Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)

Our minivan came with it in the upgrade. I hardly ever use the DVD's but I will say this - it is a godsend on long trips, and for times when the boys are getting antsy.
I will also put it on when it's close to my younger sons naptime and we are driving home to keep him from falling asleep till we get him in the crib.
You don't have to use it everyday at all. I love that it's there for when I need it though.
Same for us, it has saved our sanity a few times!!

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
wish we had one! We are driving to Pa next week and I am dreading it. 2 of my kids are terrible in the car. TERRIBLE...even at 3 and 4 years old. OMG I am going to want to shoot myself on this trip. I know the DVd player would be the perfect answer for trips like these..if only we had one!

have one and love it. Would never get another car without it. My kids hate being in the car and it keeps me from losing my mind.

I think they are great for long trips, not for eveyday use. Agreed. We just bought a portable one. One of the best investments- EVER!

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
When I was about 14 we had put a portable one in our car driving to Canada. I stepped out of the car and 2 mins later passed out. From staring that the TV for 2 hours watching a movie my equilibrium was set off and I was down for the count!

Nice but not necessary. If I bought a car without one, I think we'd survive.

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
I didn't want one. God knows my 3yr old watches too much TV as it is so I dont want him to think he needs to be entertained with it even in the car. We just got a portable one that only comes out on car rides over 4 hrs. And honestly even then, unless we're in meltdown mode, we try to avoid putting in on but it has come in very handy a few times!

We bought a new vehicle right before DD was born and opted for the DVD package. I figure I won't regret having it, however may regret not.

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
I would get it, and we don't want tv at home. But on long tips, I think safety is important, and its important not to have DS screaming at me while I'm driving.
I hate when he's a zombie in front of the tv, I don't let him watch it because of that. But the car is a different domain and I really need him to zone out for a little until we get to where we are going.

We have portable DVD players. That way, they don't have it for short everyday trips, but we can use it on multi-hour drives. Even adults get bored on really long trips, so I don't see a problem with having something to watch when you're strapped in one spot for 2+ hours.
Same here - we only have one but we'll get one for DD as well before we go on our next trip.

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
i used to think they were dumb - as though our kids need even MORE tv in their lives. But as time went on I began to realize how nice it actually is. If you've got to drive a long distance (which in my case, we do often), what else is a little one going to do in there? Yeah, you can play their favorite music, but it might just save a lot of headaches to pop in their favorite movie. So I'm kinda thinking I'm going to get one for the car when DC is old enough (she's only 2 months now, so we have time).

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
can't stand them...
when we were shopping for our minivan the salespeople always looked at us like we have 5 heads when we said "no" to the "well you obviously want the entertainment package"
the only time i "needed" a dvd player was on a flight from london when i did it solo and pregnant. DD#1 was 22 months and when the portable player's batteries died, all hell broke loose
we regularly take long trips to visit family out of state (6 hour rides) and just throw books at them. DD#1 now also plays her leapster from time to time.
my kids are so plugged in everywhere else, i just wanted to keep it out of the car and it's been totally fine...

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
i always said no, but then when we got out van it came with it.
LOVE it!! we don't use it for everyday errands and trips, but it has been a lifesaver for longer trips. My IL's live in Bklyn, my SIL in jersey and my sister in Maryland. We take lots of road trips. DS is in the 3rd row so it is harder for me to entertain him.
A portable DVD player would do the trick to, but I think it is great idea for long trips. Not saying ou have to leave it on for 4+ hours straight but it breaks up a long car ride.

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
We got one in our new car and we really enjoy it. We do a lot of traveling and last week my DD and I enjoyed watching a movie together while my DH drove home from a trip. It is a really nice feature, and even helps me when I commute with her to work on some days when she is restless and I have to concentrate on driving.

Nope. No TV/DVD on our cars. Both DH and I strongly agree on this one. We only take a couple of long trips per year (maybe 4 at the most that are over 3 hours) and they have always been great in the car. They get enough TV and computer time otherwise.
Same here!

Yep, that's exactly us.
Us too...though we will probably just go for it in our next car, but I know that we will only use it for long trips (3 hours+)...I won't let them use it for regular driving around.

This is exactly us, too.
Nothing bothers me more than when I'm driving behind a van that has the tv on...and they're going food shopping. My feeling is, as a teacher, you're allowing your kids to develop a VERY short attention span for anything that's not constantly stimulating. And then, you're gonna put those kids in MY classroom and act surprised when I tell you they are zoning out in class! May seem like a stretch, but I KNOW there is a correlation.
We got our DVD system when we drove from NC to NY last year. It saved us. But it ONLY goes in the car if we are going 2+ hours away.

I won't say never but for right now we do not intend to put any type of TV screen in the car - including portable players. I don't see the need for it but again...that could change so I don't see the need for it right now.

Re: How do you feel about in-car entertainment systems? (TV in car)
We have a portable pair that we use for sleepovers with cousins and long car rides to visit my folks upstate (4+ hrs).
Our 3yo knows not to even ask it to be turned on unless "we go over a suspension bridge" --- ie the Throgs Neck Bridge or the Tappan Zee.
but we are also a one TV household -- and even that one is rarely on.

Right there with you! We use ours everyday no matter where I go. DS doesn't always ask for it on but when he does, I let him watch it. I honestly don't see the harm in them watching it.

agreed. we have a portable dvd player for DS if we go on long road trips.
also, if you have a system thats built into the car i think its ok. but if you buy one that straps to the headrests then i would think its more of a target for your car to get broken into kwim.
