WHEN DID WE BECOME SO RELIENT ON THE GOVERMENT TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS!!!!!!!

Probably when we created the Declaration of Independence, but what do I know?

seriously Chat Icon go relearn history since The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress which announced that the thirteen American colonies then at war with Great Britain were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire.

At least if you are going to call someone out for "not knowing their history", dont look up your info on Wiki and then go C&P it word for word.

But the Alabama family who can't put food on the table is a great example of the kind of people the Dems WANT tax cuts for.

If tax cuts are to be implemented, they need to be implemented ACROSS THE BOARD, as they were during the 2001 act. That means everyone from the poor to the wealthy gets a tax break. That is really the only fair way to do it (and again, I am FAR from being wealthy).

The wealthy already pay a higher percentage of taxes based on our current tax brackets, yet people keep saying "tax the wealthy". If we had a flat tax, then I could understand. But we have tax brackets for a reason. The wealthy are being taxed more! Where do you want the line drawn?

Did you happen to look at the link I posted to see how much more in taxes you will be paying? A household that makes 120k a year will be paying over $6000 more in federal taxes a year if the tax cuts expire.

Would you consider 120k "wealthy" in Long Island? We just had a debate over this last week.

But the Democrats collectively DO NOT wants tax cuts for the under 250 set to expire. They are simply not advocating for that. So your last question, with all due respect, is irrelevant.

As far as the true wealthy people are concerned, there was a great post earlier that describes the loopholes through which many of them avoid paying a good portion of their taxes.

i have been complaining left and right about this everywhere. We can continue to give tax cuts to those who have the most deductions in the world but we can't manage to assist those who heroically went into a damn war zone. You think the muslim terrorist did an injustice/crime against humanity well those bastards who voted against this are in the same boat as them in my eyes.

This. I couldn't agree more. Chat Icon

Why does everyone think the bush tax cuts only apply to the wealthy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_Growth_and_Tax_Relief_Reconciliation_Act_of_2001

The reason why the GOP voted against the 9/11 benefits is because the DEMOCRATS voted against extending the Bush era tax cuts, something OUR DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT was going to support.

The bush tax cuts lower taxes for EVERYONE. Not just the wealthy. Yet the idiot democrats in congress want to tax the s**t out of everybody.

Take a look at the link I provided above and explain to me how those tax cuts ONLY apply to the wealthy. Those tax cuts reduce taxes for EVERY income bracket.

It's a shame the 9/11 heroes are getting screwed. But the Democrats have themselves to blame for this one.

I can't wait till the 2012 elections which will pretty much guarantee the GOP will have both the house and the senate. The Democrats have had their chance since 2008 and they have done absolutely nothing (except forcing healthcare reform down our throats).

TY I am so sick of the bash the wealthy comments on here, facebook and basically everywhere I go. $250K is not overly wealthy. (and no DH and I don't make near that) They do pay their fair share...when is enough, enough? 40% of your income whether you make $2Million or 2000,000 is still 40% of your income. Why should those who have worked their a$$es off to get to the top, have to pay 50, 60, 70% of their income to the government???? Right now my DH is working his tail off 70-80 hours a week (sometimes more) trying to make partner at his firm. Giving up precious time with his family. If they raise the taxes on the so called "rich" what is the point of working so hard.

Hey liberals..(especially the hypocrites like Oprah, who won't spend as much time in her California mansion as she would like because she doesn't want to be considered a resident of California and have to pay more taxes) the treasury dept would sure love to take your donations!

Here is the problem as I see it (and for the record I would love to see 9-11 volunteers taken care of):

and this goes for both democrats and republicans -

we want:

Healthcare for everyone

Benefits for 9-11 volunteers

Unemplyment to be extended

tax cuts for everyone

and the list goes on and on

not too mention that the economy is still slow

Where is all this money going to come from???

I totally agree w/ this.
People want tax cuts AND all their entitlements.. but at the crux of it, it's the difference between the dems and the GOP.

I think some good old fashioned great works is what we need to get this economy going again.. not continued tax breaks to the top earners.. they do not spend it.. they do not create jobs. they do not trickle the wealth down..

Not even going to get into my opinion but I just have to comment on a few things I've seen stated in this thread:
- Not increasing taxes does not equal tax "cut"
- 250k/yr does not equal "millionaire"
- The AMT essentially negates many deductions so it is incorrect to say the wealthy have the most deductions.

ETA: To the OP, I think it stinks that 9/11 responders did not get assistance and think it's amazing that you volunteered. I hate politics for reasons like this.

My husband works 60+ hours to just make 60K and that is if its a good year. (edited part because i forgot to add) so to me 250K is wealthy.

there are plenty of people who earn WAY more then 250K that are the cause of the problem. Your average LI 250K earner is not - its the individuals who run multimillion/billion industries who take tax cuts/deductions and farm out half the workforce overseas. Yes everyone wants their agenda pushed forward and entitlement is over the top but to give simple extended coverage to those who picked up the pieces at a warzone is just common decency. We can pay jocks to swing a freaking bat or chuck a football millions but we don't care about the people who put their lives on the line SOME OF WHICH WERE MADE TO WORK AT THE SITE not volunteer. You want to talk about entitlement?

Thank youChat Icon

I understand there are 2 different issues going on here. Tax issue and Zadroga.

Again, what baffles me is how anyone could be OK with the legitimacy/enactment of Zadroga being dependent on the outcome of tax issues.

It's a sad day in this nation where people's health is being used as a bargaining chip

some Republicans are opposing the bill, claiming it opens the door to fraud and would be a “job killer.” The “job killing taxes” Zadroga bill opponents refer to is the plan to fund the bill’s program by cracking down on companies that “treaty-shop,” which means they funnel income through firms located in other countries that have treaties setting lower US tax rate. To garner Republican support, advocates of the Zadroga bill have offered alternative funding plans, but those have been ignored by opponents.

So far, Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois is the only Republican to support the bill. If opponents do succeed in filibustering Zadroga, it is doubtful it will ever become law.

disclaimer...obviously I c&p this. No one is asking YOU to pay for it

Whoa, I was commenting on the reference to athletes and wasnt looking to debate nor even commenting how Zadroga would/should be funded. As I said earlier, I support it. I put "we" in quotes as "we" was used in the post I quoted as it relates to who pays athletes when "we" dont pay athletes as they're private sector jobs and IMO not a suitable analogy.

I just had a moment to read all of the comments and I just want to say that I hope this bill passes ASAP so people can get the care that they need ASAP. I don't think there are to many people that support the GOP in its position on the issue. In fact, most people I talk to think its despicable, especially in light of the GOP's insistance on first passing tax cuts for those making over +250.
