Re: How did you know your house was your FOREVER house?
I didn't want the house we're in because it's too small. DH liked the area, so I agreed. This was almost 15 years ago and before kids. Now we have 4, so you can imagine how I feel about our house now. It's never felt like my forever home, despite the work we've done to it. It's always felt like a "for right now" home. I'd like to move, but there aren't many options in our small school district (that meet our wants/needs), so that leaves us with doing the addition (which will be a total nightmare with 4 young ones), relocating to a new district or leaving the Island...with the latter two being what I look at every day (real estate listings.)
The biggest thing from keeping us from leaving LI is my parents. They won't move and their health is starting to deteriorate, so I want to be close to them.

Re: How did you know your house was your FOREVER house?
I don't know but wish I did! We bought our house with the intention of being able to stay if we wanted to but not being locked into it. But it needed a complete remodel and I wish I knew it was a house we planned to sell in a few years or a house we knew we would live in forever because it would have helped decide our remodel plans. We tried to stay somewhere in the middle with a lean towards staying because we wanted to choose what we wanted. If I knew we were going to leave I could have gone cheaper on cabinets, granite, etc.
I still don't know how long we will be here, if we will move OOS, if we will move somewhere else who knows. But we are here for now and I want to enjoy it while I am here

We bought a 3 bed that felt big at the time. Thought it was our forever home, but I feel differently now. I want something bigger, plus we have a lot of renovations to do in this house, which is big $. If we buy what I want, it's in the 850-950k range to stay in this district.
