Holiday Collections for Teacher's Gifts
Is this normal?
DC attends prek. It is a community school, so he has 7 teachers.
He got a letter clipped to his notebook yesterday that one of the mothers (there is no class mother) saying she is collecting $90 per kid
It would break down that each teacher would get $10 from each kid, plus a $10 donation to the school and $10 gift that this mother will decide (i.e. gc to a restaurant/nail salon/etc)
This is outrageous, no? I am thinking I wouldn't spend less than $10/teacher, but the idea is kinda a lot to me...
Is this normal?

I think that is definately a bit much!
I collected when DD was in 3 and 4 year old Prek and we did something like $10-15 for each child, with 2 teachers in the class.
We got the teachers TD Bank Visa Gift Cards, and one year we got them Vera Bradley Wallets with TD Bank Visa Gift Cards. They were nice gifts and were very much appreciated.
I don't really think that $90 per child is going to go over well. I know in my district the parents would just chose to do something on their own.
And a lot of parents do get the teachers a little something, like a bath and body works set or some other small gift to go along with the class gift, so that is really asking for a lot!

ummm, that's crazy...
my max towards chipping in to some group gift is $20, anything i want to do more i do myself. i wouldn't feel comfortable giving that much, nor would i feel comfortable asking for that much...

no way! Thats ridiculous!!!! The most I have ever given is $20 and that is for everything for the entire YEAR!!

Big negative!!!
I wouldnt give a random parent my $ anyhow. We have class parents so thats who I intend to give my $ to upon giving a group gift. I will also give a seperate something as a token of appreciation.

Yeah, I just did the math. It would be $520 to EACH teacher, $520 "donation" and $520 split 7 ways as a gift to goWITH the cash.

That is not the norm and I would not participate. Wow! Who has $90 to just put into the kitty at the drop of a hat? If I were you, I would just do my own thing on my own budget.

Not only wouldn't I do it ... but I would bring this to the attention of a higher up. Do it anonymously if you prefer. But I work in a school... and this would never fly. Also, it is illegal for teachers to accept money or gifts of high value. That price is truly outrageous. Please alert someone so they can update their policy.

um N to the O spells a big old NO!!! NO WAY! I have 3 children and have been doing this for 10 years and have never heard of such a large donation. I would tell them we are purchasing something on our own-thank you.

I guess I am in the minority here.....In the scheme of things, 10 per teacher really is nothing.
My dc have 3 teachers and I give them 50.00 each at the holidays and at the end of the year.
I feel they do so much with them, that this little amount is just a token of my appreciation!

While I think it's insane, I have friends that have kids in a private school so I'm pretty sure that would be considered the norm.

Yes. It is a community school. They spend time each day with each teacher in a different manner.
I think the $70 (i.e. the $10 to each teacher) part doesn't bother me so much (as I said in my OP I don't think I'd spend less than that anyway) but her approach and also the extra for the "donation" and "additional gift" put me over the edge.

I would never do this. What is wrong with everyone chipping in a few bucks to get a group gift, like an edible arrangement? Individual gifts for that many teachers becomes really expensive.

This is how I feel. My DS is in a special needs school and I am fine with $10 per teacher, since I know they all work their butts off with the kids.
I donate plenty during the school year for different events, so the donation to the school and the extra $10 would not go in. Since this mom is not the class mom, I would probably just skip the group gift and do my own thing.

That's just it, they are giving CASH + whatever gift she decides to buy with the extra $$

I would pass this up and go on my own. I have a similar situation as far as the amount of teachers including bus drivers. I personally think $5 cash in envelope is very much appreciated by anyone. I'm pretty sure you can purchase breakfast at least with this amount.

I am Class Mom. I have my kids in a private school.
We offer to take a class collection and buy the teacher a gift and/or gift card from the class, for any parent who chooses to take that option. We don't require them nor do we request them to donate a certain amount.
I think being asked to give a certain amount is what the big turn off is. And I agree. In our class, not everyone participates, and those that do, the donations range from $5 to $50+ for the teacher. People give what they can afford or see fit to give.
