I don't think they passed this bill as a matter of who needs it more. It was probably more that people who make $150,000 a year would be more likely to have an extra $1,200 to spend on a new flatescreen TV a nice dinner and some clothes. For people who live pay check to pay check this will give them the opportunity to have some "fun money."
I agree, but they should have taken location into account when deciding income guidelines.
I disagree. We make a lot more on LI and NYC to support the living that we have. It's our choice to live here. We could move to somewhere else and take a pay cut if we wanted a lower cost of living expense.
I understand what your saying. We paid roughly $85,000 for our house. If we were to live in NYC or LI it would have cost atleast $500,000 if not more. I think that it should be considered, but then again It is a higher cost of living. What I make here as a paramedic is not what I would make in NY. They had to cap it some how and I do think the numbers are good. I'll be honest until I started coming on here Coach, Prada, Fendi, and elaborate vacations to Europe were things only celebrities had. Imagine my suprise when I saw the Fashion and Travel boards I'm not knocking it it's just that "MOST" (not all) people do not have enough to go across the states let alone the country and places like Walmart and Target are where we shop becasue we have to. I know that to my family that money will be used and is needed. I think keeping perspective on where you live is important here. JMHO and I do not mean to offend or irritate anybody

As a couple who will be a homeowner by March and makes a combined income that is significantly lower than the cut-off, we are looking forward to putting the $1200 toward home improvements.

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
I work for the state government and they are currently trying to work out our new contracts that give state workers that work In NYC and Long Island a significant pay differential than our upstate counterparts. The government can do anything they want. It's a reality that I would be living like a queen in East Bumblef*ck on my salary but b/c I live on Long Island and the cost of living is so high, money is tighter. I do believe the the governement should take this into account b/c aren't they in a way responsible for the cost of living here? Not really sure about the economics part of that?
Yeah but then where do we draw the line. Should we change the cut off for those that own homes vs. those that rent? When you own a home you have a higher living expense (usually) then when you rent. So should people that own have a higher cut off?

ITA with you. And I was just going to post something similar to this. We on LI, for the most part, are not the problem with the economy. Have you been to Roosevelt Field Mall on a Saturday afternoon? I don't see a problem with people spending when I go to the malls on LI. This package is really not directed at us. We spend very well here on LI. Look at the cars that we drive, the clothes that we wear, the engagement rings that people have. We spend here. Other parts of this country are filled with lower class incomes where you just don't buy things because your bored on a Saturday afternoon. I'm not saying that everyone here on LI is like that, I know that I am not at all like that. But it is the majority of the people on LI.

But they are not giving back on taxes that are being paid. They are borrowing money to give it to people to try to stimulate the economy.
This is the rub. Taxpayers are glad to get the money back, but fail to realize that they will be paying down the debt for years, which in the end will probably raise income tax.
I might qualify for the rebate, I am not sure what our gross income was for last year. Would I like it? You bet. Would it make a huge difference for me? Probably not. Would I help stimulate the economy? Not by buying anything. As someone else said, I would rather see smarter money management in government (and I work for a government agency this applies to them as well) than see this as a solution. I wouldn't mind my $1,000 rebate (give or take) go to senior programs but I guess I am in the minority here.

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
We qualify for the rebate. And we bought our house on Long Island a little over a year ago. We got a great deal on it - but we still paid a good amount for the house. So it is possible to live on Long Island for less than $150,000 a year. We're not extravagant...but we're comfortable.
And with a new daughter.....I'll be gladly taking my $1,500 check!

for Long Island..these numbers are ridiculous...if you don't make at least that, you are barely making ends meet especially if you bought a house in the past five years...
I'm not sure this is 100% accurate. Right now DH and I are living on a lot less than that b/c I decided to be a SAHM mom and just went back to work part-time. We still own a ownhome, have 2 cars and pay our other bills and we are doing ok. It depends on the type of lifestyle you want to lead. Am I going out buying coach bags and spending hundreds on clothes like I used to...no...I would rather stay home and raise my son.
Just wondering...did you buy your home recently?
I just wanted to add that we will also be getting the rebate - my dh and I don't make $100,000 between us - we have 3 kids and we bought a house last year. We get by just fine.

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
Rather than being fiscally responsible with debt or savings, people will use it stupidly. Don't go out to dinner one or two times more a month. How about eat home & pay your bills on time? What about putting it away toward your retirement?
It's disgusting that this is how they plan on stimulating the economy. How about getting rid of the AMT tax? Or revamping it so the middle class doesn't get socked so hard?
It's not even a short term solution. It's doesn't even rate as a blip to what we as a country need.
Pathetic.

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
its another election year plan that blows. I'm in favor of giving the money to the seniors that earn less than 3,000 a year & probably are struggling to pay their heating bills. I think there are plenty of places in the US where the people really need a boost, but a long term plan to bring jobs back or help them get educated is way smarter than a shopping spree check. Has anyone here ever spent anytime in western NY? Like lets say Medina? It is not only depressed but it is embarrasing that there are people in this state living like that. We need a comprehensive plan to fix our tax system, SS system & figure out how to bring industry back to the US. We have to stop counting on cheap things that come from China & understand the value of "made in the USA"
I'm not in favor of using money our country does not have so people can pay off their Christmas debt or piss it away a boulder creek. Our currency is going to be worth less than toilet paper soon.

are they going by 2006 or 2007 taxes? will our 2007 babies count?

Re: HOUSE PASSES ECONOMY STIMULUS PACKAGE
Does a SAHM who doesn't earn an actual income get this too? Does a married couple automatically get it if they are under 150,000, or do both people have to earn that 150,000? What if a SAHM doesn't have income but earns interest income in their ss#?

I'd like to know this too, I'm thinking it will be 2006 since not everyone filed yet for 07. we alternate years with DSD as our dependent with her mother, so it will depend on which year they use as to who gets the $300 child credit....

No one knows yet. As I understand it, the proposal that the House passed really does not include SAHM/SAHDs, seniors, individuals who earn over $75k/year, couples who earn over $150k per year, etc.
The Senate has a different proposal that would give every American money, but higher income people would get less.
So now the Senate must cobble together a package that will make everyone in both the House and the Senate happy and send it onto Bush to sign.

Nobody's complaining that they make $150k+ combined.
But this is *supposed* to be an economic stimulus package, a shot in the arm for our economy to help keep recession at bay. This is why one of the first proposals from economists was that people would get a pre-paid gift card type payment rather than a check. The gift card would have had an expiration date and would have to be spent on actual goods from a store.
But the politicians said no because they knew it wouldn't help them in the elections. So they came up with this package, that will put us into greater national debt, most of it will be used to pay for previously accumulated debt and it's not doing a thing to stimulate the economy.
And that's what pizzes me off about it.

People aren't complaing about their salary..you are right...but they ARE making arguments as to why they need the money...and I just don't get it. I know everyones situation is relative...but seriously...if you are making over $150,000 I don't care where you live or what you're expenses are...you should not be whining about it not being fair that others receive the money. Lord how i wished we had that income right now, IF we did I wouldn't give a rats azz about the extra measly dollars and would be happy to see it go to those in my current situation. Which is hardly that of poverty, but lets just say its been a tough year
