great still doesn't help my husband and I b/c apparently the gov't thinks we don't need the money
If you're making (jointly) over $150,000 you DON'T need the money. You might WANT the money, you might LIKE the money, but you don't need it the way a family making $15,000 does.
Thank you!!!!!!
People honeslty don't realize how much they have. My parents raised 2 kids and put us through college on 1.3 of that...and we wou'd not have sneezed at $600 or $1200. It would have made a lot of difference for us.
ITA!!! SO well said. You do not NEED the money although you may WANT the money.
And if a couple jointly makes over $150,000 and NEEDS the money, something is wrong.
We will put this to good use as well..we don't make a third of the maximum and are struggling a bit but we do not have debt other than student loans as other people have inferred...it will go to my son most likely in some way.

woo hoo i'm gonna take my 'rebate' check and go spend it at the $0.99 store
Might need to take a truck there, thats a lot of 99 cent stuff no?
I know Im taking this too much to heart but thats offensive to me.
FIRST..I do go to the 99 cent store, so what does that imply about me?
Second...For us, the $1500 we would get is a lot of money, not 99 cent store material?

Very true. We are getting $1,800 and are planning to save most of it.

I'm just playing devils advocate, as I'm very happy that my mother and my brother and BIL will be getting the money. But if the point of this is to stimulate the economy, wouldn't the people who need it the least be able to do that, rather than most likely using it to pay down debt or put into savings?

Well what I was saying on another thread was that I'd be using the $$ to pay down debt.. but eventually it does end up back in the economy because that's $600 I would have had to find somewhere else..so in effect I do end up with extra money somewhere..
I think for rich people $600 is a drop in the bucket and wont change spending habits.
but really this thread was about people who make above $150K saying its unfair that the gov't thinks they're rich..
*I* think you're rich

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
I'm sorry but for those of you who are not happy that you are not getting one, assuming you are married and make over $150,000, can you please tell me how you need it compared to a family only making $50,000 a year? Sure you may want it but do you really need it?
Personally I don't agree with the plan. We're borrowing money for other banks to do this. As a country we are in enough debt. We don't need to do this to stimulate the economy. What we need is for people, higher ups and everyday people, to start making smart decisions about how the spend their money and smart decisions about how we run this country. Trust me this is not at all a solution.
But since they are giving it out I will be very happy to get mine.

Well we pay taxes just like you do....so that means we should not be entitled to to want some of the pot being given back?????

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
But they are not giving back on taxes that are being paid. They are borrowing money to give it to people to try to stimulate the economy.
And yes you do deserve money back. When you file your tax returns. If you have overpaid then you should get your money back.
Do you really need it? Is it really going to help you pay a bill like it might a single mother raising two kids on her own making peanuts for a salary. And I mean a bill that helps you live not a bill because of some expensive luxury item that was purchased. Why do you think you deserve it as much as those who are really in need?

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
I want to point out that the plan is not necessarily intended as a way to help middle income families... It's an "economic stimulus plan"...
I guess they feel money will be more likely to stimulate the economy in the hands of low and middle income families. The rich people are already spending money.

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
its to stimulate the economy...they want people tp go out and spend it in the stores, buy new cars, not put it in the bank or pay bills with it....thats what the point of it is....

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
The purpose of this plan is to give the $$ to people who are most likely to spend it so it puts money back into the "struggling" economy. It's not a matter of who needs it more.
Also, $150K is a lot of money but it's all relative to each individual families' situation (a two person family versus a 6 person family). If someone is earning that salary, it doesn't mean they have less expenses than anyone else, especially if they have children, are saving for retirement, heating a home, paying a mortgage and putting gas into anything bigger than a moped. If this plan was based on need, there are plenty of families in that $150K range who would "need" that money.

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
Yeah but if you're putting it towards a bill then you are then able to spend money on something else. Like someone else said the rich are already out there spending money. Maybe this will allow a family to take a small vacation with the money. A family that's living paycheck to paycheck. This might give them the money to pay off a bill now so that have a little bit more expendable income.

Yeah for some it would go to biulls immediately, but it is still extra cash..I still have the $800 of my own money I was going to have to pay the bill with.
If this passes, between this and my tax refind I will be able to pay down my highest rate CC!
Which means I will be CC debt free sooner... at that point I will be putting more $$ into the economy

I have a funny feeling we're not getting a check - what is the breakdown, do you know?
Married, filing jointly without kids- limit 150,000 Married, filing jointly with a kid- limit 174,000
for Long Island..these numbers are ridiculous...if you don't make at least that, you are barely making ends meet especially if you bought a house in the past five years...

If you bought a house you are way ahead of the game...
I see this a lot on this site...owning a house and then not hvaing $$ left over is not a need situation..there are so many people who can't own a house and are STILL struggling.
Plus no one is saying we HAVE to live in one of the msot expensive places in the country. It's our choice.
