Hosting Christmas Eve for the 1st time ever!! What is on your menu?
We were thinking (me and my MIL) Lasagna, Pirogies, and either a Ham or Turkey.
Then your usual pigs in a blanket, cheese platter, veggie platter.
Sides: no idea
Dessert: no idea

Re: Hosting Christmas Eve for the 1st time ever!! What is on your menu?
This will be my 2nd year taking over the Christmas Eve Party! My parents always hosted and when they died my sister took over. Last year she decided it was too much.. so it became mine.
It's about 40 people plus kids.
I've already started the planning.. but I'm not done. So far I am thinking we'll stick to mostly small plates and drinks:
Lollipop lambchops
Seared Sea Scallops with purple potato puree
Assortment of Cheeses and Cured Meats with crackers and flatbreads (thinking - Brie, Monterey Jack, Port Wine, Stilton for the cheeses.. maybe Pepperoni, Genoa and Mortadella for the meats
Chorizo Con Queso
Roasted Shrimp Cocktail
Puff'n Puppies
Crab Quiche
Spiral Ham
Mashed Potato Bar
Crudite of Fresh Veggies
Cucumber sandwiches on cocktail rye
Chips and Dips
Beer, Wine and 'Christmas Punch'

I am to, my 1st ever! I'm excited! Dinner: Pomegranate glazed Turkey with apple-almond stuffing Also, a spiral honey ham for the non-turkey lovers
Sides: My garlic skin-on mashed potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce
Dessert: Glazed Pumpkin cheesecake and pecan pie.
Plus, i'm making home-made Bailey's alcoholic beverage so that will be on the table as well.

We plan to host Christmas Eve for the 1st time too this year! Probably 8-10 people and we're Italian so it will be meatless.
We're thinking (so far):
Appetizers: Olives & Cheese Brie & Raspberry crescents Shrimp Cocktail
Entrees: Lasanga/Stuffed Shells Baked Clams Green Bean Casserole Fried Shrimp Crab Cakes Salad - with candied walnuts, blue cheese, craisins etc.
Dessert: Red Velvet Cake Cookies
We still have more to decide on this is just a start...

Re: Hosting Christmas Eve for the 1st time ever!! What is on your menu?
On Christmas Eve I like to make a big pot of Ragu with papadelle pasta -- its a hearty dish that takes about 2 hours to cook down with sausage and meatballs. I'll also make some appetizers and a fish course -- probably breaded shrimp and stuffed clams.

Re: Hosting Christmas Eve for the 1st time ever!! What is on your menu?
We are just doing an open house, seeing as how i will most likely work Christmas Eve. Apps and desserts. Not planning the menu until after Thaknsgiving.
MIL doesn;t understand so the immediate family will probably stay after to do presents. I'll probably make ahead chicken parm, with garlic bread and an easy veggie.
Next year will probably be the big dinner. joy.

Re: Hosting Christmas Eve for the 1st time ever!! What is on your menu?
it is my first christmas eve hosting too i usually am scheduled to work so i can't offer to host, but i am off this year so i'm hosting. we do christmas eve with my family and christmas day with dh's family. we keep it verrryyy laid back and simple on christmas eve.
we do a bunch of appetizers:
-spinach dip in a pumperknickel bread bowl -pigs in a blanket -shrimp cocktail -swedish meatballs -cheese and crackers -veggies & dip -stuffed mushrooms
and then we just get heros and side salads catered. we used to do a big ham dinner, but no one was ever really hungry for it, with all the picking at appetizers and then all the desserts. so we've done this the last few years and it's worked out great.
desserts this year: -my sister is making homemade apple crisp -my brother usually brings some kind of pie from briermere farms -i will probably make trifle with brownies/choc pudding/cool whip -assorted christmas cookies bc we ALL bake

I made a standing rib roast from Fine Cooking last xmas and OMG it was to die for. It was salt and herb crusted then you took that off after baking and served it with a Morel Mushroom sauce.

If you are doing roast beef, you could try Yorkshire Puddings, they go wonderfully with beef and are so easy to make, not to mention impressive!!

Re: Hosting Christmas Eve for the 1st time ever!! What is on your menu?
I am hosting this year too. I grew up eating NO MEAT- we're Italian so we do all fish. MIL just doesn't understand. But I need help with a menu plan. Something simple since I am preggo with twins (AND can not stomach many smells right now) Someone please help!!! Oh by the way my one BIL doesn't really eat fish either he said last night just shrimp, and lobster really. I know I probably should have passed this year BUT my MIL is not Italian and she does not do it the way I grew up and I want to keep that tradition.
