ok, I guess it's me then, I'll try to get more into the spirit of the event. Chat Icon

I wouldn't go unless I was really close with the person. Then again I don't know anyone who would do that. What a hassle.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?

When I threw DH's 30th I had it at a bowling alley with our co-workers and friends.
I paid for the bowling, shoes and food and soda and everyone had to pay for their own drinks..
I thought this was the best of both worlds and people were very appreciative. They knew I couldn't afford to pay the bar bill for 40 people!
That being said, I would not have expected people to pay for everything for DH's party such as the food and the bowling, and alcohol!

My problem is not w the cover charge...$7?, pfft whatever....what about all the hassle of having to bring your own booze & food? Now that's ridiculous.

ETA: $7 per hour? Ha...is there some sort of metermaid? Chat Icon

I wouldn't go...it's too much work, especially for a "party"

I agree 100% - this sounds so odd to me!

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?

Maybe I'm in the minority but I think it's kind of cheap to be upset because of the $7/hour thing.

My friend did this for her birthday one year and we had such a BLAST my bridal party did it for my BP.

It's a CHEAP night out in the city (because it's all BYOB) and trust me it's a lot of fun!!

If you don't want to go then just don't - I would rather stay home then sulk over this because you're not into it.

ETS: A big birthday like a 30th is different situation - most people pay for events like this. But for any ordinary birthday, I don't expect my friends to pay for MY dinner when we go out to celebrate them. To me this is like the same situation.

I wouldnt buy a gift. I would consider this a group of people going out to celebrate someones bday and not a party.

I don't understand why you have to bring food/drinks ??? Where is this party?

IMO - If we're all going out for dinner/drinks to celebrate a friend's birthday, i'd expect to pay -

If i'm invited to attend a 'party' at someone's home, or a space they've rented out - I wouldn't mind bringing over some booze .......but FOOD ??? WTH is that about ?

see that's was the whole random thing...

I got an invitation to a party...we didn't all decide to do this together...

and singularly I wouldn't mind any of these things:

1. traveling in the city
2. bringing my own booze
3. bringing food
4. bringing glassware/ice/corkscrew/plates and I guess napkins
5. paying $7 for each hour I'm there...

but you add them all together and I'm totally confusled as to why we had to go into the city to do this, when all of us have pretty big apartments, and they own a karoake machine. I mean, if it was a $30 dollar cover and we had to pay for drinks that would be one thing...or if we went out to dinner and we all kicked in a $100 I wouldn't care...but the whole concept is odd to me.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?

I've had parties for friends in the city where you pay a cover charge but that is usually to a club or bar and then of course you buy your own drinks at the actual place. I've never heard of paying $7pp per hour and then bringing your own drink and food...that is weirdChat Icon Yes it would bother me...that's like being invited to a baby shower in a restaurant or hall and then being asked to pay for your own plate.

I would pay - but I would consider it her bday present and probably wouldn't get anything else outside of a card or something super small.

id skip the party, the $56 your going to pay to be there- before transportationa and food... you could spend instead on buying her a nice lunch- and youd get more one on one time with her....Chat Icon

I guess I am an old fart, but I would rather spend $$ on going out somewhere than having to schlepp all that crap to a rented hall.

If it were my friend, I would probably suck it up and go and end up having a great time, but I'd be complaining about it in advance for a week or two. Chat Icon

That just sounds like an awful lot of work for guests to attend a birthday party. If it's byo - everything, I think the person arranging the party should do some of that work and just collect the cover/hour charge from people.

Um, if you invite someone to your birthday party and it's out YOU pay for it. What is wrong with people! That is so tacky! I would never tell someone that they had to pay to celebrate my birthday, how mortifying! I'm surprised that more people don't have a problem with this. I wouldn't go on principle, unless it was a close friend.

I think if a person is invited to be a guest at a birthday party, they shouldnt have to fork over money to celebrate. To me thats attention seeking.

I know people who do that and it drives me nuts. They send e-vites to a guest list of over 100 people and, in my mind, its like "Look at me for a few hours, bring me presents but buy your own damn drinks." Not my thing. I dont participate.

ITA, I personally would not go. The whole thing sounds ridiculous.

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?

when i threw DH his 30th bday in the city, i invited people to go out for dinner, not to a "party".
it was a price fixed menu, and since it was my idea to have the dinner for him, i paid for half of everyone's meal (which no one knew about). i was very upfront about what the meal was going to cost per person and that alcohol was not included.
but since it was in the city, i felt it wasnt right to make everyone pay full price.

no one knew the exact amount of their dinner and people thought $20 p/p was a great deal for a great dinner out in the city for my DH.

I wouldn't care about the $. my issue would be with lugging all that stuff to the city. Chat Icon sounds like a huge hassle. If I went, I would drive in. more convenient than taking the LIRR

Re: how do you ladies feel about being charged a cover to attend a birthday party?

no, it's NOT tacky.

if you don't like it DON"T DO IT. BOTTOM LINE.

but enough with the tacky already.

do you want a party hat and a goodie bag when you leave too?

come on...it's dinner out. go or don't go.

how about I think it's tacky to make the guest of honor pay for their own meal PLUS mine when I am supposed to be celebrating THEM.

that is ridiculous to me. I would NEVER do that.

even when going to someone's HOME for a HOUSE PARTY...I offer to bring stuff/contribute. b/c it's THEIR bday, and I feel it's right.
