Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE

when they did this is 2001, they found that most people DID spend it, and not put it towards debt (like they probably should have).

And I have to disagree with the comments that is you make more than $150K a year you are well off and that we choose to live here. As someone said, this is where my roots are and I shouldnt be forced to move; they should do these rebates regionally.

DH and I make close to $150K, and we are far from rich. buying a house on LI, especially in the past few years, costs a lot of $$$.

and while we earn alot, we both put ourselves through undergrad and graduate school, and we have the student loans to prove it. maybe if we didn't pay $1000 a month to student loans we would be richChat Icon

If you're making (jointly) over $150,000 you DON'T need the money. You might WANT the money, you might LIKE the money, but you don't need it the way a family making $15,000 does.

I'm just playing devils advocate, as I'm very happy that my mother and my brother and BIL will be getting the money. But if the point of this is to stimulate the economy, wouldn't the people who need it the least be able to do that, rather than most likely using it to pay down debt or put into savings?

This is a great point, and actually what alot of top Economists are saying.

That is an unfair assumption. You can't assume based on income what a family needs or wants. True, there is a vast difference between a family making $15,000 to one making $150,000 but there are also things you aren't including.

Once you reach a certain income level, you pay an incredible amount in additional taxes which can eat up up to 50% of a gross salary.

Those that fall into this category who live within their means can start to argue about those who purchased homes way beyond their income means and acculumated a tremendous amount of debt because of living beyond their means because they are what has been a major contributing factor to the economy of today.

Us too. Our total income could increase nearly 4x what it is now and we would STILL qualify.

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE

I purchased my house two years ago, at the peak of the market. My dh and myself are employeed fulltime and we make no where near $150,000. However, we have adjusted our budget for the income that we have. If we made anywhere near $150,000.........not gettting an extra $1,200 would not even cross my mind.

In my opinion, again only my opinion no matter how much you make you have to live with in you means. However, those who make near the $150,000 really have nothing to compain about!

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE

No ONE should want this money.

b/c it's not going to help us.

notice it's to SPEND...so what...companies can take money that's not even ours...that's on borrowed hands and time...so their stocks don't tank?

what really is the point of this? does anyone really believe that if we all take our checks to Walmart or the $0.99 store (and I don't think that comment was made to offend..but more to say what really, are we going to get with this check when all is said and done) that our dollar is going to bounce back, people are going to get jobs, foreclosures will be forestalled...WHAT???

I mean really...WHAT.

keep your money govt. Your $1200 won't put much of a dent in the ridiculous sum I am trying to save to buy a house...or be much to supplement the extra money I am spending to by foods not tainted by every "cide" and antibiotic known to man...

it's not even gonna get me my favorite Ferragamo...or my much wanted trip to Italy.

so keep it. there's got to be something better to be done with it.

Sure you would complain about the fact that you are not getting a $1200 check this Spring.

No matter how much we make, whether we need it or not, or whether somebody else thinks we need it or not, $1200 dollars is a big chunk of change. I reiterate, it means the same to me as it does to you...JMHO

I know that if my income was $150,000 a year, I would not feel comfortable taking an extra $1,200. I think that money should be given to a family that has a lower income and could use the money.

It would be great if EVERYONE got the extra cash, that way no one feels "slighted". However....since this is not the case, I do feel its the right thing that the extra $$ is going to people that prob need it just a little more than others. Is that a fair assumption??

I just can't help but feel that if a family is making over $150,000....that the need for the extra cash is less. I do understand that everyone could always use extra money, BUT it is a reality that a family making less could just use it more.

I'll be honest...from what I have seen...family and friends who make over that amount, while they are not rich...do not wake up with that feeling "how are we going to pay everything today...". They tend to have more savings, more assets etc...again i'm not saying ALL. But for families such as myself, right now we make in the $50's and we have a child. We are doing all we can to make more, to get ahead etc...to not worry every day...we don't have CC debt either. But I can vouch for the fact that receiving that money would benefit us more, right now, as opposed to couples making over the 150.

I know this doesn't apply for EVERY incident and EVERY family. But I do believe the majority.

Hmmm...let me think, which would I like???

$1200 check or a combined income of over $150,000??? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Seriously, if you are making over $150K and are still pining over $1200, you have no idea how good you got it! Chat Icon

Nobody's complaining that they make $150k+ combined.

But this is *supposed* to be an economic stimulus package, a shot in the arm for our economy to help keep recession at bay. This is why one of the first proposals from economists was that people would get a pre-paid gift card type payment rather than a check. The gift card would have had an expiration date and would have to be spent on actual goods from a store.

But the politicians said no because they knew it wouldn't help them in the elections. So they came up with this package, that will put us into greater national debt, most of it will be used to pay for previously accumulated debt and it's not doing a thing to stimulate the economy.

And that's what pizzes me off about it.

People aren't complaing about their salary..you are right...but they ARE making arguments as to why they need the money...and I just don't get it. I know everyones situation is relative...but seriously...if you are making over $150,000 I don't care where you live or what you're expenses are...you should not be whining about it not being fair that others receive the money. Lord how i wished we had that income right now, IF we did I wouldn't give a rats azz about the extra measly dollars and would be happy to see it go to those in my current situation. Which is hardly that of poverty, but lets just say its been a tough year Chat Icon

I would rather give up my $1200 (not getting anyway at this rate) to give it to the poorest and neediest. I know this is not the purpose, but it will boost American confidence that government hasn't abandoned them.

I dont agree that you 100% feel that way.

As a big chunk of change would it mean something meaningful could happen for you that you couldnt do otherwise.

Example...someone with 150K income is going to go plan a trip or something, meanwhile us lower income peeps are gonna use it , in theory , in a more lifealtering way...Im gonna use it for my childs 1st birthday party.

Even be it a TV, I dont see how someone who could NEVER afford a new TV and get one, versus someone who could afford oone and gets one can be the same?

That is amounting to ( generalization here, not exact math) HALF your weekly income...A few days of work, compared to someones possible 3 weeks worth of work pay.

Its not equal, not at all.

I dont neccesairly think over 150K should get nothing, but the same amount..NO

BUT...Even I who qualify would further support a radification of the bill to be more towards the elderly and foodstamps etc they are contemplating.

Even I know that $1200 would be nice for me, and do good things for our family, but there's others that need it more.

It could mean something meaningful to those that make $150,000 too. It's unfair to assume that those in that income bracket are rolling in money and have no struggles. No one knows what liabilities a family might have to even get to that income level...student loans, long and expensive commutes, childcare expenses...etc.

I disagree with this... it can't mean the same thing to you as a family who makes 50,000 a year, its a much larger proportion of their annual salary so of course it is more significant for them... I do agree though that this proposal isn't supposed to be based on who "needs" it more... I do belive that the 150,000 cutoff is a fair cutoff because they had to do it somewhere
