Re: Holiday Tips

Tipping is purely personal at this time of year. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I don't tip the sanitation guys/mail people. They are doing their job and are well paid for it. I don't get tips - and like many others, have not gotten a raise in a really long time, but I do have a job and I do it well.
You choose the job/career you work at. No one was sentenced to their job - and why on earth would I fall to extortion with tipping certain people? That's how I feel - if I don't tip, my garbage cans won't be placed neatly at the curb? Or what could be worse? They may hold them hostage? And the mail person - who can't accept tips? Will he/they hold my mail hostage? Keep the bills! To each their own, but this tipping thing gets under my skin and I hate the feelings of entitlement some people have. Getting off my
Giving sanitation workers money because they take bulky items for you and other "extras" is not a tip.. it's a bribe.

does garbage pick up stop during blizzards? yes. just saying.
I just want to say... they stop garbage pick up so they can plow and shovel the snow... also they help the people who are trapped in their cars by hand shoveling them out.
It's just not always possible for the sanitation worker to plow, shovel AND pick up garbage during those times... mostly because they are just one person. The job shifts focus during those times... and they are ordered to do what they do. They then have to go back and pick up ALL the garbage that they didn't get during the snowfall... so it's not like they aren't going to pick up that garbage... it actually ends up being A LOT more work for them. And forget about the baskets on the public streets that are covered in snow.. they are so heavy you have no idea. They work VERY hard in the snow.

My husband is sanitation. He rarely gets any tips. And the job he does is the same regardless. I will say when he does get tips or gifts even (some people will give bottles of wine, etc) it's a nice gesture, that's all it is. Just a way to show appreciation. No one *has* to tip and it's certainly not expected, at least not by him. He's always pleasantly surprised when it happens.
What's funny is... everyone is quick to talk about how the workers won't do this or that without getting tips... yet none of these words are from said workers mouths. I've never heard of a sanitation worker not taking garbage because that house did not tip them that year. They can't do that; especially if they don't want a complaint made on them. I don't see any sense of entitlement coming from the actual workers... it seems to be more of an ideology placed by other people.
Also, as far as well paid... that's all relative. Their salaries aren't good at all for a number of years, at least sani isn't. Most couldn't live off a sani salary until they have been on the job a number of years and had numerous pay increases. It takes some time. But that's how most jobs work.
What keeps running through my mind is doormen.. they are notorious for getting tips and yet they are salaried. I'm curious if everyone feels the same about whether or not they should be receiving tips. I have 2 very good friends who are doormen and they each make upwards of $5,000 in just tips alone from the residents in the building.
