how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
I have to go to a birthday party for a friend of my boyfriends...it's in the city, so we'll have to take the train..so that's like $30...we have to bring our own everythiing...liquor/food...and we're being charged $7 per person to be there. so for the two of us to go to this party for 4 hours, it's going to cost us a little over $80 dollars before we even buy a present for the birthday girl, and liquor/beer/snacks.
I guess bringing our own booze and food in might work out to be less expensive then having dinner and drinks...but I either have to carry it in on the train, or buy it in the city (I don't really know the area to know if there's even a liquor store, or anything nearby)...
EVERYONE at the party lives in Suffolk County, the birthday girl, and all the invitees....so, I don't get why we have to go to the city for this, when there are SOOOOO many great places on LI....
I'm venting I know, but am I wrong to feel a little put out????

IMO- by inviting people to a party, then expecting them to pay for admission=tickity tackity. I'd rather stay home.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
if i could afford it i would go, if i couldn't, i wouldn't. to me it's no different than going out on LI and paying an arm and a leg for cover and drinks.
ETA: if the party is at a bar/club in the city, $7 for a cover charge is pretty cheap. i guess it doesn't phase me b/c my friend lives in the city and we do this kind of thing for her birthday every year

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
I think if a person is invited to be a guest at a birthday party, they shouldnt have to fork over money to celebrate. To me thats attention seeking.
I know people who do that and it drives me nuts. They send e-vites to a guest list of over 100 people and, in my mind, its like "Look at me for a few hours, bring me presents but buy your own damn drinks." Not my thing. I dont participate.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
if you were to go to a restaurant and pay for dinner and drinks, don't you think you'd spend more?
perhaps the $7 is a bit overmuch...but I don't really see a huge deal here.
ETA: all of my friends celebrate our birthday's like this.
we pick a venue, get dressed up and go out. we buy drinks for the honoree and dinner. b/c we are CELEBRATING them.
I haven't expected a birthday present or a birthday "party" for that matter since junior high school.
it's a fun night out with friends. and since i'ts your birthday...go shorty you get it for free.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
let me be clear...the guest of honor DOESN'T live in the city-that's one of the reasons I don't get going in...
also, it's not a $7 cover, it's $7 PER PERSON PER HOUR.
and it's not a bar, it's a karoake hall...they give you a private room, and you can sing karoake with your friends. I don't even know if there's going to be glasses and ice there, or if I have to bring that stuff too....it's just really wierd.
and to whomever said it, you're right, we'd spend that much going out to dinner....so I'll try to look at it that way. I just don't think I'd mind it if we were going to dinner and drinks to celebrate....I don't quite know why this is bothering me soo much, the whole thing just isn't my cup of tea.

a karyoke hall is completely different. it's an event.
and I sitll wouldn't mind paying. nor would I expect my friend to pay for her birthday.
hey, be lucky you arent my friend...I want to celebrate my 35th bday in Venice...and I am not paying for anyone but ME.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?
That's a little strange. I think if I were hosting the party, I'd at least provide the food so people didn't have to pay for the transportation, the cover, a gift, AND food/drinks... it may wind up being the same amount of money as you'd spend in a restaurant, but it's perceived differently. If you were going to a restaurant, it's expected to pay for your food and there wouldn't be a cover charge.

ITA with this - this is a totally different situation. i have been to parties at a karaoke hall and it's so much fun!
my way of thinking is that my friends and i don't really exchange presents anymore, so i really don't mind spending that kind of $$ on a birthday party if i can afford it.
plus, like i said before, if i couldn't afford it, i wouldn't go. i've bowed out of events before because of that.
and i might be wrong but i don't really know of any karaoke halls on LI like there are in the city.

Birthday girl + birthday party = birthday girl pays...
You aren't throwing her the party. She's throwing herself the party.. Am I correct?
And the fact that you have to bring your own food/drinks at a hall..it seems too shady for me.
Go to a bar out here or even in the city that has karaoke.
Eat dinner before hand

My problem is not w the cover charge...$7?, pfft whatever....what about all the hassle of having to bring your own booze & food? Now that's ridiculous.
ETA: $7 per hour? Ha...is there some sort of metermaid?
I wouldn't go...it's too much work, especially for a "party"

many karyoke bars that have private rooms are like that.
I've done it before. it's no big. you just order whatever you want. pick it up and carry it to the destination.
you don't have to cook. get a pizza pie and a 6 pack and be done with it!

no, you're right, she's throwing herself the party...funny thing is....her and her fiance own a karoake machine...it's kind of thier thing, they have it out at all thier parties, so I get that she really likes karoake and wants to do something like this...but to be honest, when it says BYOB...does that mean that I need to bring, ice and cups and a corkscrew, etc?

i have to agree with ophelia, mainly because my birthday is next week, my dh sent an evite to invite our friends and family out for drinks.
my dh is not paying for everyone to drink, and i don't think my friends or family expect him to. it is a get together for my birthday, i don't expect gifts or anything like that, we look at it as an opportunity to get together with those closest to us.
if someone didn't want to come because they don't agree with it, or if they didn't want to spend the money, i would understand. but when i am invited to celebrate for someone else, i would happily attend. i love celebrating with friends, and paying my own way or helping pay for the birthday girl/boy is something i enjoy because it's to celebrate how much i care about the person whose invited me out.
we have events like this regularly and i'm so glad, things get so crazy and busy, i'm grateful to get together with the people i love and have a good time.
if it was me, i'd go. maybe she just likes the city!! i don't blame her, i live in nassau and take any opportunity to have dinner or a night out in manhattan, i just like the atmosphere...
jmo!

you DO have to supply your own stuff, so unless you get something more user friendly (like beer) that you buy a chilled bottle of your fav wine (if that's what you need a cork screw for) and take a waiter's corkscrew with you. that should be small enough to fit in your purse.
but honestly, if it's that much of a drag...don't go.
I wouldn't want anyone at my party that was upset about it in any way.

it's not my choice on going, they're my boyfriend's friends, so it's his choice.
thanks for the info on what is supplied...I have a cooler bag I can fit a bag of ice in, and I'll stick in wine and two cups, and a corkscrew my BF drinks scotch, so that's easy enough. I can probably fit some cheese and crackers in there too.
This is happening tomorrow night...so I'll try to get everything together tonight while I'm prepping stuff for EAster...
thanks to everyone for the opinions and info..and for letting me vent, I think I'm just being crabby..

The only time I have even been charged a cover to attend a birthday party is if it is at a bar and open bar is an option. Then the cover does not bother me. If I was bringing my own food and alcohol I would be annoyed to have to pay $7 pp.

Why don't you get yourself one of those portable wine picnic sets...everything you'll need is included and you can re-use it sometime in the future.

I have to agree. Many times for friends' bdays we set up an open bar type thing and everyone pays for themselves. I turned 30 in January and there was no way DH could afford to pay for 50+ people on his own. Everyone paid $25 for open bar for 3 hours.

I have been to parties like this as well (I was going to have one for DH but, ILs ended up footing the bill because they didn't want people to have to pay).
The way I think of it is most of the guests would pay more than $25-$30pp to drink for 3 hrs in the city if they did it somewhere else.
ETA: I wouldn't expect guests to bring a gift if they were paying $$ towards the function.
