Re: How do we feel about this? - Woman sues ex-fiancé

i could see if the guy called off the wedding--and she lost money on things she PAID for -- like deposits on the hall and such.

but to sue just to sue for emotional distress? nope....i don't think so. it was HER choice to move and uproot herself for this man. it really annoys me when people get the courts involved because they made a personal decision that they are bitter about.

i was with an ex for years---i completely uprooted myself---800 miles away from all family and friends, and basically became his "wife" in our apt. we broke up and decided not to get married. guess what? i freaking got over it! i moved on! i cut my losses and said "well at least we didn't get married" and that was that

My rational side says, well, isn't an engagement a form of a contract?

not sure about this Chat Icon

but if it was a contract, BOTH sides have to uphold their "end of the bargain," so to speak. he promises X and she promises X in return - but by hiding her debt (and $30,000 is a LOT of debt), she "lied" about X and therefore reneged on her promise.

not sure if that makes sense but that's how i see it. Chat Icon

I get what you are saying, but her debt WAS disclosed, he already PAID 30K of it and she "says" he knew about all of her debts. So if that IS true, then she held up her end and he SHOULD lose, if we look at this from a business standpoint.
ANother source states that he was unfaithful and she received the settlement due to her financial loss of which she gave up and $81,000 salary and recently took a new job for $31,000.

hmmm... under those circumstances i guess i can see why the jury found in her favor and awarded her damages, but i still don't think i agree with it, for the simple fact that it takes two people to make an engagement/marriage work... and i am willing to bet he wasn't the only bad guy here Chat Icon

Oh, totally! I go on record that I don't agree with this at all, we all get screwed here and there, and we learn from it and move on. But I can see where this would hold water in someone's court.

Im on the fence about this one....

Long story short I was in a bad relationship several years ago. Married the guy even...(stupid yes)...anyway...he asked me to marry him under false pretenses. Had girlfriends the whole time (that was meant to be plural) stole $$$, tried to get my ex to take the kids away from me..really bizarre stuff. I remember thinking at the time that I wished I could sue him. Of course I didnt, but I did think about it...
