How do you cut your dog's claws?
I do the cats with no problems, but I am so afraid to do Bowie's because they are black and I can't see the quick.
But they are way too long, and it has to be done.
Any advice/suggestions?

I use a Dremel tool on my lab's nails..works great.

I take my dog to a groomer and they do it. I personally can't due to the fact they are black.
Another option - when you take the dog to the vet - they can trim them for you.

The longer they get, the longer the quick gets. So they should not be cut back severely. Best option is to cut or grind a little at a time until they are at an acceptable length, and then keep them maintained so they don't get too long again.
One dog's nails are black and we learned how to dremel them without causing problems. Then we found a local place on the drive home from work that will dremel them so it's more convenient.
I don't like the snip type clippers because I think there's more of a chance of nicking the quick, especially if the dog pulls it's paw away.

I bought that informercial gadget Peticure. It was in Bed Bath & Beyond, I used my 20% off coupon of course. Dallas doesn't mind at all & it is a slow file. It's almost impossible to hurt your pup. Works great & was cheap.

I agree...my little guy actually jumps up to DH to have his done, while his sister is just a PITA as soon as she hears it or sees the regular clippers...probably doesn't help that I'm afraid to do hers bc her nails are black too!

I have the PediPaws too and while it is sooo temperamental (I think when the nail filings get inside it the connections fail), when it is working it works great. I file my dog's nails about every week or week and a half. Never had a problem.

I was just going to ask this. I just bought the pedi paws bc my girls need a trim bad! For those that have this - how did you introduce your pups to it?
I can't take one of my girls to the groomer she will flip! I'm thinking a vet appt may be the only way
