVES!" Sincerely, the GOP.

If you know me or have read my posts you know exactly where I stand on this.

I make WAY less than $250K, I have way less to deduct or shelter in any way shape or form than wealthier people do. I would not mind letting the Bush tax cuts expire for everyone.

What I don't understand about the GOP, and specially the Tea party arm is how they can complain so much about the deficit, but be completely unwilling to pay their share, or have the wealthiest among us pay their fair share. We had these tax cuts through 2 wars, something had to give. It's time to pay for it

The wealthiest pay their share. A higher pecentage than anybody else. What's the problem? How much are you expecting them to pay? They already pay more than anybody else.

This makes me so angry, and I am a conservative. Does anyone know why the GOP opposed this? Are there other things attached to the bill that they object to?

I don't know if someone already answered this for you.. but I read today that the republicans vowed to not pass ANY bill until the "millionaire tax cut bill" or the "Zadroga bill" whichever you prefer to call it... is passed; because it's due to expire in 3 weeks.

It's disturbing though because I'm pretty sure this was the last chance for the 911 health care bill to be passed in this manner. They would have to go about it differently now.

I don't think the tax bill should hinder other important bills at all. It's disturbing. And I also think that the HEALTH and LIVES of these people are FAR more valuable than saving tax dollars for people... no matter who whose people are!!

Zadroga IS the 9/11 bill. You're confusing the 2 Chat Icon

From what I understand, and I could be wrong....is that one Dem changed his vote at the last minute so they would be able to bring this to vote one more time.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

eta: the bill was named for James Zadroga, an NYPD fficer who died from respiratory disease directly related to working at ground zero following the attacks

OH OK about the name of the bills. Thank you for that info.

Either way... I did not read that (what you wrote) in the paper... it specifically said that 41 republicans did not vote for it because they vowed to not pass any bills until the tax cut bill is passed. that was in today's AM NY.... which is generally unbiased.

I don't see WHY in the world ONE dem would CHANGE his vote to be able to bring it to vote one more time. I'm sorry, this just doesn't make any sense to me.
The overall votes lost by more than just one vote too... I think they had 57 votes for yes and needed 60. 42 in total voted NO... 41 of them were the republicans who made that vow.

ETA: this isn't from the paper I read... it's the wall st journal I believe... but it states the same exact info I read elsewhere...

Again, what baffles me is how anyone could be OK with the legitimacy/enactment of Zadroga being dependent on the outcome of tax issues.

It's a sad day in this nation where people's health is being used as a bargaining chip

I can't believe that the LIVES and HEALTH of these people who ran in to SAVE others are being put up as ammo to get ANOTHER UNRELATED bill passed. i have been complaining left and right about this everywhere. We can continue to give tax cuts to those who have the most deductions in the world but we can't manage to assist those who heroically went into a damn war zone. You think the muslim terrorist did an injustice/crime against humanity well those bastards who voted against this are in the same boat as them in my eyes.

This. I couldn't agree more. Chat Icon

Why does everyone think the bush tax cuts only apply to the wealthy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_Growth_and_Tax_Relief_Reconciliation_Act_of_2001

The reason why the GOP voted against the 9/11 benefits is because the DEMOCRATS voted against extending the Bush era tax cuts, something OUR DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT was going to support.

The bush tax cuts lower taxes for EVERYONE. Not just the wealthy. Yet the idiot democrats in congress want to tax the s**t out of everybody.

Take a look at the link I provided above and explain to me how those tax cuts ONLY apply to the wealthy. Those tax cuts reduce taxes for EVERY income bracket.

It's a shame the 9/11 heroes are getting screwed. But the Democrats have themselves to blame for this one.

I can't wait till the 2012 elections which will pretty much guarantee the GOP will have both the house and the senate. The Democrats have had their chance since 2008 and they have done absolutely nothing (except forcing healthcare reform down our throats).

TY I am so sick of the bash the wealthy comments on here, facebook and basically everywhere I go. $250K is not overly wealthy. (and no DH and I don't make near that) They do pay their fair share...when is enough, enough? 40% of your income whether you make $2Million or 2000,000 is still 40% of your income. Why should those who have worked their a$$es off to get to the top, have to pay 50, 60, 70% of their income to the government???? Right now my DH is working his tail off 70-80 hours a week (sometimes more) trying to make partner at his firm. Giving up precious time with his family. If they raise the taxes on the so called "rich" what is the point of working so hard.

Hey liberals..(especially the hypocrites like Oprah, who won't spend as much time in her California mansion as she would like because she doesn't want to be considered a resident of California and have to pay more taxes) the treasury dept would sure love to take your donations!

This post offends me in so many ways. Of course it's horrible that the 9/11 responders don't get whatever care they need. They should get it. But....guess what? Republicans aren't responsible for all the problems in this world! Neither are wealthy people. Guess what else? Paying more taxes to a government that throws them away on crap doesn't solve all the problems in the world either! I am SO SICK of it being politically incorrect to be a Republican.

i don't think they are responsible for all the problems in the world. But in THIS PARTICULAR case they are the ones who voted NO. that's the bottom line with THIS BILL. Had it been the democrats who voted no... everyone would have shiz to say about the demo's too.. just like they do about the republican's now. To me... i don't care WHO voted no ... just the sheer fact that 42 people voted no to it bothers me!!!

I don't think it's politically incorrect to be a republican either. I don't think it's politically incorrect to be a democrat.

Honestly... I don't believe much in either party... I believe in voting for things that are right because they are right... not because they are from the same party as you. I think that's the largest issue here... too many people just want to stick to either the red or blue side... just because that's what they are registered as or what they consider themselves to be... I feel like sometimes people lose sight of the fact that we are all the same... we are all humans and we need to bring the focus back to making the entire country better as a whole.

Let me start off by saying that I am neither a Republican or a Democrat.

I am a HUMAN.

Both political parties are to blame for the mess we're in now. Yes, the Obama admin is cleaning up the mess left by the Bush admin. However, part of the subprime mortgage collapse and the war on terror can be linked directly to Clinton and his deregulation of the banking industry and his failure to respond with force to the bombings on the US Embassy and the USS Cole. (I say this as a firm Clinton supporter.)

We need to get rid of both parties and start over - neither side delivers what they promise.

Don't forget the first WTC attack.

Many people want to blame Bush for what happened on 9.11, saying it happened on "his watch". However it was good ole' Bill Clinton that really allowed the terrorists to run amuck and plan that brutal attack. People say Bush was fighting the wrong war in Iraq. Well Clinton had absolutely ZERO response to any of those attacks under his watch.

I totally agree.

We get it. You were at the WTC site. You have health issues. We respect your service.

However, you should be happy that they are even CONSIDERING extending these benefits to 9.11 first responders. As an emergency worker, surely you were briefed that being placed in a potentially dangerous situation was part of the job of being in emergency service... right?

IMO extending these benefits to first reponders is almost a slap in the face to any fireman, police officer, EMT, or anybody that was either critically injured or died on the job (outside of 9.11). People who were first responders get extra benefits. What do emergency service people who got seriously injured on the job (but not on 9.11) get?

People are ALLOWED to diagree with this bill without being "unloaded on".

This country should have listened to George Washington when he warned against the creation of political parties. He knew this would happen, he outlined it in his farewell address.
It is truly sad what has happened to our country.
It is sad that partisan issues can't be put aside to do the right thing.

Let me also add that I actually do believe this 9.11 bill will get passed, because there is no way in hell the Democrats will continue to vote down the tax cuts.

Every Democrat in the house and senate who is up for re-election in 2012 will get SLAUGHTERED if they vote against these tax cuts. If Obama thinks his party got killed in the mid-term elections, he has NO IDEA what will happen to his Democrats if they allow these tax cuts to expire.

Once the tax cuts get extended, you will see the GOP change their NAY votes to YAY for the 9.11 bill.

So I think this will all be a moot point in the end (at least I hope so). It's a political game of chicken IMO.

I am not sure why you're "offended in so many ways" by the OP. Republicans have admitted that they blocked the bill until the tax cut bill is passed and OP is, in my view, properly upset with it. Perhaps you are upset with some of the other comments made here but OP's post taking the GOP to task for their behavior on particular issue is a fair criticism.
