Re: Elderly Relative Being Taken Advantage of By Doctor..
It is considered elder abuse. I'd look into getting conservatorship if she's not in her right mind. If she is, then unfortunately she can spend her money anyway she wants.
I'd call:
Helplines, Hotlines, and Referral Sources
To report suspected elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation in New York:
1-800-342-3009 – select option #6 (For suspected elder mistreatment in the home). 1-888-201-4563 (For suspected elder mistreatment in nursing home facilities). 1-866-893-6772 (For complaints concerning assisted living facilities). 1-800-628-5972 (For complaints concerning home care).
Individuals wishing to report suspected elder mistreatment may telephone the state helplines listed above, or visit the County Department of Social Services Link to contact specific county offices directly regarding suspected elder mistreatment in the home. For contact information on county Ombudsman programs, visit the New York State Ombudsman Directory online.

Re: Elderly Relative Being Taken Advantage of By Doctor..
As an accountant i don't think it is strange that its cash only and they don't take insurance, i have several doctors as clients that are the same and they are perfectly legitimate. The fact that they can do well and not take insurance means they are very high demand. That being said $2,000 seems like an excessive amount of money per week. Find out his contact info & tell him if he doesn’t start giving receipts you will report him to the IRS

I'm throwing this in too because I'm so angry about it.
Practice Issues
For answers to questions concerning practice issues, contact:
NYS Education Department Office of the Professions State Board for Acupuncture 89 Washington Avenue Albany, NY 12234-1000 Phone: 518-474-3817 ext. 100 Fax: 518-474-3706 E-mail: [email protected]
I would email the governing authority & then follow up with a phone call.
I like this advice too:

Re: Elderly Relative Being Taken Advantage of By Doctor..
How often does she go to accupuncture?
My parents swear by accupuncture and spend several hundred dollars per visit.
$2000 sounds like an awful lot unless she is going multiple times per week. I'm not familiar with accupuncture treatments though.

Re: Elderly Relative Being Taken Advantage of By Doctor..
Thank you so much for your informative post! It is such a shame that the elderly are taken advantage of in this society and many of them don't have family members to help!
Many thanks for your input, nrthshglr!

Yes. Many of the most successful and well respected surgeons do not accept insurance and only accept cash. It's legit. However, he should definitely be giving her receipts so, as the PP said, demand them.

Re: Elderly Relative Being Taken Advantage of By Doctor..
Oh, I completely agree with you.. there is nothing wrong with "cash only" and no insurance accepted. The problem is when she asked for a receipt and he said he doesn't give receipts! And my aunt's aide was asking too many questions for the doctor's comfort, so she is now not allowed in the room! It is very very fishy!

Not sure if you can fill out not being the patient but I would tell your aunt to fill it out about the receipt. You never know what this woman is telling your poor aunt.

Re: Elderly Relative Being Taken Advantage of By Doctor..
She is going maybe 2 to times a week, but he is selling her on his Chinese herbs, which is also included in the $2000.
And I too believe in acupuncture and other holistic practices :)
It is the dishonesty in only accepting cash without receipts that bothers me

"HE"? So the information nrthshgrl printed above on Dorothy isn't the same person? So maybe he isn't licensed.

The top doctors might not take insurance but they DO take checks AND they DO give receipts. While not crazy about the cash aspect the no receipts is the part that I think is shady - because may insurances have OUT of network and she might be able to submit it and be reimbursed so the legitimate one DO give receipts. I have gone to many doctors in the past in the city who don't take insurance but they all insist on writing you a full receipt so you can submit it to insurance.

Re: Elderly Relative Being Taken Advantage of By Doctor..
That sounds like an extremely excessive amount of money. I see acupuncture bills almost daily and the doctors that bill over the fee schedule (this is for no fault and w/c so they have different fees) are billing about $100-$125 per day. A lot of times, they bill what they would bill a regular patient so $2000 for 2 sessions a week is INSANE.

Re: Elderly Relative Being Taken Advantage of By Doctor..
Is there a nurse or a social worker involved through the agency where she is getting home care services? Perhaps contact them and let them know that the aide brought this stuff to your attention and let them do some of the digging around on this situation.
Who is handling her finances overall? Is anyone in the family directly overseeing her care in general?
APS is a good resource. When we are at a loss of what to do with clients at work, that we know are being taken advantage of, we call them.
But the two questions I asked above are very important, because long-term care planning is going to need to be put in place if you want to have any kind of serious involvement with her in general, overall. (i.e. Power of attorney, legal guardianship).
I have someone at work right now who is being exploited by a family member and it's really tough to do anything for them because there is no PofA/guardian and it's going to take some time to do that through APS unless family does the right thing and steps up to fill this kind of role.

And yes, I do believe my aunt is her power of attorney (this is my great-aunt that is the patient).
I did make a complaint Acupuncture Board of NYSED (thanks to Ms.NrthShrGrl!)
My cousin is going to the practice today to speak with the dr.. because now, unbelievably, my aunt announced that she is MARRYING this guy. That spawns a whole new set of problems, being that she has a house that she can lose.. I can safely say that she is coming undone mentally now
