DH wears a dark suit, not a tux. I wear a long dress.
I don't like black tie optional. To quote a friend "Every guy in a tux is annoyed he's not in a suit. Every guy in a suit feels underdressed. No one is happy except the guy that spent the money to buy a tux."

Re: How do you feel when you get invited to a wedding with "Black tie optional"
If its optional, then it depends If its a Sat night wedding at a fancy place, then DH will wear his tux and i'll probably wear a long dress. We had enough black tie affairs that it was worth it to buy a tux for DH and he likes it when he gets a chance to wear it.
if its less formal, then he'd wear his dark suit and i'd wear a black dress
i rarely under dress for weddings - i see them as a fun excuse to dress up!

Since DH owns a tux he will wear it. I will either get a new gown or wear one that I have. I personally like Black Tie as I know what to wear. When people don't specify I feel out of place and wonder what to wear.

Re: How do you feel when you get invited to a wedding with "Black tie optional"
This is my opinion-- I will wear a dress appropriate for day, time and venue. I dont need someone to tell me it is black tie. If it is a Friday/saturday evening wedding at a nice place I KNOW to wear a fancy dress thankyouverymuch
Oh and unless DH OWNS a tux he ain't renting one bc you decide you are Donald Trump, he is wearing a nice dark suit.

Doesn't matter- we're still wearing what we were going to wear. DH has a darker suit. I'd probably buy a nicer dress if I could, but if not, a cocktail dress from my closet would do just fine. DH would not be renting a tux- not unless he's in the wedding party.

I'm always psyched to get all dooded up for a wedding, black-tie optional or not...but DH wouldn't be renting a tux unless he was in the party. He'd just wear a dark suit.

Same here. My wedding was black tie optional, and there was a mix, which was fine. To me, it says that you can dress up to the nines if you want, but if you don't, that's okay too. I actually like the wording better than "Black Tie Preferred." To me that says "We really want you to wear a tux/gown, but we'll still let you attend if you don't."

Re: How do you feel when you get invited to a wedding with "Black tie optional"
I have never gotten that kind of an invite, so i would check and make sure it was actually addressed to me.
I can't imagine DH ever renting a tux unless he is in the wedding party.
I would wear a long gown.

DH wears a dark suit. I'm lucky he rented a tux for OUR wedding.
I look forward to getting dressed up for any occasion.

Re: How do you feel when you get invited to a wedding with "Black tie optional"
I dont like an invite that says black tie optional. It's either black tie or NOT. That being said, I love going to black tie weddings. Everyone looks amazing and the venue is very formal and nice
If it says optional, I just wear what I would to a normal wedding

It doesn't matter much to me because unless it's an afternoon wedding I usually wear something that would work for black-tie or not.
He wears a tux or a black suit and tie. Which is basically a tux
ETA: I'm really surprised at some of the responses, some people seem almost insulted. I wonder why?
FTR, some people DO need to be told what to wear to a wedding.
My ex's nephew came in a pair of BASKETBALL SNEAKERS, stained black pants, a graphic tee with some random short sleeved button down (that he would have worn to school) over it to our Saturday night wedding. Granted, he was only 12 at the time but sadly, his parent's (my XSIL/XBIL) didn't know better.

This is SOOO us! I love getting dressed up- and I would for any wedding- black tie optional or not. Him on the other hand- like you said- he is lucky he wore a tux to OUR wedding. He considers Jeans to be "dressed up"

Re: How do you feel when you get invited to a wedding with "Black tie optional"
I wear a black gown - floor length. DH wears a black suit with a black tie. If it were just black tie I would have DH rent a tux. I love getting dressed up and I love fancy weddings - so much fun!

Re: How do you feel when you get invited to a wedding with "Black tie optional"
See to me, Black Tie Optional means that they really want you to wear a tux and gown, but wont force you. Otherwise, why say it? Isn't black tie ALWAYS optional? If they want it black tie they should just say "black tie". I dont necessarily mind it being black tie but DH hates tuxedos.
It's also more wondering involved. "Will I be the only one there in a tux? Will I be the only one there NOT in a tux?"

Re: How do you feel when you get invited to a wedding with "Black tie optional"
DH owns his own tux, an investment many years ago (in his early 20's) that has really paid off. If he didn't have one now, I wouldn't invest in one at this point... I might not wear a full length gown, but would be dressed enough to comply.
