JMO, but I think the tipping in general (not just holidays) tends to get a little ridiculous.

I DO agree with that!

Me too.

I tip my mailman $20 and my garbage men $10 or $20 each...depends on how many there are.

Re: Holiday Tipping - Who, What and How?

I defin dont agree with the post about it being a crappy job, those jobs are so important and the benefits they have with them make them great jobs.
They are hard jobs and they are out there in any weather.

I tip the mailman 30, hes nice and helfpful, i dont think i will tip the garbage men, because we have not been living in our house, and have not even put out any garbage in many months. So they never have our house to do.

Last year i tipped them, i had to run out at 6am to give it to them. I gave them money about 30 dollars and a 12 pack of corona beer.

I think that i have heard now its offensive to give the garbage men beer, cause your stereotyping them.
But to say that corona wasnt cheap!

Re: Holiday Tipping - Who, What and How?

I usually give my mailman a box of godiva and 25-30 bucks.

The UPS guy I usually give about $25.

But I intend to give a bit more this year as my mailman has helped me out here or there with a situation.

Garbage men, well I never see them so it hasn't crossed my mind too much and I didn't know if they were the same guys every week.

But I also plan to tip them this year b/c we redid our bath and they took a LOT of stuff so I have to make up for that.

Postal: $25
Sanitation: $25 each (3 guys)

I'm debating on the sanitation guys though....last year they used to even come to the back to grab our garbage from the bins if we forgot. This year they don't do that AND they give us such a hard time about taking everything. My DH can break down boxes all he wants but if they are not in a bag they are left at the curb.

We don't tip anyone. None of them go 'above and beyond' to deserve a tip. It's not my fault they have crappy jobs.

Just my 2 cents!

WOW!!!

Honestly, I agree with Blazesyth in this instance. If (and that's a BIG if) my mail carrier or garbage collector went above and beyond, I might be inclined to tip. However, not a month will go by without me having to call and complain about my mail just being thrown on my front porch, not bound with a rubber band or put inside my door..or for that matter, put INSIDE my mailbox for a change. In addition we pay $70 a month for garbage collection and at least once per week I'm cleaning up the mess from a bag that got ransacked by an animal because the collectors decided they weren't going to take all the garbage.

Re: Holiday Tipping - Who, What and How?

We gave the mailman $40 last year, and will do the same this year. He is very nice. Whenever we have a package or a lot of mail (which has happened a lot since people have been mailing gifts for our DD's birth), he hand carries everything up to our porch and leaves it under the awning so it won't get wet, etc.

ETA: We leave an envelope in the mailbox with cash and a card...labeled "postman". They know to look for it.

We give our sanitation workers $20 each and they take everything we put out all year (including construction stuff). We run out and hand it to them though. Do NOT leave an envelope taped to the garbage. We did that the first year and a nice neighbor from around the block knocked on our door to let us know that people had been taking the envelopes and the guys never got them. Who steals someone else's holiday tips? Chat Icon

In regards to me calling it a 'crappy' job - in my opinion, yes you have a 'crappy' job if you put your hand out and solicit tips from people.

I've gotten notes from the garbagemen and mailman telling me where to send their tip. I don't think it's right. If you need more money than your job provides, then it's a crappy job and you should either get an additional, or differnet job. You agreed to that job at that rate, so why should I have to pick up the difference?

They get paid to pick up my garbage and deliver my mail. They don't do anything more than that to warrant the tip. If I was sending excessive packages, or if the garbagemen were taking stuff away that they aren't supposed to, then I would. But they don't, at least in my case.

I'd rather donate additional money to charity for people who can't work - veterans, handicapped, etc.

Is that a rule that mail is supposed to be bound by a rubber band that it makes you upset that it was not done? I thought when my mailman brought the mail with a rubber band (sometimes) he was just being nice and getting rid of rubber bands he had. And of course garbage will get destroyed by an animal if it is not put in a pail. All that does is give rats/racoons,etc an opportunity to feast on your garbage and hang around your house (not good).

But aside from those things, I can understand your frustration with the mail as mine has done some things I did not care for as well.

They DO NOT send out notes/cards because they're expecting tips. (Not everybody gives money. Some people do like to send baked goods, etc..)

That is a recent (past decade or so) practice because many people do tip their sanitation workers and mail carrier, but do so by leaving envelopes with cash taped to garbage cans or in mailboxes only to have it stolen, so the intended person never saw their "gift".

Besides, it's not the employees sending out those cards, it's the carting company.

Um... Disagree. My parents' mailman puts a note in everyone's mailbox, handwritten (photocopied of course) from HIM personally stating the week that he will be picking up (and I quote) "cards and tips" from his customers. To say they aren't expecting tips is not really fair. I think most of them are.

Re: Holiday Tipping - Who, What and How?

I don't understand the view of the people who have a problem with the garbage men leaving notes on the best method to tip them. It's just a card, you can do with it what you choose. There is a tip line on every bill at a restaurant for the waiter, does that offend you? No, if you didn't like the service you just tip accordingly.

The reality is that it's fairly common practice in NY to tip the mailman and garbage man so it's not presumptuous of them to hand out those cards. If you choose not to tip it's not as if you won't get your mail or they won't pick up your garbage. It's a nice gesture for people, that's all. Personally I was very PO'd to find out that one of my tips for the garbage man WAS stolen and I'd rather have an envelope so that I know my tips are going where I intend for them to go.

It's a common courtesy for mail carriers to receive cards & tips (and other types of gifts: wine, treats, etc.) during the holidays, there's no questioning that. But I don't think they "expect" tips or gifts from everyone. I believe those cards go out so that those who do opt to give something, whether it be just a card or something more than that, will know when he will be working (they don't always work the same days) and so that those gifts/cards (whatever they may be) aren't taken by somebody other then who they were intended for.

I have never received a card/letter from mail carrier telling me when I can leave a card/tip for him. However, I have recieved hand written thank yous from him.

Never said it wasn't done and never said I had an issue with it. I merely said (and do believe) that they ARE asking for tips with those notes. THey may not expect tips from everyone, but they are basically asking for tips with those notes. If they weren't, they wouldn't be sending out those notes.

I never said it was inappropriate to tip the mailman either -- I also never said I wasn't going to tip. I DID say that tipping has gotten out of hand in this culture (and it HAS), but that's another thread entirely and not directly related to mailmen and garbage men per se.

It seems you took my post as a comment directly to you and it wasn't- I didn't quote you. It was just a general comment based upon the thread. I never said that they weren't asking for tips, it's their preogative if they want to do so. I have no issue with whatever they choose to do, and who chooses to give or not give as a response. Frankly it's none of my business anyway. I just stated that I don't know why people get so upset when they do hand out cards. That's all.

No, it's not a rule... but why at least 4-5 times a week, do I have to come home with my mail thrown all over my front porch (and heaven only knows if the wind doesn't blow stuff away). But aside from that, instead of just throwing the mail on the front porch, just walk an extra 2 steps and put the mail where it belongs IN THE MAILBOX? I've spoken very nicely to the mail carrier about this, have left notes on the front door, and have called the post master herself to rectify this.

And yes, I KNOW that if you leave the lid off the pail that's inviting animals to rip through the garbage, that's why we NEVER take the garbage out the night before, and I always lock the lid on tight in the morning before I leave. What I said in my post was that the animals get to the garbage that the collectors DO NOT TAKE. I'm not home when they come, but many times they do not take all the garbage I put out (and at most it's 2 or 3 bags, usually just two since it's just my DH and myself) and they will leave one in the pail with the lid off. Why just take 1 bag and not both bags???? Why should I tip?

I know what you mean about the mail on the porch. My mailman started doing this, to help me out (in his mind) so I could just quickly grab the mail and not walk a foot to my mailbox. I had to ask him to just put it in the mailbox, b/c I worry too much about it blowing away if I didn't grab it in time (he knew I was usually home). Is your mailbox big enough? That I find is the problem sometimes, as my neighbor has a very small mailbox and it is really very ridiculously hard and time consuming for a mailman to try to get it all in or place each item through this tiny little space. So he leaves it in her screendoor. I purposely got a huge mailbox so it would be easy for my mailman to put all mail in my mailbox very quickly (so he hopefully would be more inclined to do so).

And as for your garbage, now i understand. THAT is very weird. I wonder why they would do that? Maybe they are quickly dumping the pail and don't realize that there is a small bag at the bottom? Otherwise, that makes no sense. I see your frustration with that.

Nonetheless, as much as I get frustrated with these things, I personally (not saying you have to feel this way) rather try to kill them with kindness to get what I want, then to disregard their job entirely. I know it may seem like a not so desirable job to some, but that is exactly why I think tips are important. I don't want to do their job and that alone makes me appreciate the job that they DO (with their shortcomings and all).

Thanks!

But why don't people tip their doctors, for afterhours or weekend appointments, or the nurse for calling in their script to the pharmacy? Or the lawyer, for winning their divorce case? Financial Advisor for giving you good stock tips? Those actions are more 'above and beyond' then the mailman and the garbageman doing their job.

Doctors, nurses, laywers are providing services, just like the mailman or garbage man. But people don't - because those people have better jobs and get larger salaries. People don't feel bad for Mr. Doctor and Ms. Lawyer. For some reason people will feel bad for Ms. Mailwoman and Mr. Garbageman, because their jobs don't pay as much.

Sorry, but I don't feel bad for them, and I don't feel that I need to make it up to them. They decided that they wanted to follow that career path, not me.

People often send gifts, generally to the office of lawyers, doctors, dentists, hospitals, etc.. I worked in a nursing facility and we VERY OFTEN recieved gifts from family members. It wasn't cash (we're not allowed to accept cash, just as I'm sure lawyers and doctors can't), but we sure got plenty of goodies!

And not everybody has the opportunity to go to med school, law school, etc..

Tipping isn't about "feeling bad" about someone's job. Chat Icon

I tip the mailman, UPS driver and hairdresser.

I used to tip the garbage men but don't anymore. They have been rude to me and throw the cans whevever...certainly not something I tip for.

Speaking of which, I actually just sent a tower of goodies to my vet's office, because I really appreciate the way they take care of my pets. They always call back quickly when I call with a concern, question etc.

To me tipping is just about showing appreciation, whether or not someone expects it. It is how I feel about them, whether or not they desire to get a tip.
