Re: Holiday Tips
We have 3 different mail people, so I'm not sure yet how we're going to tip them.
Until this year we always tipped our garbage men, usually $20 each. They used to stop and talk to my son and it made him so happy, plus they used to take things we were supposed to call special pickup for.
A few months back we got a new crew. They are awful, everyone around us is complaining. They've broken the wheels off one of our garbage cans, broken the lids on all of our cans. I've watched them literally fling the cans back to the curb rather than walk back and set them down like our old crew did.
Earlier this month when they were done garbage cans were lying all in the road and you had to weave all over the road to avoid them. Garbage that didn't get into the truck was blowing all over the place. Several of my neighbors complained and the supervisor came out to see and actually apologized it was so bad.
So they get nothing this year, that $60 will be going to replace garbage cans that they destroyed.

Re: Holiday Tips
We just moved last month, so I will not be tipping this year. I can hardly afford presents for my kids and family.
In general though, I usually tip: Mail: $15 Garbage:$20 (for them to split) UPS (I get a TON of packages for work): $15
I also dont like the fact that I got a "holiday" card from our garbage men that told me where to leave their gift.

You should leave something in their 'designated gift spot' with a notice of EXACTLY WHERE they can find their gift, ifyaknowwhatimean...

Same here. the $40 I used to tip the previous crew now goes to gas money for us to drive our truck to the landfill 2-3x/month for them not picking up my trash on random days.
I'm usually in the driveway/court when the guys come down our dead-end street for pick-up. I'm always pleasant to them, ask them how they are, tell them to have a good day, say thank you for the pick-up, and I even bring my full cans to him as he walks down the court sometimes (which isn't easy at 7mos preg with two small kids), and my return is broken wheels on my trash cans, trash left in the can, but never a "thank you" or even a smile.
To answer the OP, I give our postman (who is a super-nice guy) a plate of cookies because he won't accept cash or a gift card, my PT sitter gets a special gift but no real "tip", and when we had a house cleaner, she got a 25% tip on her regular week's rate.

Sanitation & Mailman Ours happen to all be great...so IMO they deserve it!
Same. All go above and beyond for us so I'm happy to show my appreciation.
We give the mailman $20 and the sanitation men usually $20 each (there are 3). This year we may actually do more for the sanitation men since we've been renovating and they've taken everything each time we load up the curb! We always get a Christmas card from the sanitation workers before Christmas and a thank you card from the mailman.

I don't tip - no one tips me for doing my job. I'm sure the mailman, sanitation, etc will be retiring with a nice pension. Can't say the same for me lol.
This is a great point about the pension. I've been on the fence about tipping mail and sanitation.

I dont tip anyone.
Mailperson cannot accept gifts!!!
any all the people that people tip get paid by their employers and in my mind should look tot their employers for a bonus.
I do not look to the people I deal with for gifts or tips....i
ITA 100%. Plus why would i tip a mail carrier, sanitation worker or my ups guy??? They make very good salaries. My friend is a UPS carrier and he makes more money then most people i know plus amazing benifits.
I tip people that depend on them to make a living like waitstaff and hairdressers not people making six figure salaries.
My husband is in sanitation and does not make six figures! They work in every kind of weather taking your garbage they always get tipped and guess what the houses that tip them they take care of! So maybe you should reconsider!
while I do tip my sanitation guys it's really not right that they would do a better job for someone that gave them a tip. Your DH is salaried, with benefits and so am I. I don't get tipped. My employer may not give me a raise or a bonus and that's just life. If these people go above and beyond consistently and someone feels generous that's their biz. Otherwise we all have our jobs to do. Just my two cents.
eta: and the job requires manual labor outside. If that's not something your DH wants to do then he should reconsider his line of work.

I was talking about my friend the UPS carrier making six figures. I have no idea how much sanitation makes but I know its a good salary and they do not work for tips like waitstaff. You comment about your husband "taking care" of the houses that tip him is exactly why I dont tip. I go above and beyond for people all the time at work and I NEVER do it because someone tips me.
amen sister! that comment is stupid and exactly what is wrong with this world. he is doing a job IS getting paid for it.

Our garbage men are so great, we have always tipped them, the same guys every year.
We tip $150 but thats for 3 guys.
Our cans are always neat and put back on the curb like that.
me and my DH tip everyone this time of year but i know a majority of people don't which is fine, its something that we both like to do.

Re: Holiday Tips
My sanitation guys deserve the least out of everyone. Our cans are always halfway down the block. They pick & choose what they want to take with no reasoning. I HATE them.
That said, I'll be tipping them because DH wants to. Not because I do.
I tipped the following: UPS-$20 (I shop online ALOT) USPS-$25 Dunkin Card Pool Guy-$25 Dunkin Card Cleaning Lady-$100 Newspaper Delivery-$25 Dunkin Card

I don't tip in fear of retaliation, I tip out of courtesy for extra service we receive. Our garbageman will take anything we put out there, can or not, and the mailman hand delivers mail (knocks and waits) if it is large and he doesn't want to bend it.
Same with us. I tip not to give them extra money--to say THANKS for taking that heavy armoir and dresser with a zillion drawers that we left out this summer and picked up the little shards of wood left behind. I top my mail carrier because he knocks and waits during inclement weather to hand us our pile of mail rather than leave it on the stoop if there isn't room in the mailbox.

Re: Holiday Tips
We tip the mailman and sanitation. In my experience if we tip the sanitation workers they tend to take bigger things they wouldn't otherwise. I don't tip Fedex or UPS because I'm usally not home when they come.

Re: Holiday Tips
I tip our newspaper delivery guy - he get's $8 every two months and an additional $10 at Christmas. He's always there in any weather and he'll get out of his car to walk the paper to the box if there has been a snowstorm and the plows have the box blocked in, rather than just tossing it in the driveway where the next plow may bury it.
We haven't tipped sanitation guys but have considered it. I refuse to tape something under a lid and they are never around when we are so it's just not easy to tip them. I resent that they leave our cans in the street, blocking the mailbox, the driveway, etc. and have honestly wondered if it's because we don't tip them. That's pretty lame if their attitude is to do a half-a$$ed job if they don't get tipped for doinging their basic job. It's only the two of us and we don't generate that much trash. There are many weeks where we only put out one bag a week and they get one day with nothing to pick up so we're an easy house.
Same with the mail carrier - no tip or gift. We have a PO Box and only have a little bit coming to the house - a few magazines, junk mail, etc. Plus, he's a truck carrier so he's not lugging a lot of heavy stuff up to the house, just driving up to the curb and putting it in the box. We're an easy house.
Landscaper gets a tip but his rates are so low it's half of what we used to pay and he's a great guy so I'm happy to give him a gift when he finishes the Fall cleanup. We give him the same as we'd pay for a mowing.

Re: Holiday Tips
Tipping is purely personal at this time of year. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I don't tip the sanitation guys/mail people. They are doing their job and are well paid for it. I don't get tips - and like many others, have not gotten a raise in a really long time, but I do have a job and I do it well.
You choose the job/career you work at. No one was sentenced to their job - and why on earth would I fall to extortion with tipping certain people? That's how I feel - if I don't tip, my garbage cans won't be placed neatly at the curb? Or what could be worse? They may hold them hostage? And the mail person - who can't accept tips? Will he/they hold my mail hostage? Keep the bills! To each their own, but this tipping thing gets under my skin and I hate the feelings of entitlement some people have. Getting off my

Re: Holiday Tips
A little different for me b/c I live in an apt building.
We gave our super a very nice tip. He goes above and beyond... inc. keeping an extra eye on my sister and daughter who are home all day.
We use a monthly garage and tipped the manager and a few of the guys that park our car regularly.
