It didn't - it was a completely irrelevant post
There's no need to bash - on either side of the fence! I just really wish people would learn that.

Re: How are we supposed to live????
DH and I are going to start riding in to work together next week when we're both back full-time. It's going to be a hassle but now that our commutes are so long I don't even want to think about how much money gas is going to cost us.
My commute is now 55 miles one way (and we moved here because we could not afford anything closer, so MamanDaddyof2, I feel your pain, many of us do! )

gas at $3.29 oil at $2.89 and a small house on Long Island for $500,00...that is a half million dollars
I am not a millionaire I can not afford this What can we do????
We moved to Florida... Now we live like we were supposed to.. I am a SAHM, my DH works ONE job, and is starting his apprenticeship at college..today! We are finishing a lease for $582 a month for a 2BR apt... Looking for a house 130-160K, and with Florida's first time homebuyers, and homesteader programs, you'd be amazed what they are giving as a Down Payment...
We dont fight about our finances any more, and life is much more realaxing. And no- we are not in some hick area.. we actually are around a sh!tload of NYers..

Just because it isn't his fault doesn't mean he doesn't have the power to DO something.
We have a strategic oil reserve that should have been employed MONTHS ago, but the president refused to release any.
And while Hurricane Katrina certainly isn't the president's fault, he could deploy the National Guard to help the police on the Gulf Coast keep order.
Oh wait, no, he can't do that, because he sent them all to Iraq to look for Weapons of Mass Destruction that don't exist.
ETA: and btw, person who posted above me who moved to Florida, I was going to make the same suggestion! Can't afford New York? There are PLENTY of other places that have reasonable cost of living indices.

Re: How are we supposed to live????
I know what you mean. DH and I make good salaries, but we are worried about ever getting out of debt, owning a home and living a nice life without working ourselves to the grave.
As for the state of things going on with oil and all... first off- our presidents is very good friends with the head of the Saudi government. The Saudis are oen of the greatest producers of oil in the world. Not to mention a whole lot of Texans... Oil prices are skyroc keting. Who benefits? Think about it...
In case that doesn't worry you enough, the Royal Saudi government has given the Bush family soem of the most expensive gifts of any other head of state:
President's gift list There is more than just that, but check it out. It's interesting, and good for a laugh. One Sultan gave the President cheesecake!
Not to mention the president has taken a longer vacation this year, while we are in war and in an oil crisis, then I took in the last 4 years total- including my honeymoon !! And he just cut if short!!!
Its getting to the point where hardworking people are not going to be able to survive much longer- between the lack of health insurance out there, the increased cost of living and real estate skyrocketing- a lot of people are going to be in trouble. Maybe the president didnt' cause the situation, but as President, he needs to fix it. That's his job.
As to moving out of NY, my whole family is here. As an attorney, I don't have too many options where I could live without taking the bar over. And DH woudl have to start from scratch. So maybe we can live somewhere cheaper, but how would we support ourselves at first. It's not so easy.

The oil reserves are for when/if we have to go completely on our own. Depleting them would be placing ourselves at the mercy of the Middle Eastern countries who both have oil and harbor terrorists. Again, NEVER one reason for everything and it's very important that people look at the whole picture.
As for your ETA, if it truly were Bush, the reasonable costs of living indices would have to be out of the country, no? I'm pretty sure that Florida has the same President we do in NY, thus furthering the idea that whoever is in the presidency is not God and there are about a billion factors to consider when it comes to something like this.

THis is old, from 2004, but still relevant...even more so now!!
RECORD OIL INDUSTRY PROFITS SQUEEZE HOUSEHOLD BUDGETS
Domestic companies account for over three quarters of recent price spikes
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, Oct. 29, 2004
Contact: Mark Cooper, (301) 384-2204
(Washington, D.C.) -- U.S. oil companies’ profits for the first nine months of this year have increased by more than 35 percent over last year, with the bulk of those profits coming from charges for domestic oil and gas refining, not from higher crude oil prices, consumer groups say.
Consumer Federation of America and Consumers Union say the record profits, coupled with the Department of Energy’s latest report that heating oil prices have hit a new record --$2.06 per gallon --are a clear indication that oil companies are profiting at the expense of American consumers.
“After analyzing the most recent quarterly statements of the domestic U.S. oil industry, it is not only clear that profits have climbed to record levels, but that the major source of those profit increases is the jump in domestic refining and marketing margins,” said Mark Cooper, director of research for the Consumer Federation of America. “Well over half of that increase in profits has come not from crude oil, but from profits on domestic U.S. refining and marketing.”
“While the media and the Bush Administration blame OPEC,” added Gene Kimmelman, senior policy director for Consumers Union, “a close look at prices and profits shows that a large part of the problem is in domestic markets. As the Government Accountability Office recently concluded, mergers and the resulting concentrated markets have contributed to the problem.”
Cooper said the analysis shows that profit margins on refining and marketing – known as the domestic spread – have set records for gasoline, heating oil and diesel fuel in the past nine months. Since domestic oil companies profit from U.S. production when prices rise, almost three-quarters of the price increases for oil products and 90 percent of the increase in natural gas wellhead prices have gone to domestic, not foreign oil firms.
Cooper pointed out that “last spring and summer it was gasoline, now it is heating oil and diesel fuel that are setting records. Household budgets are being continually pounded by these rising prices.”
• Household expenditures for petroleum products – gasoline and heating fuels (natural gas or heating oil) have increased by 20 percent in the past two years. • Over the past four years, household expenditures on petroleum products have increased by about $1,000 per year. • For all but the wealthiest 20 percent of American families, rising petroleum prices have eaten up the entire Bush Administration tax cut.

i agree!
I agree
It really is a combo of many things.
We really do have to shake our dependency on foreign oil- and while that does mean getting out of bed with the Saudis- it also means that the majority of people on this website need to look at making changes in their own consumption .. and if that means turning in your SUV, well Whether we are in or out of bed with the Saudis, there isn't going to be a cheap way to run those gas guzzlers. I know the first thing I did when I bought my car 5 years ago was to look at mileage, and that was when it was still cheap!
Yes- I think Bush *****- there are more people living under the poverty line this year than last- I really don't things for the "regular folk" are getting much better- but I don't think we can turn to Washington for answers- believe me, it's only going to get worse- the economy will have to slump eventually- there is only so much home equity left to support this economy...

I couldn't agree more...
It's easy to blame Bush, but reality is that everyone is alittle to blame, we live in a country that has become so self-centered and takes for granted all the things we have access too. Is the system perfect, heck no, will it ever be? again heck no! But it's every citizens duty to check the system, correct?
In the last election it was "middle america" that voted in support of Bush and his policies or lack there of, and they are the first to send their boys and girls off to this war, we have no business in I don't understand it?
In a strange way Katrina will bring home to them the reality of the Bush adminstation, he has betrayed us in so many ways, made us look like fools to other countries and yet they still support him?? Unemployment in middle america is at an all time high, yes the cost of living in other states is much lower or more affordable, but what jobs are to be had?
I know my ramblings may not make sense to everyone but are we as american's that easy to con???
