I think I will be enjoying co-op life a little longer than expected.
I am glad I bought into a great place in a great neighborhood and in the #1 school district in queens... just in case I never get out of here.

Re: How are we supposed to live????
i'm scared to even start looking at houses.
I paid $2.67 for gas today - I only put $20 in....I guess I should've filled it if the prices are headed up again.

Re: How are we supposed to live????
Maybe this is why our president only has an approval rating of 34%? And why isn't the media reporting about that more and not the latest fluff story... aka Runaway Bride.
Keep in mind his family and friends (first named basis with the Saudi royal family) are heavily invested in oil so no wonder why he isn't doing anything... actually, I think he is helping them count the money while he is STILL on vacation
Not to make a bad situation worse but oil is an input cost into so many products we buy... now expect food prices to go up (we do not eat locally grown food, much of it travels 1500 miles to our table), delivery rates, postage, etc.

The people that get screwed the most out of this are the YELLOW cab drivers. The guys that have the meter.
They fought tooth and nail to get their fare increase (right around when the last major hike happened to $2/gallon).
Now they are screwed again cause it will take a while before the city and all the other parties involved approve another fare increase.

I wished more people would have realized this before last fall. Sure Katrina still would have happened but maybe we would have some temporary relief (repeal the gas tax) and we would have been on the fast track to alternative fuels.
Keep in mind it is not in our current administration's interest to explore alternative fuel sources.
And for those who want out of the Middle East... well the less fuel efficient your car is the more "married" you are to Saudi Arabia. So for all of the SUV owners...
Bush is actually passed incentives for small business owners to drive SUV's instead of more fuel efficient autos. That's so his friends, family and his buddies the royal family of Saudi Arabia (a country known to harbor terrorists) can get richer

Yes, I did forget to mention other forms of transportation.
Don't forget the elctric bill will increase as well because LIPA generates most of it's power through the burning of oil.
I do remember my father carpooling in the 70's and early 80's dur to the "gas crisis" of the time. I just remembered this the other day. I mentioned it to someone under 30 and they looked at me as if I was nuts. We might all have to stop compromising our single driving status and explore the idea if we have co-workers who live nearby.
The price of all services will increase because businesses will have to pay more to heat their offices, leave their lights on etc.
Post office will probably announce a rate hike too.
Might lead to an inflationary spiral that we haven't seen since the 1970's.

The media no longer practices the dying art of journalism. They are lazy and don't uncover stories anymore. They just read press releases and never investigate the validity of them. AFter paying off a huge deficit racked up in the 1980's, Bush has created a deficit that our children's children's children will be paying off, finacially and with their own lives if this war continues. You would think that with a president with such a low approval rating the media would be up in arms. Hmmmmm... let's see why not? His former college buddy is the President of Clearchannel communications the largest media conglomerate in the country. So his buddy owns more TV stations, radio, billboards etc... no wonder why the media isn't saying anything negative against a president with such a low approval rating.
We spend way too much time in this nation breeding complacency and stupidity. Recent research shows that the readership of Time, Newsweek and The Economist are all way down while the tabloid press is up. More people are concerned about Brad and Jen and how Jessica Simpson got into her Daisy Dukes than the blatantly false intellegent reports quoted in the Downing Street memos. Carl Rove? Please... in almost any other time in history he would have been accused of treason for crimes against the American people.
Cost of living is skyrocketing for us (and the future we worked so hard to give our children is eroding) and our fellow country men and women are dying and/or are maimed by the THOUSANDS because Bush was upset that Saddham tried to kill his daddy three separate times in the 80's. Just to bring it close to home... do you realize that Brentwood HS now has at least 5 recent alumni dead from this war? So many smaller towns in the south and midwest have been devistated by the loss of dozens of men and women fighting over in Iraq.
He has some nerve being on vacation when our fellow citizens are involved in a backdoor draft for a war that has no exit strategy. He definitely has no plans for our economy because he doesn't care. $3 a gallon is not a rich man's problem... it's his celebration because he has $$$$ in oil.
Now that I'm all worked up I have to go to sleep. Tomorrow is another day.

That is what is so sad. 5 kids from one town. In one war that is only what, 2 years old?
The news sux. Watch BBC news and you'll see what REALLY happening.

That's fine and totally understandable. But there are plenty of families out there who can control their pumping of gas into two, three cars. (I'm not saying I'm not guilty of this as well.) But, I see it all too often on the highways, one person in every single car. It's unnecessary. I've been taking the bus because I can. Something has to be done. We need to conserve where and when we can.

Re: How are we supposed to live????
With 0.61 of every gallon going to taxes I am annoyed about that! That being gone would make a HUGE difference. Honestly I don't know why you don't see more people up in arms about the prices? Also why are Citgo and Hess so much when they don't even import any oil! They could be raking it in even more if they lowered their prices and it would drive the others to do it also because everyone would go them. I just don't get it!

We can start looking into carpooling with fellow employees. My Dad did this during the oil crisis in the 1970's... he had two other guys who lived further east meet at his house in Plainview and then they drove into the NY Tel comp. building in Jamaica. This is especially do-able if you leave work at the same time and don't have to pick up and drop off kids from day-care/school.

well i don't know anyone who is pumping gas unnecessarily....especially with these prices...
And the whole carpool thing and HOV lanes is just a joke..Now a days everyone has different schedules to be able to carpool.
So althouhg you think it is unecessary...it is a fact of life that it difficult to come up with a plausable solution.

Re: How are we supposed to live????
If the carpool went all the way into the city... it would be good.
But the carpool ends at exit 32... and doesn't start up again till right before the tunnel!
That stretch of exits (32-16 in Queens) can be the most crowded part of the LIE!

Re: How are we supposed to live????
I'm not saying it has to be in the carpool lane just the idea. Yes, it wouldn't be do-able for many people but I'm sure that for some people or for certain days of the week it could cut down on the single driver cars.
I lknow I wouldn't be able to do it everyday because two days a week on the way home from school I must go care for my father. I have two co-workers who live in the same town as me (both have babies though that I think they drop off in the morning) and I'm planning on asking them tomorrow if they'd consider it at least for certain days.

Re: How are we supposed to live????
Hopefully this is a wake up call for everyone.
I mean- yeah- it *****- gas is high- but it's BEEN high and everyone STILL goes and buys gas guzzling SUVs... analysts have been saying gas is going to get very expensive for the past 7-10 months.. so I don't know why it is so shocking to everyone.
It's time to maybe conserve- not use gallons of gas in SUVs that aren't necessary without any thought to the environment... we need to stop being so apathetic...
Edited to say- as much as I HATE the President, it isn't his fault- the prices are spiked b/c of Katrina but it's Chinese and Indian demand that are increasing the prices of gas...
