I was gonna say if you make that amount to me, $1200 is not gonna do anything for you anyway since its so little no?

For me that money is a LOT...and will help us out.

um...$1200 dollars means the same to me as it does to you, why would it be too little for me?Chat Icon

Well if someone has money, $1200 won't mean the difference between going on vacation and not, or buying a new TV and not, etc.

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE

I haven't really read up too much on the stimulus package, can anyone tell me what's going to happen next year come tax time for those of us who receive a refund? Am I going to end up owing an extra $1200? Because I fully expect that to happen, which would be annoying for me, but royally screw many lower income families.

I have a funny feeling we're not getting a check - what is the breakdown, do you know?

Married, filing jointly without kids- limit 150,000
Married, filing jointly with a kid- limit 174,000

for Long Island..these numbers are ridiculous...if you don't make at least that, you are barely making ends meet especially if you bought a house in the past five years...Chat Icon

If you bought a house you are way ahead of the game...

I see this a lot on this site...owning a house and then not hvaing $$ left over is not a need situation..there are so many people who can't own a house and are STILL struggling.

Our mortgage is not high though but because we have 2 kids and 2 salaries that are not high, we still have to live within a budget and not have much extras.

Plus no one is saying we HAVE to live in one of the msot expensive places in the country. It's our choice.

Trust me, I know how difficult it can be to pay a mortgage! Chat Icon but at the end of the day you have a house, wheras people without the mortgage burden also don't have the asset.

I'm sorry but for those of you who are not happy that you are not getting one, assuming you are married and make over $150,000, can you please tell me how you need it compared to a family only making $50,000 a year? Sure you may want it but do you really need it?

.

Well we pay taxes just like you do....so that means we should not be entitled to to want some of the pot being given back?????

Not too mention we pay more taxes then you do b/c we make more. Dh and I do not have children yet and because of that Uncle Sam still takes more come tax season b/c filing single zero just doesn't cut it for the big guy.Chat Icon

I think it's a lot for you to assume that you are paying a higher tax rate then me. How do you know that I'm not in the same bracket as you but because I have a kid I'm under the $174,000 limit? For all you know I could be making more than you.

I don't think they passed this bill as a matter of who needs it more. It was probably more that people who make $150,000 a year would be more likely to have an extra $1,200 to spend on a new flatescreen TV a nice dinner and some clothes. For people who live pay check to pay check this will give them the opportunity to have some "fun money."

Right or maybe you'll pay off that credit card that has been hanging around and then once you pay it off you'll have more money each month so you can go out to dinner one or two times more a month.

Yeah, it might not affect me and other people who need it for bills right away, but down the line somewhere it willl benefit.

I am getting a refund because I'm under the $174,000 limit. But I could still be in the same tax bracket as you. The tax brackets do not fall in line with the guideline that they are using to give this "extra money. Here's the bracket info:

Tax rates

And let's keep in mind too that those that are paying the higher rate are only paying it on the money that is in excess of the lower bracket. So if a married couple makes $130,000 a year they are only paying 28% on the difference of the lower tax bracket, or $1,500. I know you might not be referring to me personally but there might be a lot of other people on here that are in the same tax bracket as you but might qualify because they are under the limit that they have to be under.

I disagree. We make a lot more on LI and NYC to support the living that we have. It's our choice to live here. We could move to somewhere else and take a pay cut if we wanted a lower cost of living expense.

But why should I have to leave a place I grew up b/c the housing market rose 40 times that of the average salary? That's not my fault that I want to stay. I stay b/c my life is here. So therefore, I complain a heck of a lot b/c the cost of living is so high. Chat Icon

I understand what you mean but it's just unrealistic to have the government draw up more guidelines because of where everybody lives. We make more on LI then someone does in a lot of other states. So for the purposes of this package they really don't care if we feel that because we live on LI we should get more money. They just want people to get out there and spend the money. Again it's not about needing the money it's about giving it to people who will spend it and people who may not have expendable income to spend normally. I can't stress enough how stupid I think the whole plan is. This is not going to help the economy because I can just see it now where there are people who are in $40,000 credit card debt using this money to go buy that flat screen tv they want. This is just a band aid to the credit and money people in this country.

Can you tell I'm a credit analyst at a bank? I take all of this very serious.Chat Icon

for Long Island..these numbers are ridiculous...if you don't make at least that, you are barely making ends meet especially if you bought a house in the past five years...

I'm not sure this is 100% accurate. Right now DH and I are living on a lot less than that b/c I decided to be a SAHM mom and just went back to work part-time. We still own a home, have 2 cars and pay our other bills and we are doing ok. It depends on the type of lifestyle you want to lead. Am I going out buying coach bags and spending hundreds on clothes like I used to...no...I would rather stay home and raise my son.

I work for the state government and they are currently trying to work out our new contracts that give state workers that work In NYC and Long Island a significant pay differential than our upstate counterparts. The government can do anything they want. It's a reality that I would be living like a queen in East Bumblef*ck on my salary but b/c I live on Long Island and the cost of living is so high, money is tighter. I do believe the the governement should take this into account b/c aren't they in a way responsible for the cost of living here?Chat Icon Not really sure about the economics part of that?

If you work for the Federal gov't they already do this....it is called locality pay. I worked for the FAA for several years. You get increased pay based on the city/area you work in. Obviously working in the NY metro area you make more.

Yes we already get like a $2000 difference in our salaries than our counterparts, but they are looking to raise that amount much more, obviously b/c they recognize the differences in the cost of living.

I think that even if people use it to pay down cc balances they will most likely just recharge the balances that they paid off
