Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
Hi!
Which hospitals allow babies to go to the nursery at night? Manhasset? LIJ? Winthrop? Huntington? Any others? We recently found out we are expecting baby number 3, and I need to find a new OBGYN and new hospital. Our second was delivered in Stony Brook, and we found the rooming in to be very difficult following a difficult birth and csection.
Thank you for any help. Our second was born three years ago, and we are a little bit out of the loop!

Re: Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
I had my baby in April at LIJ (NHP) and they did take the baby overnight but at first they insisted they had to bring him to me during the night. The first night I agreed to this and I ended up so exhausted because he wanted to feed all night long and they kept bringing him back to me & I got zero sleep, that the next night I dropped him off at 11pm at the nursery and told them not to bring him to me until 5am and if he was hungry during the night he could have bottles. I told them I was too exhausted and needed uninterrupted sleep, and after I told them I was afraid I might drop the baby during the night accidentally because I was so tired, They quickly said ok no problem.

Re: Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
I had my son at Winthrop and the nurses took him right away when I asked if they could take him there. I had a really rough delivery, was beyond exhausted and couldn't get up if I wanted to. That being said, I had gotten a roommate a few minutes later who chose to keep her baby in the room (everyone's right to choose). Not blaming her AT ALL but I silently cried because in just needed a little sleep. So if you are doing it for sleep factor, see if you can secure a private room in advance.

I'm about to have my 3rd at Huntington. My doc told me they are encouraging rooming in, but that I shouldn't be afraid to send baby to nursery if I need rest. My friend had a baby there in April and sent him to nursery. I'm hoping I can do the same.

I think at any hospital you're absolutely allowed to send the baby to the nursery if you tell the nurses you feel you're unable to care for the baby yourself (due to exhaustion, medication, pain).

Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
I had my twins at st Charles and my babies were in NICU along with a. Few others on the floor, however, they have a nursery and the woman across the hall sent her baby back each night. She had a rough c section and her husband went home at night for their other kids. She told them she didn't feel safe or awake enough (she was on the narcotics her whole stay) and they took the baby without complaint. I felt bad, the poor woman could barely walk or stand even after days

This. I delivered at Southside and sent her back every night If they didn't like it, tough. Just be firm. If they give you a hard time show them this article: Article and tell them you will be calling your lawyer.

Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
Thank you so much! I agree that this time I will be more forward of the need to put the child in the nursery so I can try to recover. I also think a hospital that is more accepting of babies in the nursery at night will make us all feel more comfortable during such an emotional and physically difficult time post-surgery. We don't want a repeat of our last experience which we both feel was quite dangerous for our son. Many thanks!

Re: Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
Had my son at LIJ (NHP) 2 years ago and both nights they took him the whole night and brought him back in the early am. This was very helpful after a rough delivery. I plan to deliver my 2nd at LIJ as well.

Re: Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
I delivered in Manhasset a few months ago. While I chose to keep my baby (I did have a csection) they encouraged me to send baby in the nursery so I could rest.

Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
When I delivered at Manhasset two years ago, I was really annoyed they didn't tell me I could send the baby to the nursery until my second night. I'd had a tough delivery, and I didn't get into my room until after 1am. I was exhausted and a first time mom, and I had no idea how to care for the baby. One of the nurses came in yelling that the baby was having trouble breathing due to some fluid and scolding me for not doing anything. I couldn't even get out of bed at that point, and I had no clue because I was heavily drugged and in a deep sleep. The second night I sent the baby to the nursery, and it was so much better.
Then for my second I delivered at South Nassau and was all set to ask that the baby go to the nursery. However, South Nassau doesn't have a nursery anymore. The nurse said if I NEEDED them to they'd take the baby, but they weren't set up to take them for the night. Luckily I was in much better shape after my scheduled c-section, and I knew what I was doing, so having the baby room in wasn't too bad. However, there was definitely points in the night where it would have been nice to get some actual sleep.

St Charles will still take the baby to the nursery. My cousin works at night on the mother baby side. She always says she has no problem with that. Last time I delivered there was 2 years ago.

Re: Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
When I had my first 2 at winthrop, there were hardly any babies im the nursery. They encouraged me to keep them at night to try BF them. This was rough since I fractured my tailbone pushing. I couldn't sit up or get out of bed alone.
The 3rd was born at Manhasset. I felt guilty the first night even though I had a really rough labor plus a stomach virus when I was admitted but kept him in my room anyway. The 2nd night, my dh came to spend the night with me & passed the nursery & noticed it was completely full of babies! He wheeled ours in there too. I felt like a million bucks the next day. But it's true no one suggested for me to do that even though it was obvious I was out of it.
I can't believe there are hospitals that don't even have a nursery! I would never even consider them if I knew that while preg.

Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
I think it is outrageous that some hospitals are doing away with nurseries and/or enocuraging or making moms feel bad for not keeping their babies with them. After my first DD was born, I had been awake for almost 2 straight days that ended with a very traumatic delivery I was barely in a condition to care for myself let alone a newborn.

Stonybrook will take the baby to the nursery. You just have to tell them that's what you want. At least that's how it was almost 2 years ago. I had an 81 hour long induction that ended up a c-section. There was no way in hell that I was able to care for my baby alone at night. I couldn't even get up to go to the bathroom by myself for days.

PLEASE know ****you can send your baby to the nursery any time you want. Hospitals might push you to keep him/her, to nurse etc, but they are not the final word. I always told my patients to utilize this time. You will never have 24/ help where you can rest and not worry.

Re: Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
I'm OOS, but this was something I worried about because my hospital had a rooming in policy that wasn't in effect when I delivered my other 2 kids. I ended up delivering late at night this time and couldn't get up until the next morning due to the c-section and medication they gave me. There were absolutely no issues sending DD to the nursery that night. DH went home at night to take care of our other kids and I was able to send her to the nursery for several hours the next night so I could get some rest.

What?!? I delivered at North Shore (Manhasset) 4 years ago and sent me son to the nursery. Your poor SIL. I would be pissed. They would've seen me wheeling the baby down the hall to the nurses station like a zombie.
The best was when I had my twins, I was so sick from the anesthesia, I was throwing up for a full 24 hours. The nurse was trying to hand them to me as I was grabbing to puke and threw up half on her arm and half on my newborn son's arm. She is then trying to talk to me asking me how sick I feel on a scale of 1-10. I was throwing up so much I couldn't even answer. I'm holding my hands up like sign language (think I was trying to say 8), but couldn't concentrate on vomiting and answering her. I can laugh about it now but that first night was terrible for me. Cant even imagine if my twins roomed with me.

Hospitals that allow babies to go to the nursery at night?
I know multiple people that have given birth at Northwell Manhasset in the last few months and they have all been able to send their babies to the nursery at night. My c-section is scheduled in 19 days and I definitely plan on sending the baby to the nursery the first night.
