I dont tip anyone.
Mailperson cannot accept gifts!!!
any all the people that people tip get paid by their employers and in my mind should look tot their employers for a bonus.
I do not look to the people I deal with for gifts or tips....i
ITA 100%. Plus why would i tip a mail carrier, sanitation worker or my ups guy??? They make very good salaries. My friend is a UPS carrier and he makes more money then most people i know plus amazing benifits.
I tip people that depend on them to make a living like waitstaff and hairdressers not people making six figure salaries.
My husband is in sanitation and does not make six figures! They work in every kind of weather taking your garbage they always get tipped and guess what the houses that tip them they take care of! So maybe you should reconsider!
I was talking about my friend the UPS carrier making six figures. I have no idea how much sanitation makes but I know its a good salary and they do not work for tips like waitstaff. You comment about your husband "taking care" of the houses that tip him is exactly why I dont tip. I go above and beyond for people all the time at work and I NEVER do it because someone tips me.
This is what gets me mad about tipping sanitation also. They will purposely break your chops, leave garbage pails in the middle of the street to get run over etc. if "Santa" as they call it does not come. I think it is ridiculous.

Re: Holiday Tips
Just the sanitation workers - and only because throughout the year we leave out a lot of "bulk" items that they're really not suppose to take and they do us a favor and take it anyway for us. It saves us a trip to the dump every few weeks which is a HUGE help, so IMO they deserve it.

Me too. I have a feeling that this is another one of those regional things.
Would love to see the breakdown of that survey based on region.

Re: Holiday Tips
Yea I definitely didn't mean for this to cause drama- I've worked for tips and I know that they're very much appreciated in any walk of life. It wasn't really a forum to discuss why you don't participate, BUT....
Im just curious for those of you who are so adamantly against tipping sanitation workers and whomever else because they're salaried, tip your kids teachers. They're salaried...just curious. I'm sure I'm opening a can of worms but its just bothering me.

Re: Holiday Tips
I have to agree with other poster - we totally went our own ways on this one and didn't, and really couldn't give a "correct' answer - it's all personal preference - however; I took note of the post that suggested that if we non-tippers did indeed tip the sanitation guys we might get better service.....

Teachers give each child individual attention over the course of a year to help them learn and grow. I could not even tell you what my garbage man looks like, I get no individual care or attention..........they pick up a can and empty it. I do not see a need to tip sanitation workers, they are not doing anything special or above and beyond. They have nothing vested in me the way a teacher would my child. Totally different IMO.

Re: Holiday Tips
I hate the threat that if I don't tip, I will be F*cked all year with my garbage pick-up.
times are tough financially.
for us all.
I probably won't get a bonus this year because of the way the economy is. does that mean I should now spite my bosses with poor work? no.
do your job, be happy you have one, and move on. don't throw a hissy fit if an entire neighborhood doesn't tip you because you did your job.
weather, shmeather. that's what you signed on for. news reporters also stand in the middle of blizzards. like erin colton. that girl almost got knocked over in a storm. anyone tip her? no. does garbage pick up stop during blizzards? yes. just saying.
and if I end up getting mistreated because I left cookies instead of a tip, I will put in a phone call every.single.day and raise hell.
something "they" should consider.

Re: Holiday Tips
We tip: dogwalker mailman garbage men
The dogwalker loves our furbaby like we would if we were home, and he charges so little, so that feels right (no bonus from his boss). He also expects nothing.
The other two I do grudgingly even though it makes no sense to me...and I resent the threat of "lost" mail and destroyed garbage cans. I like to imagine what would happen if I did a cr@ppier job of teaching kids who didn't bring me a present for Christmas. And why don't I expect gifts? Oh right, because I make a good salary.
ETA: Just read above and...a teacher's "tip" (gift) usually consists of candy or a $5 gift card to Starbucks. And only a smattering of kids on the secondary level give, which I still find generous and flattering because I don't expect anything. In elementary, the class might pool their money to buy something nicer. For my friend, it was a $25 pen set from Vera Bradley from the class. It's not $20 per garbage man per house.

You actually tip the person who bags your groceries? Who does that??........and why would you? EVERY person who *attempts* to bag my groceries is some moron teenager who is either texting while he bags or yapping with his idiot cashier friends and then I'm stuck with 12 cans piled on my eggs and bread. I would never tip a bagger, they do a $hit job ALL the time.
I tip for the things that require tipping. Waiters, waitresses, delivery men if they are delivering and installing an appliance or something big, etc. I see no need to tip people I NEVER see and who do NOTHING special other than the job they signed up for. And guess what, I've NEVER tipped my garbage men and I get the SAME EXACT service as all my neighbors. They come and take the garbage away like they do for everyone else.

Re: Holiday Tips
Most people aren't getting bonuses this year.... Or last year... If u want a guaranteed bonus, become a CEO. I'm not getting one. I have to make adjustments to ensure my mortgage is paid this month and my kids get a few gifts and I can pay to get our prescriptions. I'm not going to shell out money to people I don't even see or know because they did their job all year just like I did. Much rather a kid who doesn't get any gifts by a nice donation of a few toys with the extra money I have to spare than my garbage men. By the way, my Dh fights for the country as do other service men. He doesn't get a tip. He doesn't expect one. He does what he does and leaves it at that. Can u imagine if cops and firemen and military threatened to do less of their job in spite because they didn't get a few tips ? I mean really. People need to stop feeling so damn entitled. Ridiculous.

Re: Holiday Tips
and what grocery store, besides Trader Joe's, bags groceries anymore? You can't even find a damn cashier anymore. Most just have 1 or 2 lines open and there's a huge section to do it yourself, in an effort to cut costs of having humans work and be paid.
Cut backs are everywhere.
This isn't the 50s where industry and work was flourishing. This is 2011, our 401ks have been hit, raises aren't what they were, bonuses barely exist, student loan debt is at all an all-time high, interest rates are low for the mere pennies we all have in our bank accounts, and the cost of everything is going up without our pay increasing.
The expectation or entitlement of receiving tips should come to a complete halt unless your in a tip-based industry. And if you (universal you) need tips and rely on them so badly, then maybe those people need to make adjustments in their households and be a bit more responsible with their money, or pick up a side job, like the rest of us have to.
file this one under "get over it."

You are kidding right??? I tip people who work for tips and people who have gone above and beyond, not people who only do their jobs well if they get a tip. I think it’s actually really shameful if people only do their jobs well if they receive a tip. I think it shows what kind of people they are.

Re: Holiday Tips
Stop & Shop bags my groceries and they actually do a great job, even if they're chatting with the cashier.
I sent $10 to the Newsday guy, Will give the garbage men $10 each because they DO go above and beyond, and will tip the mailman. Not sure -$10 or $20.
We also got $15 gift cards to Target for each of DD's 3 dance teachers.

Same here. Do people think they remember what tip came from what house? Maybe they reference a list of last year's tips everytime they pull up to a house? "Oh, 123 Main Street didnt tip us last year, I'm not going to pickup their pail today."
I'm also curious about how much garbage people are putting out regularly that people are scared the sanitation workers aren't going to take. We remodeled our whole entire house, they took it all. Without a tip. Because it's their JOB and unless you do something silly like cover your whole front yard in garbage bags or put out a 200 pound box - guess what, they're going to take it. We had a 42 inch CRT TV - must have been 200 pounds. They took it on schedule and my house wasn't egged and they took my garbage next time too.
I think more people would NOT tip if they didn't have this irrational fear that their never going to get garbage pickup again.

This is what is making me reconsider tipping them this year. We always tipped but were away last year and by the time we got back we just didn't think of it. For the first 3 months of the year our garbage can lids would go missing or we would find the cans themselves down the street, one day we left for work and found one can completely shattered in our drive way and there would even be garbage on the lawn. If I don't like my bonus at year end I don't get to act like a child for the first quarter. There are other professions that work in every kind of weather and no one tips them. This just really irked me because we tipped them every other year.
We tipped our maid service the equivalent of one week and the mailman $20. We don't have a newspaper delivered.

Re: Holiday Tips
I don't tip in fear of retaliation, I tip out of courtesy for extra service we receive. Our garbageman will take anything we put out there, can or not, and the mailman hand delivers mail (knocks and waits) if it is large and he doesn't want to bend it.
